5 days after Wayne Messmer was shot in the throat, the Blackhawks played their last regular season game at the Old Barn. Very emotional night.

    The U. C. now is a modern day entertainment center. Not bashing the building in any way, but we all know the Old Stadium as we remember it and knew it was a rugged diamond within itself and meant so much to so many. There is no comparison between the two, the stadium was the energy the heartbeat the soul of Blackhawk hockey. The anthem, the sound in the building was thunderous that was created by the fans and yet the building knew the energy it was receiving and gave it right back to us. Frank Pelico pounding the keys on the organ, and the thunderous roar after a Blackhawk win that left my ears ringing after games. The memories of that building will never be forgotten, walking up to the 2nd balcony via stairs that stuck to the bottom of your shoes. The bathrooms without mirrors and door stalls, and of course the Andy Frain ushers and off duty police officers that broke up many of fights. The all star game during the gulf war that I attended was nothing less then a memory like no other, that anthem brought more than a tear to my eye, it was when we all felt we were all part of a great nation. The Stadium will never ever be replaced, doesn't matter how many billions they spend on luxury, the Stadium was more than a building it was and is cherished icon.

    When I first started to go to the Chicago Stadium the great Al Melgaard was at the organ and later of course Frank... Nothing like the sound and it brings back so much memories... I'm so nostalgic about this... Emotional, I can't explain it!

    Before every stadium arena became the same Blueprint for every stadium. no soul , no loud intimidating atmosphere with horrible acoustics. No standing room only admission tickets for $10.00 . The stadium was awesome just like my hometown buffalo memorial auditorium Had its own unique feel

    I was at this game and Many others at CHICAGO Stadium including game #4 of The Stanley Cup Final when Pittsburgh hoisted the cup. All I can say is the video on sound are cool, but do not do justice. During the Anthem and other moments yoyr body literally shook. The building vibrated, you could feel the Organ and the Fog Horn when the Hawks scored in your chest.

    Wayne Messmer loves Chicago and really loves the Wolves ,Blackhawks and Cubs but the funny thing is he don,'t even live in Chicago. I find that strange if it was't for Chicago he would have to find someother place to sing. But Chicago sports team keep him and his family in life of luxury.

      That's exactly what it was. The fine arts don't belong on Madison Street. They belong on elitist, yuppie scumbag Michigan Avenue. Fine arts and sports don't mix. Come to watch and enjoy a game, not deal with someone's manic depression.

    Man I miss seeing these old stadiums and the fans on the TV. Never visited them but even here in Vancouver, Canada we knew the loud and intimidation factor going on when any game was played at the Blackhawks stadium. The old Boston Garden and the Forum in Montreal. Maple Leaf Gardens. Man those were the days.

    I was lucky enough to see my first hockey game there and it was a playoff game against the Maple leafs... It was one of the best nights of my life!!! I never witnessed such a atmosphere like that!!!! It was Unbelievable.. Then we went down to Chelios’s bar and grill, ate hotdogs, got totally wasted and a ton of Hawks players came in after the game... It was amazing!! And I believe that’s the same block where Wayne got shot a few days later

    The most tragic part about watching this video is knowing that the Blackhawks fired Messmer a year later because he performed the anthem for another team during the NHL lockout.

    • @BobMocarski
      @BobMocarski 4 роки тому

      It was not just another team. He was fired because Dollar Bill saw the Chicago Wolves as competition. Even though they are a minor league team. Wayne is also the senior vp of the wolves.

    • @stephenkammerling9479
      @stephenkammerling9479 Рік тому

      Bill Wirtz most likely was behind the firing. We remember him as the genius who stubbornly refused to televise home games inspite of all the evidence it was a counter productive policy. In his final years the Hawks were mediocre or worse, and they played before a lot of empty seats. After his death, his son Rocky took over the team, and Rocky immediately got rid of the home black out policy. The team quickly improved and would win 3 Stanley Cups. Attendance quickly soared. Rocky obviously grew up learning what NOT to do from his father's example.
