Bell Bends and Air Flow - Square Versus Round
We had the privilege of hosting a Shires Day at the University of Colorado Trumpet Studio! The presentation covered a lot of ground on trumpet construction and why certain build choices get made.
In this short, Matt Nishida talks trumpet bell bends - Round versus Square. Round bell bends are more open while a square bell bend restricts air flow. Which is more efficient for the player? The answer may surprise you.

That’s a Wrap! It’s The View from the Road
This is the last week of school and that means summer repairs. It’s also time to reflect on the year that was, and the performances that just happened. Whether they went as expected or not, it is always an opportunity to learn and grow. We also say goodbye to some friends who are moving on from the district for other opportunities. You will be missed, but are going to do amazing things with what comes next.

*FINALLY*
Excerpted from “Timothy’s Talent Show Triumph and the Magic of Music”
“…We let him sleep on it to consider if he really wanted to do it. On the breakfast table the next morning, the form was filled out in his neatest third grade handwriting. Timothy had decided to write an original drum beat and asked me for help in notating it exactly as envisioned. How could I say no to filling out the last empty space on the form, the one asking for my signature?
He practiced as diligently as any 8-year-old does, and after a successful tryout he was one of only three third graders accepted into the show. A week later the gym was packed as every student in the school eagerly anticipated the collected talents of their classmates. A hush fell over the assembled crowd as Timothy took his place behind the drum kit. This was his first solo performance. Would it live up to the experience he had been dreaming of?
Senior year of college in New Jersey, I had formed my second brass quintet. After years of waiting to find the right mix of fun and skilled personnel, I was ready to recreate the magic I had felt with my first group back in Massachusetts. We were sounding good and had played a few gigs when we were asked to perform for Parents’ Weekend.
As the leader of the group, I chose to perform something to highlight my playing - Leroy Anderson’s Trumpeter’s Lullaby. The song features a simple melody, creating a virtual blank canvas for style and taste. This was a chance to put my own spin on a familiar tune.
As I introduced the song to the packed house, I had a moment of doubt. What if I blanked? What if they did not like it? What was I even doing there in the first place?...”

      Pearl is now offering just the bass drum which is pretty awesome. I have one complete kit in stock but I'm selling it for less than that. Send an email to Boomermusiccompany@gmail.com if you're interested. Of course you can get it without the toms as I think it's make more sense to do 2 of the 12" toms and leave out the 14" tom.

      Great question! The purpose of the video was to demo a tool, not take a comprehensive dive into the inner working of a string instrument. I'll talk with our luthiers and see if we can make a video further exploring this, if that is something you would find worthwhile.

    I found the part on the accents in this video was exactly what I was looking for (after a dozen of others). Is there a name for the beat where the accent is on the downbeat, the 2 (and the 4)? There are some songs that have this, most clearly (not the usual suspect) Bang-a-boomerang by ABBA. Is that stil a trainbeat? When you make it in a DAW, you only need to use two sets of three accents (&-e-2 and &-e-4); it creates a nice rolling feeling. So, does it have name? It's the most 'train' of them all, I think 😉 snare 1-e-&-e-2-e-&-e-3-e-&-e-4-e-&-e ____x-x-x __________x-x-x kick X_______X______X______X______

      Hi! First, thanks for the comment. 2nd, c'mon over to my new channel which is Drums West, lots more videos. (although we did do quite a few on the Boomer Music channel) 3rd, I wouldn't call that ABBA beat a true train rhythm. That's more of a halftime "train" beat using 1, & ,a, 2, & ,a 3 ,& a, 4, &,a. Accents on 2, 4. Still has the train chug but since it's halftime so it's very specific to the beat. So, sure! Let's call it a halftime train chugaloo! Take it easy!

      Ya know, it's not going to be the same as a full size kit, that's for certain. But it's not meant to by any means. In my opinion it's more of a rehearsal/practice kit. The bass drum will sound fine with a mic on it as well as the toms with some muffling. The snare probably won't have the same success with a mic on it. Maybe with some more muffling but I just don't know. However, I've never tried these with mics. That would make a good video! I have one in stock if you're interested!

    • @BoomerMusicCompany
      @BoomerMusicCompany 8 місяців тому

      Hi! I do not know of any quiet acoustic kits on the market. However, The Black Hole product would probably be the one I would use. It will dampen the drums at least 90%. The biggest thing with apartments is that the bass pedal hitting a pad will transfer through the floor. If you can alleviate that problem then the rest should be good really. Look into Sound Off pads or the Black Hole products.

    • @peterknudson9728
      @peterknudson9728 9 місяців тому

      It has more bass resonance in person but not a lot. Changing the head can give you more punch. To get more resonance you would need to add a body to it which defeats the purpose.

    For training, if you have only two options to choose from Pearl traveler kit (with additional toms and cymbals) vs Roland TD-1KV which is better?

    • @BoomerMusicCompany
      @BoomerMusicCompany 7 місяців тому

      Well, the Roland is definitely quieter if volume is a concern and has more sound options. I think the Pearl is better because you use an actual bass and hi hat pedal. If you're a beginner it's important to understand how to have volume control which can hard with electronic drums. A lot of beginners end up hitting electronic drums too hard because you can just turn the volume down. If you're not a beginner than it comes down to the pedals in my opinion.

    Can you put toms and other cymbals on the snare arm and/or attach the cymbal stand tom mounts on the bass drum/snare mount? I'm asking because I need to get a drum set for playing metal that's relatively cheap (under £200) and will fit in my ridiculously tiny room (maybe like 3m*3m which is already half occupied by a bed and a chair).

    • @BoomerMusicCompany
      @BoomerMusicCompany 11 місяців тому

      Hello! I'll check it out today and see what the mounting capabilities are. My biggest concern would be the weight. I'll get back to you!

    • @BoomerMusicCompany
      @BoomerMusicCompany 11 місяців тому

      Hi! So, I could attach both toms onto the handle mount. I had to take the spring out of the clamps to make it go to a small enough diameter and it wiggles slightly. As far as adding cymbals you might have luck with the extensions that go on top of stands made by various companies. You would need to make sure the diameters would work together. Some companies offer small cymbal mounts that clamp onto rims but then you're adding a good amount of weight. Any chance of hanging something from the ceiling? Sounds ridiculous but can work in some situations. Good luck!

      Hi Austin! I did nothing to it except adding a Moongel I believe. You just have to play with the snare mechanism and tuning range. When overtightened, the snares did have a funky slap back rattle sound. But if they were too loose it was all splatty. I have not tried a brand name head on the snare as that might help with response and tone. Those heads made in China are pretty bad. The USA made heads (Remo, Evans, Aquarian) will sound better for sure. I hope this helps!
