Yeah, these things are absolutely critical to backpacking. If you going to be without tap water for a week hiking, carrying that water simply isnt possible.

For those of you considering buying this product, check out the Sawyer Mini. Its main benefit is that is can purify 100x the volume of this product. Wish I had done a bit more research before buying a Life Straw.

So my problem is that you didn't explain why the water is still an odd colour. How can it actually be clean if not clear? It must be contaminated with something surely?

It's nice to see it really does what it says it does. It would be nice if it would clean the water to a crystal clear color. It would be nice to have it tested to see exactly what the color is. Maybe it is the algae color.

Great video and test, especially when comparing the pond water under the microscope and then the Life Straw filtered water. And I'm guessing you survived your test drink. One of the comments below about certain chemicals that can't be filtered out is a good caution to be aware of. Thanks again for taking the time to perform the test and record the video. Two thumbs way up! (ala Ebert & Siskel RIP)

The nasties that are blocked - and build up - on one side of the filter. Can they be removed somehow. Can this LifeStraw be backflushed?

The maximum magnification of an optical microscope is 1000x-1500x, with good optics. 2000x is not possible due to wavelength limitations.

would be nice to see water with actual pathogens not algae. Just for reference: Green Algae is commonly 2 to 7 μm Solitary green algal cells are generally larger than those of cyanobacteria Common bacteria protected against as advertised by most filter companies: Giardia lamblia trophozoites are pear shaped and they measure 10-20 μm in length and 5-15 μm in width A common well water parasite is: Cryptosporidium spp. oocysts are rounded and measure 4.2 to 5.4 µm in diameter Source: CDC
