DIY Covert Meshtastic Node - Full Build Guide
This product is a well thought out prepping item, it really makes people sit down and go over different situations and plan accordingly I fear many preppers just build a bug out bag and that ends their thought process on different emergency situations. I can't wait to purchase this and make a video of the product on my channel !!

@ sweet I got one! Thanks
The USB Type-C connector should have been placed at the bottom of the case to prevent rainwater from entering.
@@doctorbsd it has a waterproof cap. Placing it on top actually prevents pooling if water were to make it in to the cap, which would cause connector corrosion. I’ve had two outside in this configuration for a few months in the rain and snow with no issues!
Hi! Nice video. Got one question. Can the RAK board CHARGE the battery if the USB-C is connected? Does it act like a charger if powered?
@@SteveNilsen yes, it will charge the battery!
Hey so I wanted to find a binder just like that and idk what they are called and the type of paper but blank and idk what size the paper is I think it would be perfect for my art and the zippered book is awesome can you possibly help me with that info thank you
I really like the 6 ring binder and how secure it looks

@ do they do wholesale with you if you buy in bulk or do you just buy individual ones and what size paper is that looking for graph paper ones like the note book ones Or blanks
Would like to see a solar option. If I want to throw one of these in the top of a tree to serve a community, and be relatively maintenance free.
Great product 😊

Great work on these, look forward to hearing more about your products!
@@Tofu_the_weenie thanks! We have a lot of good things in store soon 😉
I just purchased 2 of them and the digital upgrade!!! The goal is for myself and the wife each to have a clone on us! Something that we're gonna be doing is completing the digital version and putting it on a micro SD card. It's convenient and essentially takes up no space. It might be a cool addional product for yall to carry if you wanted to offer it.

Im fried and tired af but yes this is a cool concept
If you're wondering what's going on in this video, let me explain. These devices are Meshtastic nodes. They are essentially like walkie talkies, but for texting only... so walkie texties! They use radio waves to send data to other similar devices without using any cell service or wifi. In this video, I testing the use of these devices with an app called ATAK, which is used for tactical awareness. In this case, I'm simply testing out the integration between ATAK and the Meshtastic devices to show how it works. The purpose of this test as it relates to our company is to demonstrate one example of how comms can be used, and we hope it inspires you to think about trying things like this out!
Why put the usb port and breather on the top vs the bottom? I would think it would be more water resistant on the bottom so I'm really curious the reasoning. I just got my stuff today from watching your videos so before I drill it I just wanted to clarify it.
@@lindelof1221 i mounted the one in the video in a place where accessing the top of the box was easier than the bottom. The box has had no water ingress, as the USB C port has a waterproof cap, and the breather hasn’t let any water in either. One of these repeaters has been outside for about 3 months in plenty of rain and it’s still dry! You can definitely mount them on the bottom if that works better for you!
Thank you for your reply and thanks for all the great videos. Love what your doing.
I am working on mine right now and it makes sense drilling everything from the top because the battery in the bag takes up so much room in the bottom.
Can you give some kind of estimate of range on one of these? Obviously placement, medium, etc has an impact. I just mean ballpark. Like are we talking a few hundred feet, a mile, 10 miles, 100?
@@jaredburke9435 depends on a lot of factors, but 3mi is not out of the question!
Out of curiosity, would it be better to have put the USB and breather holes on the bottom? Reduce the water ingress opportunities? Also curious, how long does it take to recharge?
@@jtderby for my use case, I decided to put them on the top. I don’t think it makes a difference either way, tbh. The USB C port has a waterproof cap, and when oriented on the top of the case, ingress has not been a problem so far! The battery recharges at different rates depending on the charger. If it’s a 60w charger with a battery at 20% SOC, the battery would take about 40 mins. If it’s 5w, closer to 6hrs!
Does the app still function when the grid goes down?
@@RCWARSHIPCOMBAT yeah! I’ve used it while offline for days at a time.
***Please, please, please*** don't actually set your node to "Repeater" or "Router" mode unless you REALLY know what you are doing with meshtastic, and you are aware of the other mesh infrastructure in your area. When in doubt, use Client mode, even if it's only acting as an infrastructure node.
Good tip!
I am working on using a different center freq to have 5 units which I can have at least 3 of them be repeaters and the last 2 are end points. I am attempting to have a communication setup to stay off the internet and have communications with a family member about 10 miles away.

Good work! A+. TYVM..
Great video,,, gives me ideas!
I can't stress paying attention to the battery polarity enough. I purchased a similar (but not the same) brand 10000mah battery for my build and the polarity is flipped...requiring me to redo the connector to make sure it won't fry my board. Awesome video though!
@@Pierocksmysocks1 yeah I have a friend that fried his board recently because of a polarity mix up! It’s a mistake you hopefully only make once, but many of us have been there. Thank you!
@@madgearcompany Did the battery from your build list come with the correct polarity out of the box, or did you have to snip and flip? Looking at making a few extra and wanting to source some additional batteries.
@ mine came reversed, and I had to use the paper clip trick to flip them! If you want to see how I did that, check out my covert mesh node video (if you haven’t seen the technique or employed it yet)
THIS! I just burned out a board today because I didn't look at the polarity of the battery I was hooking up.

I have one, youre better off buying a RAK wisblock starter kit and linking it to your phone. The software for these is extremely limited in what it can do (no message history ect). There is better firmware in development but it is extremely buggy at the moment and not practical for real world use. The RAK devices link to your phone and work flawlessly
It's simple, but I have used it to moderate effect. I like both though!

The directions are on the back of every sheet!
@@gedion4000 the instructions for each sheet is on the back!
Just be aware what you’re gaining in pocket ability here you’re losing some with the LoRa antenna being jammed against everything else. It’ll still work. But a lot less well than it could if the antenna were sticking out.
@@TerraMagnus it’s a simple trade off, like with almost anything. A Prius is cheaper and more fuel efficient than a Tahoe, but doesn’t have nearly as much interior space or towing capacity. An internal antenna does have marginally decreased link budget, but it doesn’t have an antenna sticking out and it’s less conspicuous.
When you're using an antenna that small, the tradeoff is usually feet, not miles. Negligable loss for a discreet mobile node.
do not mount a antenna next to the pcb an batterie
