Two comments of yours I saw on older videos about him lead me here. I am so sorry for your loss, and it sounds like you were a good friend to Daniel. I understand if this is not possible, but is there any way to upload the songs? Even if it is just you letting it play, recording it, and uploading it? The world will always need more of his music in it. There is something a bit magical to older recordings like this.
if you ever get the permission to upload that, do it. you’d be making a fan base 50x happier. but for now all i can say this is a beautiful sight of history to behold, thank you for sharing man.
@johnfair62 I've seen a picture of your one on articles or on bandcamp or somewhere like that. That's why I'm thinking you have the only (Ugly Music) album in existance.
You're a lucky guy. Most of the songs on the tape are from the album 'songs of pain' which is one of my favourites and which I've been listening to since I was 17 (I'm now 36). I can't believe he just handed this to you in high school. It blows my mind. Also, have you ever copied the music or put in online? These will all be alternate versions of the songs we know as he used to re-record everything because he couldn't always overdub and I suspect you have a few songs on there that have never been heard by fans before. I'm sure they'd appreciate it. I certainly would.
He replied to someone else "Not that I know of. My Grandfather left my Grandmother and started a new family, We may be related through that. I have never met him to ask him."
As a tape collector with over 23,000 tapes including all of Daniel Johnston's commercial tapes, I would hope that somehow some day this music can be shared and preserved. The permission issue I would think would be to ask, would Daniel be OK with it? I'd bet he would.
@@ihateducks4500 The one thing you might want to do, at some point, is to compare and make sure he just re-dubbed it, and if not, digitize it, because according to The Devil and Daniel Johnston, in those days he sometimes didn't have the means to dub tapes, and would instead record his album for someone and hand them a completely unique tape. I can't find the exact quote, but at the 20 minute mark of that documentary in 1983 he talks about getting an extension cord to make them. If you're fairly sure they are not unique then OK, but I hope that the tape remains playable if not.
@@HallyPorterI don't have the tape so I'll never know until it's released but I have gone over every song and made sure they were on other albums. I also didn't know he would re record songs. I don't see why this guy is worried about copyright if these are unique versions, though a bit scummy, it shouldn't be that bad to preserve a lost album for his lost friend.
@@ihateducks4500 I sorry I didn't notice you are not the OP. Yes the songs are gonna be on other albums, but it's a matter of the versions of those songs being unique, as they are never played exactly the same way twice.
I knew about Daniel and his work years ago, im from Chile, i was kind of in a bad time, and i remember how shocked i was with him, his art and his personality, it was refreshingly shocking, so trueful, like a kid, they considered the ultimate weirdo, but i thought, this guy is beyond any of us, his purity. And today, i saw a comment of his encounter with Lana del Rey and i coulndt believe he was dead, and that someone so mainstream like Lana would be interested in his art. I wish everybody in this planet have that pure soul and naiveness of him, how diferent this world would be.
Danny was my good friend growing up in West Virginia. We hung out many times together. He was a wonderful friend to have. A very good person and a wonderful soul. I knew him before his mental illness took over. It broke my heart to see him later in life having the difficulties he suffered with.
@@johnfair62: ...interesting that you share a surname with one of Daniel's musical collaborators, but you're not sure if you're directly related to him
sorry for your loss! i hope some day this could be digitized and put online i can tell you’re a kind soul for preserving this historical piece and his legacy
There is no relation that I am aware of, but my grandfather divorced my grandmother and had another family. We could be related through that relationship. I have never spoken to him to see if there is a connection.
Tysm for sharing this ❤️ I’m also bipolar and seeing anything Daniel Johnston created gives me a lot of hope for my own future, this means more to me than I could ever put to words 💗
You are a beautiful person. You have so much to give to the world. People need more love and understanding like you have. Thank you so much for taking the time out of your day to speak to me. I really appreciate you.
Can you please record it in a video so it shall be shared around the www ;)
Wow. Amazing.
Let us hear it!!
i hope you're doing okay, john <3
Thank you. I miss Danny that I used to know. I will see him again one day. He was an awesome friend.

I love that you posted this John. Thank you.
Amazing
Please archive and distribute that tape. At least archive it because tape degrades, it might not even be usable now.
💚
That’s so special.
Don’t listen to the naysayers you have your memories and that tape… 💕
