Part 5/6 of Dad's Homegoing 爸爸的告别仪式 [[26 October 2024]]
The last walk.
Dad was resting on the shoulders of the male members of our family as we made our way out of the wake venue, whilst "I did it my way" by Frank Sinatra was being played by the Angmoh Band. Before Dad passed, he had given specific instructions that he wanted "I did it my way" to be played at his funeral (though of course, at the time of discussing these things, we thought it would be a matter to fuss about 20 to 30 years from now. We did not expect Dad's demise to be this soon).
I opted for no chanting music blaring from the hearse although that is usually the norm. Dad wouldn't have ordinarily listened to those whilst alive anyway. So why should he in death? Instead, the hearse played a couple of his favourite songs (from artists like Bryan Adams, Michael Bolton and Collin Raye) on his final journey to Mandai Crematorium. Dad would have much preferred that, I am sure of it. If you had noticed, "I did it my way" was also the first song that was played by the hearse.
The pallbearers took turns to carry Dad on their shoulders, as the procession was led by the Muscial Float, Dua Kee and Gongguan.

The respective troupe performers paid their last respects to my Dad. We then took our last looks of Dad, to the tune of Auld Lang Syne performed by the Angmoh Band, before his coffin was sealed. As much as I don't wish for my immediate memory of my Dad to be that of him laying in his casket, I tried to remember his face as best as I humanly could because that would have been the last time that ...

A Musical Float was hired to lead the procession during the last walk. The Float, decorated with flowers and LED lightbox displays, played songs such as "父亲" and "我的爸爸" from its speakers onboard. The big flags (大企, also pronounced as "Dua Kee" in Teochew) are usually only performed if the decedent has 3 generations or more. My Dad was already the proud Grandpa of 2 when he passed on, so we coul...

Followed by Dad's godsons, goddaughters and their respective spouses/children. Finally, Dad's siblings, led by his younger brother and younger sister, and/or their families. After which, Dad's godsiblings and other relatives/friends paid their final re...

So this marks the commencement of Dad's funeral procession for the day. My Dad enjoyed beer in his lifetime- so as you can see, my cousin (who isn't a terribly good drinker himself) offered some beer to my dad whilst the Live Band was setting up. Live Bands (or more commonly known as "Angmoh Band" by the older folks here in Singapore) are a way to celebrate the life of the deceased by playing s...
