Sennheiser EW-D intermodulation and gain

The Sennheiser EW-D wireless microphone system claims to be intermodulation-free. I test this out and also discuss some research I did into the difference between GAIN, AF OUT and TRIM.

GTD wireless microphone intermodulation headache
Переглядів 45Місяць тому
The GTD wireless microphone transmitters do indeed generate intermodulation products and the manufacturer provides no tools to avoid them. If you only own one quad receiver you'll probably be fine, but once you have two or three of these units you are going to run into issues.

So, if we use the Dante out on the ew-dx, will that give us 134dB of headroom? Will the protective mute function when above 110dB then be bypassed?

Chris, very insightful as alway. I still feel the Soundcraft has the simplest cueing system making it perfect for musical theatre. Question, opinion on the Impact? I've installed 3 now, 2 at local schools and one at a community theater. I haven't run into any issues, but not seeing on your list has me wondering why. As a side note I have sent a link to your hour-long soundcraft for musical theatre video to soooo many schools and local theaters. It is a fantastic asset and has helped so many people get more from those consoles. Thank You!!

I thought about that. I'm not really clear on what the real channel count is on the Impact. Isn't it only 32 mono input DSP channels? Is there a patch that actually increases that to 64? If so it's an even better deal. It's an interesting product - scribble strips, no annoying gain controls on each strip, fully parametric EQ.

EPAC has (4) Vari-Lite VL3500 Spots, (8) ETC ColorSource Spot Jr and (5) Elation Sixpar 100. These are all RGB+ instruments (no more gel!) that plug directly into power rather than dimmers and are fully controlled over a DMX daisy-chain. I used an ENTTEC DMX USB PRO adapter with the QLab MacBook. We only used two of the VL3500 movers to position strobe spots in different locations for the entrances of the ghosts. QLab has color mixing panels and motion control coordinate grids where appropriate for each instrument.

Your knowledge and explanations of how to incorporate this desk for live theatre is spot on. Could you explain the setting up/ storing and editing of cues for a show and how to save the show to a USB drive? I have an upcoming production of RENT at our HS and I would love to take advantage of the cue list so we can have students operate the console for the production. Many thanks!

Good tutorial, Chris. Nice and concise and you can tell you were prepared for it, but not totally scripted it either. A great balance. Too many UA-cam videos tend to ramble on unnecessarily for 4-5 minutes (or longer!). :) I managed to get a hold of Sophos Free Encryption before Sophos ended the free availability of that product (it's part of their Endpoint Protection program now, I believe). I liked it because of the ability to create encrypted self-extracting executable files, as opposed to (a) some proprietary format that would require the other user to have that special software to extract it or (b) requiring the use of PGP keys. Would you say the encryption features in 7-Zip are comparable to Sophos? If so, then there's really no need for Sophos. That said, if you want to try out Sophos, let me know via a reply or a PM on here and I can e-mail you the installer, if you wish. Cheers, Doug

Would it not be better to split the headset cable into Mic and head phones, ie just connect the microphone to the 7300 mike plug with an 8 pin mike socket and connect the ear pieces to the phones socket of the radio This would require the use of VOX. This gets round your loudspeaker muting problem. If a dynamic mike is used connect a1uF non polarised capacitor in series with the mike. Better still make a cable up from the radio to two sockets. one can be for Mic in and the other for PTT. 73 Nick

Hi Chris, firstly a big thankyou for producing this indepth tutorial, especially helpful to a relative newby like myself. I just have one question: The venue I am working in is a bizarre shape, very assymetrical, and has random pillars and walls which bounce the sound all over the place. I would like to do a GEQ for Left FOH and a separate one for Right FOH but I just can't figure out how........

Just finished 3 days of giddily turning my EXP2 inside-out to my own preferences... thanks for this clear simple talk... NOW: is there a way to get FX to follow groups without using a separate FX processor for EACH group...? My thought says that if a vocal mic in vocal group-1 is using FX1, then if ANYTHING in ANY other group uses FX1, the reverb comes back with EVERYBODYS reverb return from ALL groups... or am I missing something...

+Soundscenes DC:Music & Media FX 1-4 are separate busses each with a separate processor, whatever you dump into FX1 comes out of FX1.
