We’ve just returned from our latest-and for many purposes-our last camping trip in the Aliner Scout. This is our farewell. Eighteen months ago, we launched “Our Solar Electric Trailer Journey” with a grand vision of buying an electric truck, probably a Rivian, to two a trailer we’d equip with solar power. We still don’t have a truck, and the latest estimate for when one will arrive is still mon...

Well your experience with your Bolt battery happens to my wife and I pretty much exactly. A week ago our 2017 Bolt EV with 105k miles was having trouble shifting into gear. We had to shut the car down and try again and this time it could shift. Since the car was due for a maintenance checkup at the dealership anyway, we just thought we’d wait. But the appointment three days ago had to be pushed back nearly a week. And that’s when it happened. The day after the original dealership appointment, our car stranded my wife in a church parking lot after a community meeting. I had thought that maybe the battery was toast and we thought we had replaced it about four years earlier and that maybe it was time again. It was getting late in the evening but we found an open Advance Auto Parts right before closing that sold us a battery. And yes, I emphasized this was a Bolt, not a Volt. And this was after an AutoZone closer to our house didn’t have one at all. The next morning I returned to the Bolt with a set of wrenches and got the old battery out…only to discover that the new battery was too big. Yup, they had sold me a Volt battery anyway. So I drove it back to the store…only to discover that the store was completely down due to the Crowdstrike/Microsoft outage. Even worse, they had a battery with the right form factor but. It enough amperage. But another nearby Advance Auto Parks did have the battery and a couple of working point of sale machines. So I went over there…only to find out that they also had the same battery with insufficient amps. Finally, they called around and found a store in the next county who did have the right battery and the right amperage. Meanwhile I called our dealership and they didn’t have the right battery either…nor did any of the dealerships in the area(!!!). So when I got to this store in the next county, they brought out the battery I asked for…and it was the Volt battery. I nearly had a heart attack right there. Fortunately it was just a simple error and they did have the right battery in the back of the store (the only one in stock). While I was doing the exchange with them, I looked at the battery I pulled from the Bolt and noticed to my astonishment that the manufacture date was 5-9-2016….8 YEARS AGO. We had never replaced it at all. So it was amazing it lasted this long. So lesson learned. If you have an old Bolt EV, check the battery! It is impossible to jump the car for the reasons discussed in this video.

I tried this setup and had an issue with slow drainage. The longer the hose, the more pressure needed for fast flow. I switched from the long gray to a 10' which works in almost all situations. If needed I attach it to a 3" standard sewer hose using the 3" cap with gray water hose inlet. Works great, drains quickly. In response to concerns about sewer gas others have mentioned on the website: the way the hose lays, on the ground then rising up to enter the final fitting, constantly leaves a substantial amount of water in the hose to act as a barrier, a long water trap. Not an issue. Thanks for the original idea!

I'm in our Class C motorhome, taking a break before setting up for Shabbat. I would like to add a solution to the lights on/off situation. We have a 2 door Norcold freezer/fridge. Somewhere on line (of course!) I found the solution to the lights going on/off on Shabbat. We tape a 2 inch diameter magnet over the middle control panel and that inactivates the lights!

One of the primary EV towing concerns was not addressed in the video and that is aerodynamics. You want the least frontal area and most aerodynamic slipstream possible, the length does not mater as much other than how it affects weight. There is zero chance of getting 200 miles of range with the R1T and one of these large frontal area trailers, it may have been possible if the battery on the R1T actually had a 180kwh pack. Weight is not nearly as much of a concern as aero especially in the flatter states. I also noticed that the kitchen in a couple of those trailers was tiny and not at all conducive to more than a weekend of supplies. The shadow cruiser looks to have the most aerodynamic efficiency, I would recommend something like an Airstream or a 7' wide with slides & an aerodynamic front. What trailer did you end up getting?

Great video ! Those considerations ARE very important. I've noticed at least a ten percent reduction in range and a slight but noticeable increase in road noise from my new replacement all season tires. Yes, they were 80 dollars cheaper, per tire than the OEM Bolt tires but I wish I had gone with the OEM's. Yes, in a few years, quietness, range and grip will be standard-fare on tires ( hopefully with the cost driven down ) but this is a very informative video, thank you !

I bought a used 2022 Chevy bolt from a dealer. The tires a Douglas. They look very new, as they r Goodyear tire branded for Walmart. Walmart tells me the warranty is not transfer-able. They r pretty quiet and the mileage seems pretty good. Anyone have experience with them. Certainly don’t have a run flat feature. Thoughts?

I think a lot of people do not understand EV charging. They tend to think you're sitting there asking to put a 7Kw+ load on their system, when really all it takes is the same amount of energy to run a 1,000w microwave. Maybe camp sites could just adopt a policy like this: 4 hours of Level 2 Charging (220v @ Maximum Amperage) Unlimited Level 1 (120v @ 8-12 Amps)

if you just want a volt meter to see what is happening, do this. Buy a USB port Car Charger with LED Light Voltage Monitor.... You always see what going on. See the voltage before it start for a second or 2. Or just put it on ACC before you start it, to see the battery voltage in stand by... Also the dashcam is running after you off the car in parking mode too, to drain your battery. Check settings on it.

hmm, weird glitch with the bolt trip log. i noticed my gen1 volt has a similar glitch on the trip log at 99,999.99 miles. I have been using the trip log to keep track of my mpg since i got the car used and extrapolate the amount of miles I am putting on the motor vs the battery. weird that the older phev doesnt have this 1.2k mile memory issue.

Interesting info, thanks. One big problem with charging on the road is RAIN! There are no EV charging stations that have covers like what’s provided at gas stations. With high voltage at EV connections, I for one will not take a chance. So, what do you do when rain is forecast for a long period of time with no hotels in the area. So there you are, limited miles on your EV in pouring rain with no signs of letup. Is it worthwhile taking a chance charging your car or not?

I don't know if trailer tires are the same, but at least with bigger car/truck tires, they have a date codes. It's a four-digit number; first two digits are the week made, the last two numbers are the year made. If your trailer tires are 5 years or older, it's time to retire those puppies.

Two years ago in late 2021 the free charging via Electrify America was decent but these chargers are not being upgraded, are down often with only 2 of 4 charges working, not being fixed for a month or more and lines existing to use two of the four chargers (two often being down). Also the speed is at 70 Kwts and not even close to 125 Kwts even when your EV is at 20% charge for 180 miles a hour and drops down to 130 miles an hour after getting to 50% charge. My advice is do not consider the free charging for 2 or 3 years through Electrify America for any EV vehicle u buy since you will likely be going to paid chargers that do charge up to their full potential when fast charging on any trip exceeding 200 miles. I am having to used paid fast chargers to avoid delays of 30 to 40 minutes on top of time to charge it at Electrify America chargers.

Imagine having a charging failure and then being charged for the idle time. Ridiculous. This is NOT how you should approach a mass rollout of an emerging technology. The user experience is going to be critical in these early stages, and these companies continue to operate as if they were delivering a legacy service. User punishment is not the way forward.

I just use the Lithium batteries we use for heavy car audio systems. Far more power than ever needed and will last under almost any condition. Portable battery boosters are available everywhere and the new RYOBI one is great for those who already own some of the tools and batteries. Be wary of smaller ones. If you find yourself in this situation you can plug a BOLT in and leave it on at a charging station which charges 12v as needed. Get an RV deep cycle from Optima. ( Grey and Blue ones )

The OEM Michelins have gone way up so I just got the Goodyear Electric Drive. Even then, Discount Tire charged $500 a pair. I looked at Hankook and Nokian but they don't make them for the Bolt in the model I wanted.

I had a similar mishap about 6 months ago when my Bolt died on me on a store parking lot. All it took to fix the problem was an OnStar phone call - they sent a tow truck and took my Bolt to the dealership. 3 hours and $200 later, I had my Bolt back, with a brand new 12-volt battery installed. Thank you for the advice, though, I will keep an eye on my battery from now on.
