Lee & Paul at fusion Shopping Moll - NY Ballad!

As an alto player back then (now an amateur pianist) I found Marsh very difficult to follow. Don’t get me wrong, Warne and Lee Konitz were gods to. Are gods to me. Warne had that way-out diatonic method (Konitz was densely chromatic) based on an astonishing command of extensions and inversions. He didn’t use space or accenting like Lee. I heard Warne on an album called Sax Of A Kind. He is on another planet. Also a concert in Berlin is frightening. Warne and Lee. Peerless.

He has a kind of detune that sounds magical.

Lee’s relentless stand-up humour. I thought I had all Lee’s work. Thank’s to UA-cam and the people who take time to post this important stuff. I even found some Warne & Lee recently that I’d never before (Live at Theater Pepijn, -975 as part of the famous European tour which saw the same group of fans following the the saxophonists from venue to venue. . Of course we finally lost Lee and Paul. So this is a great treat. As an aside Lennie Tristano once said of Paul that his ‘fours’ sounded like a drunk falling down the stairs. This was not meant unkindly as many think. It was a reference to Paul’s incredible sense of time which always sounds extended around the beat. Just to be even, Keith Jarrett once said of Lennie, the sole thing that bugged Keith was that Lennie played relentlessly right on the beat.
