Metse (The Life) | Tibetan Movie | Released 2007
Metse (The Life)" is a 2007 Tibetan film that offers a slice-of-life look at a modern Tibetan family. This low-budget production focuses on everyday experiences rather than political or religious themes typically associated with Tibetan cinema. The story touches on subtle cultural elements, such as the lack of stupas in the city and children playing "Chinese and Tibetans" with toy guns. While the film has been noted for its technical limitations, it provides a unique glimpse into contemporary Tibetan life, portraying universal family dynamics against the backdrop of a changing Tibet. "Metse" stands out for its understated approach, presenting a family drama that could resonate with audiences from various developing regions, offering a rare, intimate portrayal of ordinary Tibetan life in the 21st century.

Interesting documentary. Raises many other thoughts and questions. After 1:20 into this video: Why did the British leave Tibet, knowing that the Chinese would come in? With so many monks and elites in Tibet, who worked the land to provide them all with food and luxuries? Was the elite-class from the same etnicity as the ordinary Tibetans? They look more Mongolian. What was discussed with Mao? Did Mao offer a peacefull transition? Did Mao eventually condone that the young Dalai Lama would “escape” to India? Was there a deal with India before the “escape”? Was DL abstinence from politics part of the deal with Mao? Promised to be only religious leader? Mao considered religion a poison to the minds of the people, but did Mao see the benefits to keep the Tibetans peaceful? Who set fire to the treasury? Etc. etc.

What happens if there were no tulkus. Would the faith be spared. Would it devolve into sects and crazy ideas or simply die out or become more corrupt. I do not have the answer but until someone does it is unwise to get rid of a tradition. Just like you do not demolish something built by someone else without knowing its purpose I can't help but think a lot of the issues in the monasteries would be solved by forming families and having kids instead of celibacy and a greater respect for the human condition. If everyone became a monk who would grow food and have babies!

I do wish their wish may come true, in the meantime let them prosper in India and abroad. May they never leave their peaceful attitude.

China has no business in Tibet. All their presence has accomplished is more land for China. Mao, the first Comunfucist leader did not want a Soviet style state, he wanted to restore the China of the Chin dynasty. They conquered Tibet because Tibet’s armies kept attacking their borders. They held it until the Mongols came along, learned Buddhism from them and kicked the Chinese out. Communist China is very much more Confucian than communist. The average Tibetan still lives in poverty but no longer has the religious teaching that made it immaterial.
