My friend told me that if I wanted to listen to a sad song this would be perfect, I was asking for sad not haunting...

I noticed that none of the comments mention the background of the music. The New Your Philharmonic commissioned Adams to write a commemorative work for the 1st anniversary of the tragedy. They got a sterling work of art and Adams received a Pulitzer for it. No small thing.

Also studying John Adams in music class. Amazing piece, brilliant! The images chosen definitely put me right back in those days surrounding 9/11. Very touching. Thank you.

when the piece started i didnt realize that it was the prerecorded tapes i thought it was like some people talking before a concert. then i started hearing all the street things like the police and people walking. this piece brings you into another realm and is so surreal its amazing.

Interesting. Initially I hadn't considered Ives, but it does echo the Unanswered Question in atmosphere.

More visceral and effective? Adams wasn't trying to represent terror or horror, they are completely different pieces. I don't think you can say one is more effective than the other without backing it up with really well thought arguments.
