I'm use Server 2016 Essentials mainly to backup network pc's and after cutting the cable cord a media server. my concern is support that's ending soon, as a "look up the answer for hours if something goes wrong" person, how easy is it to do a "tongue in-cheek" simple upgrade or will I need to do a fresh install. I don't use if for anything else but back-and to have a 2nd and 3rd copy of thing. Thanks in advance.

Does MS offer some sort of tool I can use to check if my computer meets their hardware requirements? I'd like to try it, but I the hardware requirements webpage from MS leaves me with more questions than answers. Also do any of these Windows Server 2025 versions include any CALs or do you always have to buy even the first 5 CALs seperately?

Running 2016 Essentials for home use as a media server and pc/file backup. I know the network backup is gone after 19 and willing to move to external storage (at the sacrifice of speed) but how would I access the server as I now use RDC? I'll also loose full network Workstation backup 1pc and 4 laptops, and suggestion on a solution for that other than online, don't want a continued cost? Thanks

I believe Microsoft is seeing about 70,000 attempted hacks per second. This is why they want tpm 2.0 requirement. Ideally with biometrics either fingerprint or face ID put in a seperate segment of the computer. I agree with Microsoft. Most modern phones use seperate segments for biometrics and security keys. This prevents hacks. The only way i consider Microsoft to not require TPM 2.0 would be to put a permanent line above or below the pc screen saying. "TPM 2.0 not available, please consider asynchronous 2 security keys (one backup) like yubikeys to secure your PC from hacking. Microsoft will be blamed if your PC is not secure. Sms cloning and email take overs are becoming rampant. Yubikeys as a first authentication, and authenticator apps as a secondary back up need to be a backup...if tpm 2.0 not available.

What is the reluctance to switch from 10 to 11? My old devices incapable of running Windows 11 (typically running Windows 10 in 32-bit mode with 2 GB RAM, slow CPU, and no TPM) have become pretty darn useless, barely fast enough to run UA-cam without hesitancy. You wouldn't put up with such a spec in a phone. A typical Android or Apple phone has far more RAM, far more CPU cores, loads of storage, and is always 64-bit.

Need 100% of incoming and outgoing email stored locally so i can access all emails when off-line. I get copies are on MS servers but historically (over 30 years) I've needed access to emails when lost connections or when I've needed to be off-line. So 6 months ago switched to Thunderbird and transferred all pst's (around 20) to Thunderbird folders using a third party app (forget name right now)

I think Microsoft forgot why many of their os did not do well or had slow adoption because they had stuff that Microsoft wanted or was so terribly implemented that was bad for either everyone else or at least the majority that it was only when Microsoft back tracked or fixed their mistake was there any change and increase in those number at all window me and windows 8.0 being perfect examples also TPMs are no better than a hardware version of two step verification by a circuit tied SIM card just it keeps it all in one place likely the only people who will thank Microsoft for forced TPM is the high tech hackers who only need that one point of attack to take control of a computer now and two step verification has been cracked now so how long is it going to be for TPM not long I think probably even easier with buggy intel chips older architecture as a hint on that one as example and also what I nickname to myself the crowd wave event when Microsoft and Crowdstrike on so many mistakes on so many levels messed up and basically lock people not far from that of ransom ware out of their computer and Microsoft want the world to give them more trust and they can not even get the management of what should have been a simple update right not to mention most places outside of America do not have in most case anywhere the amount of stable modern internet to make alway online accounts viable as even in the UK only about 1 out 5 areas have reliable communication and internet for something of that scale and that is generally just certain areas of the south of England mainly so think how it is for poorer or more sparse countries that is one of the other many reasons people like windows offline mode fixes a problem/failure that Microsoft internet providers and governments created in some shape or form and people in many case do not use Microsoft bitlocker and security software as there are softwares from other companies that out do a lot of those programs features and support Microsoft provide and in some case at less of a cost also never got why Microsoft try to force people to use their software when in certain clear examples they do not even aspect of their own software themselves and use other companies instead like for most of the operation of Microsoft’s data centres as an example if Microsoft do not use their software why must everyone else?.

Just like it worked before Windows 11; You simply add better components to suit your needs. I DON'T WANT or NEED a Microsoft account! M$ should stop hiding the Local Account option. It's MY COMPUITER!!! As for BitLocker and the TPM, consider what will happen if the TPM fails, or BitLocker needs your keys stored in your M$ account, but you can't boot to access your M$ account!! The fact that they don't allow users to operate without being logged into MS account breaks user trust. I'm not at all surprised at Win11 less than expected market share. Microsoft has turned Windows into adware/spyware, and on top of that Microsoft unreasonable hardware restrictions will create a huge number of useless PCs. I suspect more and more people are/will install Linux on that "useless" hardware. I tried Linux on one of my laptops that doesn't qualify for Win11 and I liked it so much I purchased a new Dell XPS 15 that came with Win11.. I installed Linux on a second SSD making the machine dual bootable, Win11 & Linux. I'm so happy with Linux I rarely boot into Windows (once a month so it can get updates). The next year will be interesting to how everyone else handles this Microsoft indiscretion.

TPM requirement is I am sure a part of the equation but I hear more discomfort with how invasive Win11 is. From forced login to Microsoft account to eminent threats of the shark jumping Recall "feature", people want their computer to be THEIRS not Microsoft's and the overt shift to big brother invasive features by Microsoft has lead to an exodus. The only way one can have their own computer in 2024 is to avoid Windows 11 altogether.

There is one simple obvious solution… Have Win 11 Home as single user license without TPM reqmt. Have Win 11 Business with multiple user license with TPM reqmt. Why Microsoft doesn't want to take this route? I don't get it. Currently, people will need to replace their hardware. That's not making Microsoft any more money. In the other way, people will still use their OS.

This issue really doesn't impact large organizations, because they are leasing PCs for 3-5 years or simply replacing them after a similar period. Thus, anything they are running will handle Windows 11 unmodified. This really only impacts small businesses and home users who don't upgrade as frequently, though there are still a lot of such users. However, in a way, Microsoft is right to push OS-level encryption. The problem is they are doing it in the most self-serving way possible by trying to force a Microsoft account, even if that mitigates the problem of lost encryption keys due to hardware failure. It's the same story with One Drive. A good idea, but making it mandatory feels like it's more about the lock-in than helping users. Fortunately, thanks to government restrictions on PCs in secure areas, there will always be ways around all of that for Pro/Enterprise versions of Windows. However, that still leaves the CPU issue. I do think Microsoft should back off on the CPU requirement, as Skylake and Kaby Lake CPUs are more than adequate to run Windows 11. I'm running 23H2 bare-metal on an i7-6700 system (Dell Optiplex) and it runs easily as well as Windows 10 did. It encodes video, handles light NAS services, etc. like a champ, and it has a TPM 2.0 chip in it. There are a ton of these machines that would be perfectly fine that will end up as e-waste or continue to run unsupported Windows 10. Simply backing off on the CPU requirement would go a long way IMO and still not hurt their "security profile"

"Skylake and Kaby Lake CPUs are more than adequate to run Windows" My i7-3930K and E5-2697-v2 are more than adequate ... even an old Dell Optiplex 790 with 3 GHz i3 2c 2t can cope with office & web!!!

@@Lord-Sméagol Agreed. I recently sold my i7-3770 system and it was running 23H2. For average web surfing and playing videos, it was perfectly fine, but I could feel it chugging at times where my i7-6700 did not. Not much, but enough that it was starting to become noticeable. For the most part, I would say that if it runs Windows 10 competently it can run Windows 11 about as well.

@@pyiffer Apparently Tim Apple is focusing on gaming more lately, convincing companies to start porting their games natively to macOS like Cyberpunk. There's also some wine-based tools so I guess if the hardware can handle it, gaming on Mac may be as close as linux to finally happening.

It really is nice to just boot the computer and not have to worry about being denied access to your own computer for the most arbitrary or absurd reason. They just want spy on everything you do and lock you out for the most idiotic reasons. We must show them that we can not tolerate this and will not. There are better OSes that will run just fine on older hardware and one of the many Linux "distros" are that exact thing. They are much less bloated and they don't steal your system resources to use them to spy on you and possibly lock you out for the most absurd reason you have ever heard in your entire life! We need Musk to create something like a "Tesla OS"! We need more options other than just the 3 main ones: Windows, Mac and Linux.

Lol, Musk would take what MS is doing and make it even worse and more invasive. We don't need Musk taking a dump on anything more than he already has.

In this days where we have chips with NPUs and everyone is talking about AI I wonder why are there only build in NPUs and not external NPUs (for PCIE) available/comming?

"..most people watching this channel does not fowllow..." Well, maybe they are like me, and use linux but got recommended this video. If you as a tech influencer does not use your "influence" on your viewer to INFORM THEM OF ALTERNATIVES I really don't have much respect for you. Microsoft are going WAY to far with their bs and disrespect against their users. You know, an alternative operating system that they do NOT have to pay for to get spied on, or handed ads to. TPM = better security my a** Remember how an img to the bios could break security? Where was the "tpm security" then hmm? I grant tpm is useful within userspace for example, but as a requirement for the os? I call bs. Watch a snapdragon or some other AI chipset become a requirement for win 12 so they can sell even more harware like they did with tpm, and add ever more to the e waste! 👍

Sorry Microsoft, your Windows 11 does not meet my security and privacy requirements

Doesn't meet mine either. Microsoft turned it into adware/spyware. Nothing secure about that.

I have a 6 year old Lenovo Thinkpad that met all the Windows 11 requirements except for the CPU. I installed 24H2 from an ISO and other than initially getting a prompt indicating the unit did not meet the requirements, I did the Accept option and the install continued to completion. I have had no issues at all, and not even a watermark indicator that the system did not meet requirements. I am also getting all the updates being rolled out.

I have a 10 year old thinkpad G1 (I think it is). I installed linux on it and it runs like it was brand new. xD Here comes the influx of DEATH cheap refurnished laptops again for me to grab up second hand for close to nothing and give to my friends as gifts. :)
