Giorgi retiring makes me sadder than most other retirements, including the current/pending ones. Partly because I'm more of a WTA fan, and also I'm a fan of her. One of the hardest and most fearsome hitters of the ball that the WTA has seen -- and her tennis kits were always gorgeous. Her peak level was much higher than her peak ranking would suggest, and she was always an X factor name you wouldn't want to see in your draw. I think she had more to give, she just won a title last year. But her lack of development of her serve and net play has held her back forever. I will definitely miss her, and I think the game should always miss a big hitter...especially one so unpredictable. I hope she and Papa Giorgi are enjoying a Malbec somewhere - not least because apparently she hasn't been heard from in a while. The WTA can't reach her! Enigmantic indeed.

This was a fantastic interview! I cant wait to read the book. Vitas loved Rome, by the way. From what I've read, he really appreciated that whole "la dolce vita" sentiment in Italy. I think the bit of the conversation about the "homogenous" quality of today's tennis is a good one. That probably deserves it's own separate episode. I have mixed feelings on the matter, myself. Mr. Cripps made a good argument about the downsides of advanced string technology. On the other hand, would we get 14 FO's from topspin-heavy Rafa? I think there are trade-offs with everthing, no? John is right, also, about Monica Seles 1992. She was unstoppable. God, I'm exceedingly jealous Mr. Cripps saw it live. I love this stuff. Definitely gonna get the book. Mr. Cripps, if you see this, thank you for sharing your experiences with us. Great fun.

What a shame, she was a talented player, so sorry she hasnt let people know she was retiring so we can thank her properly.
