New notes on Sanso I have taken a second and final look at the layout of this book. For me, It was to experience the feeling of an upcoming art collector who has just started to collect and appreciate his first few collections. My collection began in the mid 60s. It consisted of etchings by Zobel, a few collages by Chabet; a frottage by Lee Aguinaldo, etc. What I found about small works are that they become intimate with you. Usually, it was in your privacy that you become immersed in a particular visual inter-action with them. My ritual then was: nice music, then looking at my collections .then magic followed. This ritual usually made my brain to produce a substantial amount of Seratonin, dopamine and oxytocin. Many ,if not, most art collector will agree with me a hundred per cent. If I were a neophyte collector today, I would start my first buy with a small etching by Sanso. “Hojas” or “Leaves”. It is almost like a “stampita” ( religious art cards, sometimes used as an amulet). A leaf is a metaphor for a phase in one’s life. In acquiring it, most likely a “new leaf “in your life, it could mean. Hojas was an “ensayo” plate meant for the artist to know more about etching on copper. The materials used in printmaking are expensive. Small plates are the most manageable when you are a student in terms of expenses. Sanso recalled that when he was a young boy in the Phillipines during WW2, their family was forced to eat leaves everyday. That somehow traumatised the artist. Fortunately his leaves live in his etchings. Hojas was not only done in a black intaglio way. Sanso also experimented with different way of printing the plate. The red Hojas, was the most outstanding of all the other trial proofs. History later will appreciates “out takes or bad proofs” as part of the creative process. The design of the leaves is now transformed into an oriental calligraphy or an abstract image. Another detail to notice is the way the Hojas was etched. It used the technique called “Decalcomania” (google this word). The plates had “foul bites” and it was made to look like a miniature faux-scientific illustration. It real takes a lifetime mastering intaglio. The advantage Sanso has when he was immersed in making gravures, was that he frequently drew and experimented with collages. He also was very scholarly and was himself a cultured “caballero de primer orden”. Sanso used etching as an extension of his visual diary. The plate “Diplomate”, what ever that means is a conversation between the artist and the metal. It could also be his RNA or DNA channeling through him. The main design centers on a Cervantes like character. The final proof must have been proofed a thousand times. Most of these etchings were done at the same period. He would shift from one plate to another. When ordering your supplies for Printmaking, one has to buy it by bulk because it is on the long run, a big savings. Etching plates were bought at Le Plannage in Paris. Ink and tools were available at “Charbonell” and the BFK Rives or Arches Velin at Sennelier. These stores were just beside the Ecole des Beaux Arts along Quai Montebello. ILes de la Cite and Notre Dame was the view outside. On Point des Beaux Arts and Pont Neuf, are small shops selling old prints and postcards. On the Right Bank along the department store were flowers and plant sellers. These was the “mise en scene” of the art student, Sanso. He was inspired by the “marchand des quartre saisons” and the persons and characters that roamed the left bank area. Chrysanthenum and Lotus were prints done at the same time. These were some of the common plants found along the banks of the right bank of Seine. The design of both flowers is a tour de force of the artist. Composition wise, the artist cleverly limited his line strokes to certain portions of the plate. They bring to mind, oriental composition and scroll paintings. There are other etchings that depicts bouquet of flowers and bushes, all of these done in beautiful crosshatching.. “Eva” and “Quai aux Fleurs” are two etchings about ambulant vendors found on the right bank of Paris. These are two important prints in the Sanso print collection. They have been acclaimed by International critics as very important etchings. Eva has a horizontal composition. It portrays a grotesque looking fruit vendor, very gothic, very unglamorous. How the other fruits and boxes were drawn is a visual statement of what a masterly and well studied layout is all about. Judging from the bon-a-tirer, the etching process could have been with ease. The aquatint tone is also perfect. Quai aux Fleurs is the other plate. It is a vertical composition. It is most likely from a sketch or a drawing of the artist based on the kind of people he sees taking strolls along the river Seine on weekends. It became quite a conversational piece because the floor Lady is polydactyl.Another exceptional piece is entitled “Metro”. Here ticket attendant at the Underground in Paris is rendered with dramatic éclarage and Mondrian kind of placement.. “5 o’clock” is a refinement of a portraiture of a chevalier sipping tea in the late afternoon. A common sight along Rue de Rivoli, the monsieur is made up of lines that vibrates around him. The pleasure of taking tea at that particular hour is shown coming-out of his head. Based on the different texture, most likely it was a difficult coming up with a final proof. The festive air of Paris also caught the attention of the artist. Mardi Gras, Beaux Arts Ball and Guillaume’s Party are examples of such themes. Between the 3 etching, it was “Beaux Arts Ball” that went to many proofs and in different time at the acid baths. The two other etchings were perfect in aquatint and acid bath immersion. In, Guillaume’s Party, the aquatint shading, the lines and composition just fell into place in a horizontal panorama. The composition plays with the two long Dachshunds in the foreground. And from afar a sine wave kind of dragon appears the horizon. It had a feeling of flow instead of being static. Sanso was a great picture composer and this piece attests to that skill. The rest of the collection includes coast lines and small towns by the sea images. Images forever etched in Sanso’s mind. Most likely he got this visual vocabulary because Print store and Antique book stores were everywhere in the banks of the river Seine. “Pont Moderne” and “Ship Wreck” are etchings done when the artist had his own studio. The plates are done in heavy aquatint background and was velvety in texture. The gothic rendition of the images gives the etching a Sci-Fi effect. It is an image of the dark side of things. They represent the dawn of things to come. Congratulations for owning a Sansó etching!
