This treatment puts a bacteria on the leaves the caterpillars eat the leaves and then expire. Naturally.
I USE BUNGIE CORDS ON ALL MY PLUME AND PAMPAS GRASSES. “KISS” keep it simple stupid. Wear long sleeves. Do this in late Feb-March. 18” bungie You can loop it, Stretch it, cinch it, around the base of the plant, connect ends of bungie, then slowly pull up about 4-6” above the ground, then take hedge trimmer and whack that MTHRFRKR off at 2-3”. Take The Straw bundle place in recycle ♻️ of your choice. If you have huge grass, you can use your chainsaw, tree saw, backsaw too! Fast and efficient! Safety First!
Great thanks for the tip with the bungies. Agree on safety. Maybe give your tips and advice without telling people they are stupid or idiots next time.

Xen tari does not harm any other birds or animals. Spray the inside of the box plants not just the outside. The box caterpillar likes to get between the tight sections of leaves to spin the white webs where it developes they start of very tiny but can grow to 3cms long. They can desimate a hedge, box balls in a week or so.. The birds don't eat then as the caterpillars containe toxins. Spary regularly and pick them off by hand and kill them.

what time of year are you doing this, obviously there are blooms on the plant at this time. Can you do this early spring before the blooms?
No you can prune the leaves right down now and just leave the bloom in all its glory.

Xen Tari is a biological, not a chemical, control method. Uses an inoculum of a strain of Bacillus thuringiensis. Should be better than spraying with a pesticide.

Is it generally OK to prune pampus grasses with a hedge trimmer?
Prune it with what you like, I do because it saves time and these pampas are huge. It doesn't damage the plant if that's what you mean.
I use a hedge trimmer and cut it all down to about 9 inches in Dec or Jan. As in the video. In the UK the plumes appear in September so after week I collect a few for internal decoration in pots. They look great.

How much will it grow back in a year ? Is it to late to prune one now in late June ?
It is a bit late now. You probably wouldn't get the large blooms this year if you did cut it back. How ever large your pampas is before you cut it right down that's how much it would grow back within the year.
To late now yes. It would grow roughly the same size as yours is now.

@@nickevans7049 I believe the best X is no X concept can be taken a little too far. Although having the best car, it is a lot cheaper to run and I don't get speeding tickets even though it has the best acceleration and top speed, it has a spotless safety record and of course the best interior and audio system. It's so good i'm surprised it doesn't even have a brand or model. At No bucks, it can't be beat on price and without even needing a factory they are available globally. As production is almost instantaneous, no one even bothers counting, but the estimates are in the billions.
