But do remember smooth Landings must not always be a safer one so a pilot landing the aircraft abit hard but at the touchdown point with safety in his or her mind is always a better one than of a very smooth landing but landing after wasting 1000ft of the runway for the flare. We are taught at the beginning "Runway left behind is of no use!"
Very true. The fatal accidents of Air India Express flights 1344 of Calicut and flight 812 of Mangalore are very apt examples of the same. Losing precious length of runway without touching down beyond the touchdown marker is always risky and it's better to hit the main gear asap or to immediately hit toga and go around. All these decisions are taken in split seconds when 75000 kg of metal + human lives are travelling at more than 250 kms per hour during landing.. and one decision of yours matters the most in split second whether it will lift off again, land safely or overshoot the runway
