Dum estas inchoatur
Amene tempore,
Phebusque dominatur
Depulso frigore.
Unius in amore
Puelle vulneror
Multimodo dolore,
Per quem et aterror.
Ut mei misereatur,
Ut me recipiat,
Et declinetur ad me,
Et ita desinat!
Plaint (English Translation)
While summer, slowly passing,
Gives day its fullest light,
While Phoebus dwells in high
Forgetting winter's night.
Oh! That my heart sore-wounded
With unrequited love
Might in desolate longing
Make hers in answer move.
And give me some little pity
My aching heart to ease,
And tenderly lean o'er me,
And bring my spirit peace.
This work is the second of four Mediaeval Latin Lyrics written by Edmund Rubbra. This recording is sung by baritone, Stephen Varcoe "Rubbra chose secular Latin texts from the Carmina Burana manuscript and from the poetry of Peter Abelard (1079-1142). These four Latin Lyrics were originally set for chorus and the last two given their first performance in this guise as part of a BBC contemporary music concert in 1934. The pieces were found to be too difficult in this medium, however, and were reworked after the war as settings for baritone and string orchestra. In this form they had their first performance on March 11, 1947 at the Wigmore Hall with Robert Irwin as the soloist.
In these songs the vocal line subtly expresses both the playful and ardent nature of the texts, whilst the string orchestra does not just accompany but comments on the nature of the words. For example, as Ralph Grover points out in his book on Rubbra, there is a strong contrast between the stark vocal line and the highly chromatic accompaniment in the Abelard setting, 'Planctus' (Lament). The strings depict the desolation of the grief-ridden text, whilst the vocal line portrays the difficulty of coming to terms with a personal loss."
