When snow arrives in the Norfolk Broads
When snow arrived in the Norfolk Broads last weekend , I decided to go for a walk. Following public footpaths, through the woods and then along a further track, I found enough snow and ice to film. It’s muddy in places but luckily it was frozen and so much easier to walk on. The sunshine kept the cold at bay , making it a fantastic winter walk.
This time of year, when there are no leaves on the trees, you see so much more of the surroundings.

Last week I stayed 3 days in Norwich to make it easier to film at Norwich Airport. It was freezing cold and my weather app said it felt like -10! Very windy too but so much fun being able to be so close to the planes and helicopters. I saw planes from Tui, British Airways, KLM, Lufthansa and Ryanair. Eider Ducks at Sea Palling December 2024

A couple of years ago when there was an Eider duck in Lowestoft, I went several times to look for it but it had moved on. Now, a lot closer to my home, are a group of 5 Eider Duck in Sea Palling. How amazing is that. It took me about 10 minutes to locate them, but there they were, happily swimming around beside the rocks. Today’s video is filmed in Thetford. I started the day climbing to the top of Thetford Castle. All 88 steps. At the top, you are rewarded with the most magnificent view. Thank you Richard. I had a flask of coffee and a hot water bottle. Then went back to my hotel to refill them at lunch time , then straight back out again to the ✈️. I think I may need both once again for tomorrow’s filming. My iPhone weather app is showing -9 tonight. We had snow earlier this evening 🥶❄️⛄️😱

Happy new year Gordon, I feed all the birds big or small. Even the red legged partridge. I do understand that not everyone likes them.
I too have a pigeon that likes to hoover up the goodies on my old-school bird table. Just the one at the mo so I reckon he hasn't told his mates 😂 A robin and various other small birds, two magpies and a grey squirrel. No starlings or sparrows. I did have a blackbird before Christmas but no sign of him now. Richard Notts

That is so kind Gordon, thank you. Not professional videos, I know but I just enjoy being outside and like to share what I’ve seen. Minsmere is fantastic every day of the year. Tomorrow’s video, I filmed yesterday morning, yes Christmas Day 🤭. I found gulls getting themselves ready , as they were off out for their Christmas lunch 😉. Wait until you see the ducks I found 😂😂😂 and the most surprising sight of the year. Did I get a photo? Sadly not but there’s no mistaking the tail I saw. I won’t spoil it and say. Hi Lisa I bet it has been quiet of late on the Hickling side of Potter Heigham bridge. I was listening to a boat salesman the other day. He said that boats designed to go under Potter Heigham bridge have been unable to for the last couple of years.
It is very quiet everywhere at the minute I did manage to find a couple of boats for tomorrow’s video though. I only see sailing boats at Hickling these days. Perhaps the odd day boat from Whispering Reeds.

Interesting Leasa. I don't think I have ever been to Thetford Castle. Like you, I have never seen a Goose with a ring around its neck....looks a bit tight to me - but what do I know 🤔 Lucky you capturing the Kingfisher!
I never knew Thetford had a Castle once upon a time. I love visiting new places and this was a lovely place to add to list of videos. That neck ring did look tight didn’t it. I looked online and it seems, that is the correct place for Canada geese. 🪿 I had been to Lynford Arboretum previously, a magnificent place for bird watching.
Had to chuckle at that sheep climbing the stairs, perhaps he was getting his steps in 😂. Love the idea of the chatty bench too, what a lovely idea 😊

Never mind the heavy breathing, if you climbed up there then you're allowed. A mountain in Norfolk - who knew? I haven't heard of neck rings either, perhaps it's a Norfolk trait. I will have to ask. Like the little grebes. We used to call them dabchicks back in my early days of bird watching. You certainly covered some ground that day so don't tell me you're not fit. Great video Lisa, thank you
It was a very busy day. The sheep climbed the steps better than I did 😂 The ring tag seemed a bit tight on the goose. Very odd to see but it seems it is a thing they do. I used to look for the tags and send the details away to the various universities/ places recording their travels. You do get lovely information back from them. Nice footages! I noticed the “bird vs fish” initially. That looks like a large fish (do you know what kind?) the bird caught! The fish was struggling, but the hungry Grebe managed to fully consume (alive?!) it all okay? It looked like the unlucky thing was desperately trying to make a “C-shape” to prevent sliding down that throat! I wonder, does the large fish stand any chance of escaping if eaten in that condition? Maybe it can turn around inside the elastic throat/stomach and has a chance of survival here.
