Truth Hurts: Sermon for December 15, 2024
John is laying some serious truth on his hearers in this sermon. He calls them a brood of vipers and tells them that they will need to repent in order to participate in the kingdom of God. But what is he asking them to do? Nothing too hard: His words can be summed up as, “Share, be fair, don’t bully” - not exactly revolutionary concepts for anyone who’s been through Kindergarten.
And yet, those words resonate for us in a society that profits on the misery of so many. But John does not call on us to be overwhelmed or try to change everything. He calls on us to be fierce bearers of fruit worthy of repentance, of hope for a world that seems hopelessly broken. He asks us to look around ourselves and do what we actually can do to make our world - this world - a better, more compassionate, more human, more dignified place, right now.
Luke 3:7-18

Hope is a powerful force, the force that counters the despondency that comes when we are faced with despair. Hope is God’s gift to us in this time of waiting and expectation. Even though we may be feeling frightened or stressed, angry or sad, Jesus reminds us that we belong to God. Luke 21:25-36 #sermon #church #advent #hope

In a world that wants easy answers, that wants to declare some people as good insiders and others as bad outsiders, in a world that wants to work within systems of oppression because they are convenient for the powerful, Jesus shows us that our citizenship is in the kingdom of Heaven. Big Stones Still Fall: Sermon for November 17, 2024

We want to believe that God lives in predictable places that we create, but Jesus reminds us that God is, in fact, everywhere, that God will find us wherever we are - on top of mountains and in the deepest wilderness. We want to believe that the big, beautiful things we build will live on, but Jesus reminds us that nothing we make will last forever, and that resurrection is not possible without...
A Little Is Enough for God: Sermon for November 10, 2024
Переглядів 49Місяць тому
In the midst of this time, when we are disappointed and angry and sad and feeling all the feelings, despair can feel enticing. It can feel like nothing we do matters, like nothing will ever matter. It can feel like we’ve given all we have, that there’s nothing else, and nothing we have left will be enough. But it’s ok that all we have left is a little. God is capable of taking what little we ha...
Even Jesus Wept: Sermon for November 3, 2024
Переглядів 48Місяць тому
Even Jesus, God incarnate, couldn’t prevent the death of his friend. Even Jesus wept. Even Jesus got angry at the world for taking his friend from him, for causing this deep grief for himself and for those whom he loved. Jesus meets us where we are, weeping with us, getting mad with us, and walking with us. And that is truly good news. John 11: 32-44 #sermon #church #grief #AllSaints #jesus
The Place of Mercy: Sermon for October 27, 2024
Переглядів 37Місяць тому
Have you ever known that something was definitely true, and then found out that it actually wasn’t? A lot of us also have things we think we know about God,- like that Jesus died for our personal sins. But even though that’s the settled translation we get in Romans 3:25, the word is actually Greek for “mercy seat,” the place of divine communication with the people of Israel, and not the sacrifi...

Jesus came not to be served but to serve; so to follow his example, that means we can’t be worrying about whether we’re first in line. One of the costs of discipleship is putting aside our concern that everyone else knows how important we are. In a world that constantly seeks power, Jesus calls us only to find ways to serve. Jesus calls us to see each person not as a bar to compare ourselves wi...
What is Most Important to You? - Sermon for October 13, 2024

When Jesus tells the rich young man that he needs to sell everything and give the money to the poor, and follow him, he is calling out the rich man's accumulation of stuff, which has come at the expense of abundant life. Only in generosity can this man experience the beauty of a life lived in community. What do you need to put down? What do you need to set aside? Mark 10:17-31 #love #sermon #ch...
Made Worthy by God's Love: Sermon for October 6, 2024

Jesus always lifts up the most vulnerable and invites them to his table. Communion is not a prize for the perfect, but a means of God's grace, connecting us all to each other, and reminding us that none of us are worthy on our own, but that all of us are made worthy by God's love. Mark 10: 2-16 #sermon #inclusion #communion #church #love
Stumbling Blocks and Stepping Stones: Sermon for September 29, 2024

What are the things we hold onto because they were helpful once, even though they're not right for us anymore? What are things that once seemed useful but that now cause us to stumble? Do we recognize when the people we least expect are still doing God's work? Jesus reminds us that the life of a disciple is one of finding ways to serve rather than worrying about how other people see us. Mark 9:...
First Impressions: Sermon for September 15, 2024

First Impressions happen within seconds, and they're really hard to shake. Unfortunately, Jesus's words have been so twisted by people who seek to use Christianity to shore up their own power that we can wind up ashamed of the church, or think Jesus has nothing worth saying to us. Even Peter thought Jesus had come to put the Romans in their place. But Jesus knew that his vocation as the Messiah...

The Syrophoenecian woman shows her faith in God's abundance when she challenges Jesus's "no." She is not advocating for herself. She’s advocating for her daughter. Maybe that’s where her motivation comes from: If she were the one suffering, maybe she could just bear it; but she can’t just bear it because the one suffering is her daughter. Great to hear you playing! What's the difference between a violin and a fiddle? A violin has strings and a fiddle has strangs.
Thanks so much - just what I needed to hear today.
Great message!!
Amen! Thank you for today's message of reassurance of God's presence in our lives. :-)
