I think it works best with lots of practice beforehand so it becomes habit and the default. Also if someone is coping well with contractions they should be able to control their breathing. Partners and doulas can help with regulating breathing as well.

I did pretty good but I've done meditation on off for most of my life so I'm sure that helped. However I lost control when my boyfriend wasn't answering his phone and I started to panic and I became stressed, lost control of breathing and the pain seemed worse. Once he was with me I felt more at peace and was able to focus on breathing and relaxation again. But I agree, practice ahead of time is the best advice. Try meditation too!

It’s weird but this is the only way I was able to birth my 2 children Naturally. The breathing techniques it and reminding myself to not tense up and breath my baby down was the only way I got through it.

It is for the first stage of labor which is not so bad. The second and third stage is the one where the breathing has to be different and you have to bear more of the pain.

Same breathing recommended for anxiety attacks!
