Hi! I'm repairing a Fostex x26 at the moment. The motor does not spin, the rest of the device lights up (leds, meters). I did notice once opening it that the Voltage Regulator was slightly broken, as if someone screwed it in too tightly and chipped the top off it. Would this make sense as to why the motor would not be spinning? I would presume nothing else would light up if it was broken but perhaps the motor is just shot.
@@padraiq Hi, yes this is mostly the reason if the regulator pcb is broken, as the crack usualy makes open in the connections not a short
@3rdisland477 I measured the volt regulator and it is reading 2.2v. Also tested the motor and is getting 12.2v? SHW2R so it is a 12v motor. When off and manually spun the motor does generate some volts so I'm not sure what is going on, any ideas?
Hi I'm having the same issue. So when I received mine from eBay it came with out the power adaptor. Was the adaptor you displayed in this video the correct one to use. I purchased the AC/DC PV-1250N. The plus sign is on the left hand side, but machine powers on with no sound. Should I try finding the Adaptor before repair.
@@Ilikethatmusic_typebeats Hi, the power adapter should be DC12V with (-) negative center, if it powers up with no sound on all track then go a head and replace the caps as in the video Good luck
@@3rdisland477 Thank you, is there a power supply company or link to recommend?
I just picked one of these up and am having this issue. I’ve glued the head base and reshaped the spring, but the issue persists. Is there anything else that can cause this?
@@_sethweaver no thing more, make sure you did the prosess accuratly and the spring make enough tension to move the head base You can send it to me for full refurbishment for $50
I have the same problem and the same symptoms with my machine, is it possible that this resistance problem is also present on mine?
@@leololol9165 hi, this is a fuse risistance, go ahead and short it ans see if it solve the sound issue
thank you for the advice What do you mean by short circuiting the resistance, should I replace it instead?
HI, GREAT VIDEO! I just picked up a 260 but the tape head wont engage and and nothing turns. Also, the STOP button is a bit broken. Can we speak about me shipping it to you for an overhaul? Thanks!! :)
@@robertmasonofficial Hi, thanks for your comment, contact me on: cybersens@hotmail.com
@@3rdisland477 message sent! :)
I tried both steps - the 1st one seems to be the problem, the FF/REW selector gear is moving freely after cleaning and lubrication but the mechanism only works while upright, when laid flat the gear doesn't move when ff/rew is selected or when pause is pressed. Any possible explanations? Thanks
@@_ponkachonka check the ff/rew belt, check the ff/rew main mech gear if it's stucked,
@@3rdisland477 The belts seem to operate OK and the actual rewinding mechanism does function, it’s just not engaging in the first place if it isn’t tilted upright so I don’t know if the selector gear is chipped? In any case I could try a belt replacement…?
Thank you so much, I followed your steps, on my porta two deck, but it still isn’t lifting high enough to touch the rollers to play. Can I buy that piece from somewhere or do you know where I can buy one at ?
My Porta 03 has the same problem. Do you think it's ok to use a 2SB649A transistor to replace the original? I couldn't find a B891. Thank you so much for your videos! Here it is 7 years later and many people are still finding them so helpful.
@@kidsbikerecycling842 hi, I did not tray B649, use 2SA715, it's available on ebay
I always find your information useful. Thank you. I have a PortaOne and I can hear the input sound and record to tape, but when I play it back the tape works but the vu meter doesn't move and no sound comes out. Can you give me some advice?
@@PORTA777 thank you, hearing the sound does not mean it's being recorded, check the recording (LED) recording indicator when you press (record) it should converts from blinking to solid, if not, check the micro switch on the end of the cassette housing which is activated by the cassette recording/ safe toung, clean and make sure that it makes contact when inserting the cassette in, Good luck
Thank you for your reply. When I play a tape recorded with Porta One on another mtr, it is recorded, so it seems that the playback function of Porta One is broken. I think it is a mechanical failure, not an operating error. Thank you in advance.
Excellent video. I'm curious why WD40 was used instead of a silicon grease or lithium grease. Cheers.

@@3rdisland477 that would be amazing. Since making my comment, I’ve at least learned my AC adapter had the wrong polarity. Ordered a correct one. But that doesn’t mean it’s going to power up. I found the porta 05 HS at a thrift store this morning.

@@kidsbikerecycling842 so happy that my video could helped you to get your machine works again
Amazing!!!!! I'll need to buy some cassettes now!
I already ordered a belt, but out of curiosity: I use my 280 quite often actually. I was trying to make a short term substitute belt using a skinny rubber band while I wait for the proper replacement. Tension was a little high, but it fit. Only issue was that it kept falling off the flywheel after a few rotations. Is that to be expected for a belt that’s not the right size? Or is this issue likely to carry over to the proper belt, meaning I must fix something that might be wrong with the assembly?
Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge! incredible! One question, after carrying out the repair as you did in the video, is it necessary to calibrate the equipment?
@@gustavoinfante both ereas and playback/record heads should be calibreted and alignment to the 4 track paths of the tape, otherwise heads will not read or write on the exact path and tracks wil be interfere in each others
@@3rdisland477 Thank you very much again, I'll look into how to do the calibration! you helped a lot!!
Question about the first Tascam in the video, I found one for like 20$ but the record and play button will not press down. What causes this? Any info is appreciated.
@@b33lz normaly record button does not pressed down with no cassette or with a protected cassette othewise there should be a mechanism issue

I have the Japanese version of the 464. It has no XLR, but has BBE sonic maximiser.
@@oinkooink that's the most advanced version of the analog tape recorders at that time
@@3rdisland477 Yeah about 1991 I think hey. I'm going to put some songs up on youtube eventually.
Do you know if the Japanese BBE model has balanced trs inputs?
@@daynemin I can't say for sure.
Hello 3rd Island, thank you so much for sharing all this knowledge, it saved me so much time already! I was wondering if you knew anything about a X-28 not rewinding? All other functions works, when i press Rewind, it starts 1sec and then literally switches off, screens test all position. Like a false contact? I took it all apart, plugged it, the tape rewind fine when the module in my hands, other boards like the mixing board taken off.
@@Francois-k1x thank you for the kind comment, let me ask you question ; when you press REW.. do you get a REW sign on the display ?
@@3rdisland477 Hello, thank you for taking so quickly your time for answering. I think it does turn on. Just quickly and then switches off. I just tried more things, as I said it seems to work some times (the REW). It did again and i found out that while plugging (P604) the red socket (it carries +5V, -5V, GND as well as Mute) to the mixer board. So Not sure how but the mixer board might have a dead component? a short circuit of a kind, thought I find it strange that it only appears with REW. Getting closer to the problem...
I have a MT2x that I would like to get functioning again. I imagine that you take in repairs? If so, could you send me to your website?

I just had the same issue with my Fostex 380S. I burnished the switch contacts with some notebook paper, and it took the corrosion off of the switch contacts. This was a thing we did with old rotary telephone stepper switches way back in the 80's and 90's. We used paper if we did not have a hand burnishing tool. Using very fine grain sand paper will work okay since these are low voltage low current switch contacts. Your video helped me diagnose why my unit would power on and just have all of the display elements lit up indicating an error condition. So, this can also be applied to the 380S model. Now I have to find out why the heads and Capstan are not functioning.
Good idea ❤
Great video ! Thanks
Great video really helped. So I got the Porta two working. Everything seams Ok. Only problem is the pause button. It works fine but does not stay engaged. If you let go it starts again. Any ideas how to fix this would be appreciated. Thanks .
Thanks, there is 2 parts under the pinch roller, the plastic lock toung and a spring, check these 2 parts and clean if any sand in the groov
Hi super thanks, all working now. The white plastic lock was off to the side a bit. I pushed it back over the pin for the pause. Top man, many thanks.

Hey! My MT2X is having a problem that i don’t quite understand. There is a tape stuck in the machine and the motor is stuck running in play. I believe i saw on another video someone say that the buttons to control the tape mechanism are mechanical not solenoid driven. I have not opened the face of it up as i am not an electronic guy. Is this something i could possibly address or would i be better off taking it to a professional
Yes this is true, MT2X is half auto mechanism and not solenoud, you can release the tape by pressing the head base backword by screw driver and meanwhile pull up the cassette from the housing using your finger The defect is a slack belt, you can then open the machine and replace a new tape Goid luck
@@3rdisland477 thanks so much for responding with some help! I’ll have to try this out today!
@@3rdisland477 thanks so much for responding your help got me some progress! so i was able to get the tape out of the machine by compressing the head base. I’m confused still why the head is stuck up, and none of the buttons have any effect. I can hear the machine making a whirring noise that i don’t remember it making (but i haven’t tried to use this thing in a couple years so that may be normal) and it seems to be coming from the tape mechanism area. It doesn’t seem like the mechanism is playing however, as the tape gear arms aren’t spinning (sorry i don’t know the terminology) any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated. I really was not expecting a response and i really do appreciate your help
Just an update. There is definitely something stuck running. When i adjust the “pitch” slider i can hear the what ever is moving speeding up and turning down with the tape speed
