1940 Packard Custom Super Eight One-Eighty Club Sedan. A drive in the Virginia country on a cool, overcast day in late April 2024. The trip was over 100 miles and lasted about three hours. This 84 year old car is incredibly smooth and comfortable. Chuck was driving and Jim was in the back seat, the premier place to sit in this car. The 356 ci straight eight got 12.68 mpg on this journey.

Drive out to and through Middleburg, VA. This 84 year old car is completely at home on everything from high speed multi-lane toll roads to small country roads. It is incredibly comfortable to ride in as a passenger, and very easy to drive. Total distance was 93 miles.

Wow, that is a smooth running Packard 🇺🇲😊
I’ve watched this more than once and it really is a good demonstration video. I wonder if there is a detailed comparison of the 150hp and the 200? Wondering if I should avoid purchasing with a 150? Also, does it make a difference if it is a LSV or HSV?
Awesome!!
1:18 Nice, Nice… NICE, NICE, *NICE* Mmmmmmmm YEA ‘MERICA
GOTTA LOVE PACKARDS, even without 'ASKING THE MAN WHO OWNS ONE'
As Jay Leno would say; 'Road hugging weight.'
Absolutely gorgeous...thanks for the ride...
Lovely
A car that'd be fulfilling to be in, almost no matter what 'she's' doing
In high school mid-70's I had a chance to buy a '41 Packard Clipper straight 8 sedan. It'd been garaged 20 years. But I didn't have the $800 minimum it would have cost. And I had high school to finish, work for the summer, then college... But I've long loved Packards. Thanks for your videos.
This is super car with soul and always be alive. Hello from Azerbaijan.
Thank you. I really enjoy being able to ride along, even virtually. Brings back so many good memories of my youth.
When I was still running my shop I had one just like yours go thru. Complete engine rebuild with upgraded exhaust vales, tranny and overdrive, Steering parts, differential axle bearings and seals, rebuilt radiator, Wiring, etc. He would drive it during the summer months, bring it in for the winter with a shopping list of repairs and take it home for the summer. I often thought in addition to repairs he was using my shop for indoor winter storage. The las thing done was to move it up the road to a restorer that did the worlds greatest paint work.
Good afternoon Sir, would you listen to that wonderful vehicle. Just as Smooth and quiet as can be. Those Packards had the plan for a great automobile. Thanks for a truly relaxing and comfortable trip. You take care and good luck. luck
Absolutely beautiful. Nice to see another Packard out here. I'm in Stephens City.
Wonderful auto, from a perspective I've never experienced. Have seen Packards at shows, but never ever sat inside one. Thanks for the riding tour.
Beautiful dash, looks like it's mostly made of Bakelite.
WOW no plastic if you hit a new car, it will destroy it.
Shine on old girl.
Absolutely awesome! Fly baby fly!
Magnificent and stately automobile
nice car, but the most pointless rear lights ever 😂
You have to consider no such roads existed back then. The traffic wasn't heavy in most every place you drove. Additionally, the top speed limit was 45 mph. It was a different world and most cars had similar sized tail lights.
@@davids9588 Not so that the speed limit was 45. Freeways were a new thing in 1939, but there were a few multi-lane highways even then, and the speed limit was usually 50. Nevada, even then, didn't have a speed limit at all on the open road.
@@michaelbenardo5695 You are correct I should have used the words "most of the time." Nevada was very sparsly populated back then. You can see film footage of early freeways showing the very low level of traffic compared to today. You pretty much make the point I was getting at in my comment. People, on the whole, did not travel as fast. Unless they had purchased aftermarket or accessory tail lights the size is not "ridiculously small" given the conditions and time period. If I could attach a picture of the page from the November 13, 1938 issue of the Chicago Sunday Tribune showing the new 1939 cars you would see that all cars had similarly sized tail lights at that time from the factory. Large tail lights on american cars from the factory are a post WW 2 feature.
This car was outpowered only by the V16 Cadillac. Every other car, including the V8 Cad,, would lose a race with this car.
Love it!
I got to see/get inside of both a b24 liberator and a b29 superfortress back in 2019. The experience was quite amazing. They also had a p51d mustang and a Boeing Pt-17 stearman trainer biplane there.
Just curious about where this was shot. Pretty country. Great car!
Thank you. From McLean, VA out the Dulles toll road to Rt 50 to and through Middleburg VA, and around the roads in that area. Beautiful out there - will do more when the leaves first return in the beautiful, light pastel shades.
They used to say these engines were so smooth you could balance a quarter on the block
Always astounded at how quiet these Pack' are compared to the same vintage Ford or Chevy.
Absolutely beautiful car. But I swear it sounds like it has a tire separating. Reason I say, the faster he goes, the faster the noise, and the slower he goes, the slower the sound. Then stop when he stops. Check those tires 😮!!!
I used to do work for a local guy (sadly now gone) who had one of these. Did the tranny, overdrive, complete engine rebuild, (upgraded valve seats) many other things etc. "Ask the man who owns one" was their sales line. It was said that after the war was over for about five years and auto production was going well anyone who wanted a Packard had one. They were a long lasting auto and sales droped off. Some said they put themselves out of business.
That ole gal just glides along pretty darn good for 84. The old Packards were sone well made cars.
Our new stuff isn't this quite and smooth. We have gone backwards instead of forward in 80 years.
Lovely photography, and the Debussy is a perfect accompaniment!
What a pleasure it must be to own such a magnificent machine!
Ah the sound of that mighty straight 8 as it pulled away in the last seconds of the video.
Beautiful restoration! If only I had....
Congratulations, an extraordinary car and excellent video.
Thanks For The Ride Along ❤ What A Beutiful Car
One day, my Packard 110 will be restored, and I plan to drive it on a regular basis. Such fun!
Unfortunately, the Texas Raiders is no longer with us. RIP to the crew.....
Beautiful... It would be nice if such art graced our roads today.
I agree! Fortunately there are a few of these elegant cars that have been preserved. But for too many their majesty is hidden away in private collections.
