Ah those were the days, bit bashing with switch input. The Altair 8800 could take up to 4 VDUs if I remember rightly.
This was super interesting, maybe my new favorite method for calculating Pi. I wrote this in Python using mpmath, so i could calculate with arbitrary precision. I did some runs with 10000+ decimal digit precision and plotted the number of correct digits against n. It's a straight line. This method seems to give consistent 0.6 digits of Pi per n. Any geometric methods I've used before scaled horribly, but this one keeps going. It also seems the calculation accuracy should be (12/5) times that of the desired accuracy for the result, or the calculation starts to produce error. So if your program used double floats, ~16 decimal accuracy, that could get (5/12)*16 = ~7 correct decimals. About what you got. It took 2h 30min, but I used this method to calculate the first 50k decimals of Pi. Had to use 120k decimal accuracy for the calculations, and it was reached at about n=83300.
