KIM JUN SU first introduced me to Pansori close to 8 years ago. He appeared on “I Can Hear Your Voice”, Korea’s ‘American Idol’. Except, his version was an acoustic rock/Pansori hybrid. It was an excellent -albeit brief - performance.

Wow, I really enjoyed that. As someone unfamiliar with this music, the arrangement of drum and solo instrument gave me a kind of Indian classical music feeling. Near the end also, where the pace was much faster and the relationship between the drum and Ajaeng part felt much more interconnected or interactive, it almost gave me similar sensation to a climactic moment in a jazz solo where players are totally playing with eachother, with fast lines interweaving to create a larger feeling. The small vocalizations you could hear kind of nudged this feeling over the edge, as if the players were vocally reacting to each other's parts as they were playing as sometimes happens in jazz.
