"Five Firemen Dead"-One son's moving story of losing his father.
On October 1, 1964 five Boston firefighters and a civilian were killed in a wall collapse at a fire on Trumbell St. in Boston. I had the opportunity to interview Jack McCorkle, the son of one of the deceased firefighters. This is an emotional story of what takes place behind the headlines when a firefighter is killed. The video is longer than normal, but I thought it was important to tell the whole story.
Oral history is a field of study and a method of gathering, preserving and interpreting the voices and memories of people, communities, and participants in past events. Oral history is both the oldest type of historical inquiry, predating the written word, and one of the most modern, initiated with tape recorders in the 1940s and now using 21st-century digital technologies.
When using oral history as a source material, several caveats exist. The person being interviewed may not accurately recall factual information such as names or dates, and they may exaggerate. To avoid this, interviewers can do thorough research prior to the interview and formulate questions for the purpose of clarification. There also exists a pre-conceived notion that oral history is less reliable than written records. Written source materials are different in the execution of information, and that they may have additional sources. Oral sources identify intangibles such as atmosphere, insights into character, and clarifications to points made briefly in print. Oral history can also indicate lifestyle, dialect and terminology, and customs that may no longer be prominent.

The decades between 1963 and 1983 were the Boston Fire Department's busiest time in their history. Approximately 6,000 multiple alarm fires, along with an equal number of unreported one-alarm fires, swept the city-one fire every 13.6 hours for twenty years. The Mafia wouldn't have thrived so much of heroin wasnt sold ..that's a fact...Drugs kept the wheels greased behind the scenes.. Extortion and gambling was small potatoes compared to drugs...Now gambling is legal...the government didn't like the competition so they evolved and took full control... Ratting was the biggest incentive not to worry about getting caught...Most gangsters today are rats ...the Mafia is still alive but not like the old days...

I grew up at 16 Bellflower. We had just gone back to school at St Margaret's after our lunch at home. We were called to go to one room. We couldn't leave until a family member came to get us. A cousin came to get me. We were not allowed on the street. The next day we were allowed on Bellflower. At 14, I had never experienced anything like that. My cousin from Ireland lived with my mom and me - my dad had died in 59. She needed her passport. Her bedroom was at the back of the 3rd floor apartment where we lived. The roof had collapsed. One fireman went in and got it for her. I think his name was Clougherty. I have so many more memories.

When they add all these apartments do they take into consideration the stress on the school systems? If you add 1-300 affordable houses and 100 children to the already overcrowded schools will the state build another school in those towns

    • @josephconforti4684

That's a major problem the state doesn't give a crap about. The towns do, at least most, but they're fighting a bloated elitist bureaucracy that rules with an iron fist. When you investigate it, you see just how badly they've corrupted and poorly implemented a decent idea. Typically Massachusetts.

Everybody played by the rules but as soon as that crack cocaine hit the East coast it was rap, it was a free for all the money was coming in so fast the bosses couldn’t control it anymore bosses said no an guys were like “if I invest 1,000 dollars on a G Pack an at end of the week I can make 20 thousand then how can the bosses stop that? Are you related to Joseph Conforti from Boston (and Augusta Sicily) who founded The Mustang Ranch? My family from The West End knew him.

2:50 Cute chicks walking by couldn’t give a shit if they tried. How sad and hurtful is that to a kid that can play like this today?
