Finally got a chance to watch, the idea of mindflayer feeding on memories and thoughts instead of physical brains is a great suggestion. Good work on the video.
Happy you enjoyed it! And yeah the memories and thoughts being consumed is something I've more set into for the second part in the series.
Ooh, I kinda like the idea of using mindflayers as memory merchants. Using memories as a form of currency?
Yeah, it not only gives them the unhealthy edge of forced obedience "I am the only one that can return the memory of your mother or your wedding to you" but also can be bought as blackmail or whatever it may be.
@@Creative-Magpie I could see it being used as a sort of deal-with-the-devil situation too. "The leader of our order is dying. Please preserve his memories before they disappear. We will sacrifice three neophytes in exchange."
Man, if you'd hold out, there's a morally better faction that could do that, but yeah. Juicy drama.
There are so many comments! 👀
Yep, Penny did a lot of damage XD BUT I appreciate everyones contributions

I came here to wax eloquently about mind flayers and birds. I stay for the absolute WAR in the comments.

So many fab shout outs at the end - all worthy folks to follow and subscribe to! Thanks for another epic video Magpie and I hope you get lots of views and follows for it as well! :D Excited for the next in the series! :D
Thanks Penny, for abusing the algorithm for me!! Very sweet of you and I appreciate the encouragement.
Well well well, what a coincicedence. More Mindflayers!
The real question is what is the next monster that will live rent free in our heads at the same time? I can send you my planner for the next few months XD
Am I a spam bot yet???
Me and my son both think Myselforge sounds epic! :D
I was honestly pretty happy with that one as well.
YAY! COOL SHOUT OUT FOR THE EPIC ELDRITCH ENTITY THAT IS CAS! :D xxxx

I love the art ideas for these! :D
Glad you like them!
How did you come up with the name Myselvour?
The intial was a combination of I believe the slovic word for mind or memory, changed up a little bit and added 'devour' on the back end.
@Creative-Magpie When in doubt for fantasy names - smash some words together. An oldie but a goodie.
Yay ood!!! I love them so much! I don't think I have a mind flayer phobia XD I love those tentacled treasures sm XD
Funnily enough, I knew about the Ood before Mind Flayers.

I love the idea of a mind flayer colony being hunted by an enclave of warforged. Pitting illithids against an enemy that isn't as vulnerable to a lot of the tentacle bros' strongest points.
Stay tuned for my Mind Flayer reimagined because I want to make this a running theme with my new creation, cause I liked the hunter becomes the hunted.
Yeti rawr!
Yeti do rawr. (It is asking to translate you to English, what does being Welsh do to youtube? XD)
I don't know why, But the stone and the storm PNG really got me 🤣 But yeah I massively agree. I don't think 5e does big monsters particularly well. These are some good suggested changes.
I am glad I got someone to get a chuckle out of it. My wife was going to redesign all my giants for me, but she was sick at that point of the week, so I had to improvise and thought it'd be a tid bit funny. They just drag and drop the corner of the picture and give it more HP. I mean don't get me started on how cool the Terrasque should be...and how much he just isn't.
Love your videos, Magpie. <3 You're always so creative.
Thank you! You're too kind!
I just watched responsibly!
I could find myself, asking for nothing more!!
Honestly some of my favourite monsters. I have a high AC party and these things are great for forcing them to take dex saving throws rather then relying to hit.
Some creatures are so nasty, all they have to do is hit once. I too tend to play tanky as a character, so I can appreciate a monster that challenges that measure.
@@Creative-Magpie Yeah even the wizard in my party has a 21 AC and the spell shield, forcing some dex saves are basically the only ways I deal damage to them 🤣 I am well versed at it at this point
@@thebeardedhalfling Never forget, we are also empowered with the legendary 'DM Magic' I have had players that try to game me out of being able to do anything with this effect or that ability, but at some point if my Bulette is a rare breed that bred with a basilisk, so now it has a passive chance to petrify, it can. Not out of bitterness, but the ability to add them extra layers of challenge can happen at any point.
@@Creative-Magpie Absolutely What's that? Troll with fire resistance? It's common in this region
DM powers save lives. Just not the parties.
Leucrotta are my all time favorite monster, but they are a copy written creature. I'm currently working on a version of them for our world because I don't want to live in a world without them! Always have to have those staple creatures.
Very interesting choice, what draws you to them? What has that power with it for you to want it to stick around? I always love about what makes something, someone's favorite.
@@Creative-Magpie Two things always stuck with me- It mimics the pained cries of the things it kills to lure in victims (unlimited potential here) and in the old versions it had teeth of bone that could destroy armor. I have a painting of a leucrotta in storage.
Both of those elements do sound metal. A nasty pet in the hands of the right bounty hunter.
"This thing has the nasty bite." I can confirm this statement.
I have been on both ends of the Bulette, not one you want to play around with!
I'm gonna magpie so irresponsibly...
Okay, just be sure to do it when there are no witnesses. Because Magpies leave no witnesses behind.
Totally agree about giants needing zest. They are such iconic creatures to be handled so....meh.
It is unfortunate because I feel like they have such iconic designs, and there's plenty of lore in DND for them at least, but they just... flatline
Kaiju bulette is an absolutely fantastic idea. Gonna throw that in my world somewhere.
Bulette's are dangerous at the roughly car size that they naturally are... do we really think a Giant or Dragon could fight one that's in their own weight class?
Yes more of this is what's needed. The three arc storyline or whatever. More overall campaign and individual story arc within the campaign. I think this is a somewhat empty space on UA-cam. Please feel that.
Hello Friend, I would like to request you explain a bit more about what you mean. I am always looking for what might be most useful for my to talk about, so I'd like to ask, what do you feel is missing on youtube exactly? :) Thank you and thanks again!
Step 1: Do not write a campaign. Campaigns are not films, or books or plays. Instead, establish a setting that feels lived in and real as possible. 2: Fill the world with characters. Give these characters different, conflicting motivations. 3: Let the story play out at the table. Play the NPCs and villains as they would make choices. Quick Example: - An Orc Chieftain wants to be more important and rule over more Orcs. To do this he goes out to rape and pillage, because that is the only way to acquire political support in Orc society. - The Sovereign of a City wants to try and redirect the Orc Horde towards a rival city so he can be avenged after losing the last war against the rival city. - An Evil cult is exploiting the chaos caused by the Orc Chieftain to gain more members by pretending to be benevolent and helping the displaced. - A disgraced Knight wants to redeem himself, but has no real plans besides charging the Orc Horde in a glorious, but futile, attack. And boom, there you go. When you need to write the next session just think, "What would X do in this situation?"
I love the breakdown friend, and I think in large part we are singing off the same sheet of music. There are areas of additional structure I think can be useful for people who are newer to the game or less certain of their improv skills, but I will certainly keep your words in mind when/ if I do a session prep video. Because I do agree having developed characters is much better for a DM than a 10k word essay as to what might happen.
Couldn't have found this at a better time! Ive been dming modules and doing 1 shots (inevitably all in my head and never actively writing down story points) for like 3 years. The time I finally wanna write down and run a greek themed campaign around the idea of gods and them being killed or missing is when this pops in my feed. Thank you so much! If you manage to see this im gonna reply with my story hook and if you get the time id love your thoughts!
"The gods are dead," screams a man on top of a wooden stage in the town center. His bones showing and skin glistening with beads of sweat, it seems he hasn't eaten in days. The crazed look in his eyes seems to focus on you, despite no one else noticing. The day's heat beats down on you like lapping water on the beach. "Look at the sun; it has yet to move for three days." He is right, yet the crowd still murmurs about how insane this man sounds. "We are just being punished for our wrongdoing," some say. "It'll pass," others whisper.
I am happy my video can help. And your opener sounds very compelling. Having something natural thrown off to show something being off is an excellent way of showing stakes. The sun is never setting? Or never rising? Boom, that's perfect, easy passive drama and storytelling! I love it.
That's an awesome campaign idea, I love campaigns that involve the gods and the prospect of either fighting one or becoming one
What a coincidence you talking about Curse of Strahd, I'm researching some stuff to create my first homebrew campaign and it is also based on Ravenloft, more specifically on the many realms of dread presented on Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft and on how it hints at a possible universe-hopping campaign among all of them, but doesn't give much clearer directions after that. This campaign idea has a lot of setting but not a good plot to hold it all together in a whole. I'm planning on fusing it with another campaign idea I've also had for a year, where a cult has forseen the end of all existence in great detail and are now going around killing people who will eventually be responsible for it, but that now are, like, small orphans, or a recently wedded mother, innocent people like that. This campaign has a plot but no world to set it in and I'm considering merging the two together, but haven't figured out how to make the PCs care for stuff when they will keep hopping from plane to plane and leaving people behind and meeting people from scratch evey time
I love all of this!! I think melding the two campaign ideas together is a wonderful thought. Let one paint your plot, the other help establish your setting! If you need particular help with something I could give advice or resources on, just let me know, I'll see if there's anything cooking in my brain.
@Creative-Magpie thanks for offering! The only thought that's bugging me now is the investment thing, where the players might not particularly care about a cult invading dimensions they've never been in to kill people they've never met. I have counter points to this idea, but I don't know how good they are. The first and easiest one is making some of the targets of the cult be alternate reality versions of people from the PCs's past. Or alternately make the PCs be some of the souls that are constantly dieing and being reborn in the Mists that have been taken out of the cicle by being transported into another world, and they will get to visit their homeworlds during the campaign (I may even treat this as a twist, who knows). The other idea is having a ritual that makes you enter the Mists and travel to a random world inside them. The ritual isn't complicated (the Mists are always welcome to new guests after all) but it is very obscure and unknown, so no one does it. I'll add a detal that you can modify the ritual to transport you to a specific world inside the Mists, but these midfications are even rarer than the ritual itself, so the players would have to take some time and research if they wanted to get back to worlds they've been to before, or even follow enemies or leads to worlds they haven't. What do you think?
Echoing your point to not plan it all out. Trying to stick to an established preconception of what a game could and/or should be is the fast track to it falling apart.
I was actually reading a leadership book for my day job, that talked about the "Main Thing" and sticking to that, details will and have to change, but keep your core image at the forefront is always helpful in grounding and planning!! :)
The mood board idea is such a good one. I do that a lot when I'm putting together a new campaign to organize the themes and tone I want to convey.
I think something to reference back to in order to pull further inspiration is a very valuable asset.
Great video, my guy. I kinda feel like I know a secret because I saw a lot of the recent discussions on Bluesky that inspired some of these notes.
Now, now Wobble, don't go speaking of my dark secret tomes that I hide in the bluer skies. It might draw attention over there ;)
Oddly enough, in all my time playing D&D, I've never encountered a beholder. lol
Fair, I reckon some adventures just don't have a reason to cross paths with them. Certainly worth the bucket list though
Basilisks are one of those fun monsters that are dangerous for a wide range of parties. I love them.
Oh absolutely, Ive been part of higher on average level parties that come across them, and when the dice gods decide to punish hubris, it can be a pain. Love monsters that show off their uniqueness like that.
the dark reflection is a very cool spell, but you might want to consider changing the wording a bit to remove some of the redundancies (eg, 'when hit by and attack that required a roll' could be shortened to 'when hit by an attack' because in dnd all attacks require an attack roll by definition.) regardless, these are all really cool spells :)
Thank you for your kind words, and good point on some of the extra fluff, I would definitely do a finer comb through of word choice if I ever revisit these spells. :)
It is sad that so much of ttrpg gameplay revolves around combat. I love when the mundane that is unique to a magical world is explored, like the flower spell you made. Games can't really help but treat the player characters differently from all the other game characters. One way it does this is by giving the world magic that apparently people can casy but that simple will never be available to the players. This goes for the minor spells as well as the archmage level spells so strong the game creators simply don't trust them to the players, but you still want to be able to lay a curse upon the land and stuff. I would love to see a game do these sorts of magic justice
Magic just like art, I feel should often be the expression of one's soul. I do agree that most ttrpg's focus too much on magic to kill monster. NPC magic is also another conversation topic, perfect example being "cursing the land" like you said, I'd be curious looking at it more to see what is better summary for what NPCs are allowed to have and players aren't, because I often grey that line as I want my players to feel special.
@@Creative-Magpie I love the idea of magic as art, which is why I love the idea of reflavoring your spells and abilities a Lot. I love the hero's journey, starting out as a fairly regular individual. Yeah, you have some skills or magic, but many people around you do too. Yet through your own growth you exceed basically everyone and become special. That effort makes it real. I would love to see your take on pc vs npc possibilities and where it would actually be a good thing, mostly because I always yearn for a world that doesn't treat you as the player, but I know there's good reasons games do so
@@mischake Funnily enough, PC vs NPC magic and abilities have been in my mind as a conversation topic. I'll write it down as a video idea to explore a bit more. I agree with the hero's journey, I tend to play someone a bit further in their journey, but I do appreciate someone who comes from nothing, having the heart of a hero to stand against dark gods or demon overlords. I appreciate your kind words and interaction!
@@Creative-Magpie Well, I'll be happy to see that video when it hits :D
Good video and engaging concept!
Thank you! Your words are very kind!!
In my campaign, a mob boss kept a basilisk as a pet underneath his tavern. Those unfortunate enough to cross this mob boss were dropped into the basilisk's lair to be dispensed with.
Ah, the mob boss had a rancor to make himself a nice lawn ornament maker. I dig it!! Lots of cool stuff to be done with mobs, but my players tend to want to veer away from any mafia related stuff.
Ive been doin this for years! Glad to see someone else realize the potential.
Oh yeah, that was one of my biggest inspo's for making a youtube channel. I want to talk about all the things Ive loved creating. And from there hear about everyone elses creations.
I'm thinking for dnd it could take some inspiration from a more tragic Will-o-Wisp. Instead of being malevolent it's a sad spirit. Creates its' disguise from loose foliage, plants and animal bones. If disturbed it lashes out aggressively with lightning damage.
Hey I love that idea! Lotta good takes that help me further develop my own ideas. Everything I wanted from the video.
Honestly I think I'd personally take a different approach to a Mimikyu Monster in PF2e in terms of lore. Id keep the obviously unconvincing costume but make it a more iconic creature. Maybe a Kobold or Goblin since they have a marketing role in PF2e from Paizo and goblins are kinda the Paizo Pikachu. Plus they are more socially accepted as people groups in 2e. Maybe it'd be a "Mimiblin" because of this. Id still probably run it as a social encounter and maybe in a fight it wouldn't count as a creature but more as a "Haunt Hazzard" it manifests a dangerous outburst around itself that the party has to solve as a puzzle. Still a good vid I just really wanna keep the aspect of mimicking a more famous and beloved creature with a crappy disguise aspect.
Oh, I absolutely love that idea. The thought of the Cadaver Mime was to leave it open-ended enough for any world builder to take their own spin on it. In my world Solorin, plush teddy bear like gifts are a symbol of a great hero presenting them to children on his travels, so a Cadaver Mime pretending to be one of those would be a very close substitute in my world. I love the thought of one being a Goblin/ Kohbold to play on the Pikachu reference more!
This was a great video and really got me thinking. Would love to see some of the videos you referenced or even ones not directly mentioned but that you found helpful. I am definitely subscribing great example as well with using your own world.
