2024 Whitewater Kayaking in Review
2024 was a brief water season. We had very high and very low water...but it was packed into a short window of time. I got out on the river as many times as I could. I sliced. I playboated. I fished for smallies and trout. I surfed. I played in the river with my pup and fam. It was a different kind of season, still good in many ways.

Checking out the new whitewater park at Norfolk Nebraska. Water was low. The eddylines were deep enough for slicing though!

Riversurfing the new whitewater park at Norfolk Nebraska. The level was low and the feature was shallow. High water should be pretty fun.

Another year of whitewater kayaking fun. Record highwater and record low water. I surfed, sliced, and shared endless laughs with friends on the river. Thanks to the river fam for making countless memories with me.

Nice moves!!
Hi Hannah! How long of a surfboard would you recommend for a beginner river surfer?
Hi there! It really depends on what wave(s) you're surfing. Where do you plan to riversurf?
@@Hannahrayj well there is a wave where I live in Grand Junction, CO but I’m not sure that it is very big and it might not even be surf-able except in the high water parts of the season. But I’m close enough to Montrose that I would love to try there. And we are also close enough to Salt Lake City where apparently you can surf on the great salt lake. So idk. I’ve used a long foamie in the ocean, but it’s been awhile and I haven’t ever tried river surfing. I just really want to take it up!
@@kaylynnosburn4305 Cool! I liked my Badfish Shuvit, 5'2" at Montrose when I visited there a couple years ago. There are lots of boards around that length that would work too. Check out the local outfitter there, I believe they do rentals so you could try some boards www.montrosesurfandcycle.com/watersportsrentals I haven't surf in SLC, closest thing is the great lakes for me. And for lake surfing I used a completely different board from river surfing. Much longer for lake surfing (8-10' range) That much length in the river can make it difficult to surf river waves. Also, if you haven't already, theres a group on facebook that would be a helpful resource for you: Colorado River Surfers facebook.com/groups/1140967102610838/ I
@@Hannahrayj oh that’s so awesome! Thank you so much for taking the time to give me so much useful information 💗
@@kaylynnosburn4305 You are welcome! See you out on the river!

This looks so fun! Is the wave firing right now??
Unfortunately it’s not in right now. Still waiting for enough rain to bring the river up considerably.
@@Hannahrayj Thanks for sharing this video. I had no idea that this even existed. Definitely looking forward to making a trip down to check it out!
@@ArthurFellig holler when you're down this way! Here's flow and description info for the park. Please send rain! www.americanwhitewater.org/content/River/view/river-detail/10267/main
@@Hannahrayj Thanks lots! Will do. Looks like it's pretty low currently. Will the wave come up in the winter time? Or is it a spring thing??
It can come in anytime with enough rain. Typical rainier times are spring and early summer, but one big rainstorm can change it all. We’re on year two of drought, so rain has been sparse. Hope for lots of precipitation!
After growing up in cali, and riding the waves in Huntington Beach, this looks a little boring, your standing in one place, and although it's good for your balance,it's just not the same,I remember when I moved to Springfield Illinois, I felt like I was stuck on cornfield Island, and headed right back to the beach in cali 8 months later,I live about 2 hrs from the beach on the east coast now, even though I'm too old to surf, I have to have to be close to a beach,it was killing me when I was younger to be stuck in the middle of corncob island. 🤣👍🏝️
To each his own, glad you found your happy! I love my home.
Epic!
It was pretty great!
Was this a pfd or have you been there before?
It was our pfd. Brian, who led us down had been there before.
Nice video! Do you remember the level?
The recorded phone message at the dam was reporting 3200cfs.
@@Hannahrayj Thanks. We paddled it yesterday and it was much lower.
@@briankrueger1142 what was it for your run?
That’s awesome!! You’re Awesome!!! 🤙
Definitely a learning curve for me on this wave.
So sick!! I think I’m gonna come check this out
Nice surfing. You’re lucky to have such a nice wave so conveniently located. Are people able to surf full size paddle boards there? The wave shape looks very friendly.
Headstand while surfing? I can’t even...
Good job keep it up!
Good job keep it up!
_We really like these•••>__allmy.tips/SevylorKayaks?δθ__ Bought 2 for easy local lake trips and are satisfied. They blow up quick and have all of the parts you need. Stable enough to ride some boat wakes and even kick back on the seat._
_We just returned from a kayaking trip with friends•••>__allmy.tips/SevylorKayaks?ει__ They purchased hard side sit on top kayaks so we were able to compare them to the inflatable version. Our friends were ready to switch to the inflatable ones after using them. The inflatable ones are more comfortable, more stable and more portable. I am happy with my purchase!_
What kind and how thick of hoods you guys use in cold water paddling?
Use the NRS 2.5 hood for kayaking and for fall/spring surfing. www.nrs.com/product/15047.01/nrs-storm-hood And for winter surf I use an Xcel 5/4 drylock wetsuit with attached hood. I think the hood would be 4mm on this, but i'm not positive. www.xcelwetsuits.com/shop/product/womens-fullsuits/drylock-hooded-6-5mm-2?color=BLK&gclid=Cj0KCQiAxrbwBRCoARIsABEc9sg4tFCC2O2MohFCLyYnHLHQZwBYjHAHOI0JgbYPoAbopty4psww2gkaAr25EALw_wcB I've also used a 5mm diving hood, but it was pretty stiff, not very flexible.
Love to see fellow Iowa paddlers! Do you recall the pesh water level in this video?
Awe Thanks! We so love the Peshtigo. We got lucky and caught the Pesh lots of time this past year, from around 20" up to 39". I'd have to check back at my log book for the exact level in the video, but I believe it was somewhere around 30"
Awesome!
Mmmmmm Dagger Axiom love!!!.
:)
I should have asked. What level is best for the biggest green wave?
Hi David, It depends on what you're looking for as the wave changes character with the levels. For the most consistent green wave, although not the largest, look for 1000-1500cfs. For a larger, but potentially inconsistent/tricky to surf wave look for 3000-4500cfs. Hope this helps, happy surfing!
I LOVE IT!! I'm SO jealous. I gotta visit!
Hi Hannah, Can you explain the difference in the two Antix? It seemed like the first multi color boat had more volume than the solid red one.
I'll send you an email.
Hey Alyssa, email me and I'll give you the scoop for whitewater kayaking. Email is hannah_rayj@yahoo.com
Okay question.. My friends and I want to try out whitewater rafting, is this a nice beginner spot?
The Manchester whitewater park is an excellent place for beginners, although you'll be hard pressed to find anyone rafting the whitewater parks in Iowa. Most people are whitewater kayaking, whitewater stand up paddle boarding and tubing/swimming at the parks. This park is friendly for new people, but wear a proper fitting PDF and a helmet and sturdy shoes are strongly suggested. Its still a wild river with current, rocks, etc, and we are mammals with no gills. A little common sense goes a long ways. Where are you located? I'd be happy to point you in the right direction for rafting.
+mouszehrc I meant kayaking! Thanks so much! We're all really excited to go!
