Tbh I like the variance that not having tutors gives me. Been bored playing against people who tutor up a combo over the past 10 years and if a deck only has 1 way to win then it's a boring deck
I agree that it’s boring for decks to tutor up the same combo every time, but the point I was trying to make is the combos are the issue, not the tutors. My experience is when combo decks remove tutors all that happens is they drag the game out or draw 50 cards until they draw into the same combo pieces they would previously tutor for. I’d rather they keep the tutors but remove the combos, and then figure out other ways to win. Or just be honest about playing combo so I can play an appropriate deck.
Personally i avoid tutors in my casual decks like the plague. If i want consistency I’m playing cEDH or 60 card magic. Casual commander i’d much rather 1 more cool synergy piece instead of finding my wincon more often.
I think it’s fine to avoid tutors in casual EDH, many of my decks don’t have them because they don’t have “wincons” per se (instead they just run 30-40 threats). But a lot of times what I see is people removing tutors, but then using draw engines to dig up the exact same combo pieces they would otherwise tutor. To me that often just looks like tutoring with extra steps.
engagement comment!
I lack deck building discipline
Looks like I just found my next video topic!
I just started getting into Magic a few months ago, and I saw this deck. I built the budget version first, but have been slowly progressing to the full-powered version. It’s been a fun deck and funny to see my friends see a rapidly growing Shiba as a threat.
That’s great to hear! I’m glad to hear this video and the budget list were useful. I hope you and your Shiba continue to crush your enemies! 💪🏻
Amazing algorithm pull. Thanks for the insights!
Glad it was helpful!
Excellent advice~♡
Thanks for all the kind comments, keeps me motivated!
Great video. I think builders don’t even consider building or even researching ways for one sided board wipes. I will tell you artifact creatures and themes make it obvious to create one sided board wipes
Soulscour for the win (also good for never getting the invited back!)
Disciple of Freyalise is huge in Kibo if you can spare a couple bucks. The life loss from the land side is irrelevant because bananas, and you can reliably generate a huge monkey to sacrifice for 10+ cards.
Mob Rule is a huge add to Kibo. Has monkeys on the art, and lets you turn all the stuff your opponents have played using your bananas against them for the win
I personally run an Urabrask deck with only 30 lands. I manage that because I have so much card draw, and there are many ways to go obscenely mana positive. This deck is very much an exception to the rule, especially since only 3 cards cost more than 5 mana.
U sound like morgan freeman
Recently I played a game in which I failed to play more than 4 of my 39 lands in 15+ turns. Just to spite those stupid lands I reduced their number to 34. That'll teach them!
Sometimes you have to assert your authority and not let the lands control you!
35 lands, take it or leave it (I'm running 13 dorks, 6 rocks, and about 8 ramps)
+1 engagement ~♡
for posterity: watch this video again. study it. if you learn, it will make you a better magic player. bravo~♡
Evolving Wilds is always the best target for Strip Mine.
What in the casual pod has this ever happened?
Card advantage matters Meanwhile Bazaar of Baghdad:
Hey thats a dope deck, seems very light on the ramp tho especially with such an expensive commander and curve. In your experience, is the slowing down opponents strat enough to compensate for that or wouldnt more ramp or soumething like mana flare help you to accelerate to your expensive win cons? Also 35 lands seems a bit low, how does that work out in your experience?
The land count is low compared to most my decks (I default to 39 normally) but I have Land Tax and Archeomancer’s Map, as well as 3 loot effects, so the deck functions as if it has more lands in my experience. It does usually take turn 7 to cast Gisela, but normally wiping once or twice keeps me alive until then. Also I can tutor up something like Descent into Avernus if I want to focus on getting her out earlier, or grab Land Tax to guarantee I hit my land drops. In the case of Mana Flare, I used to play that back when I first created her as a commander (during Avacyn Restored days). That deck however was all about equipment and so it could protect her easily, but this deck can’t protect her so I’d prefer not to risk Mana Flaring into her only for her to get removed and cost 9 mana while I only have 5 lands in play. I will say this deck probably has a low win rate. It gets hated out pretty hard, and I’m still learning how to pilot it. That being said, it always makes the games go a lot faster, so I feel pretty good even about the games I lose. In the future I may increase the ramp and/or wrath effects, but for now I want to try to focus tightly on the enchantment theme and see how well I can make that work.
I really like your approach in the land ratio, it really made sense I recently saw another video that just copied a pro player's analysis on the lands and applied the calculations for the commander format and it doesn't made sense
Eating good with 3 tdaddy videos in 3 days
My dude Gisela halves the damage you'd take but rounds it UP not down, barbs and other 1 damage pingers will still hit you and for that it's best to have Gisela replacement happens last when you have other damage doublers
it rounds up yes, but it prevents that much. Half of 1 rounded up IS 1. 1 is prevented.
Hey thanks for commenting. I always appreciate people helping me get better with the rules. However, Gisela is worded in a unique way, and the damage prevention effect is what is being rounded up. So if you would prevent half a point of damage, instead you prevent 1 point of damage. There's a good blog on it here: blogs.magicjudges.org/rulestips/2013/03/gisela-will-prevent-all-instances-of-1-damage/
@@t_daddy_mtg uh that's a new thing learned today, neat! I apologise for the intrusion then ^^;
I’m still glad you brought it up because I’m sure other there are other people thinking the same, so now it’s documented for any future viewers :)

Super neat deck
This has made me realize how many times I must have shot myself in the foot when playing EDH
I prefer to run Mind Stone so I can say "Mind Stonin DEEZ NUTS" and nobody laughs
Great video. Well done all around.
This looks like a lot of fun, considering building something like this
Please do a deck tech on your changling deck tribal tribal?
I think I'll do that one next, I just got a few cards for it which should make it run more smoothly
I play 22-30 lands generally, but I also play hyper-efficient commanders and/or have very low costs in my deck. My one exception is my Alania Wizard tribal list, where I run waaaaay under my average cost because she's so unbelievably good at drawing a ton of cards fast, that I never struggle. It also runs a ton of low cost card advantage.
Okay, but if you had to make a group slut deck, who would the commander be?
This is so awkward now that I've fixed the title
Great vid! Also, I've never heard Gay Kings called K&T before. I guess it make sense.
We also call them Key and Peele, or Lewis and Clark (because they find lands? lol). Gay Kings is new to me, I'll have to use that one next time :)
75-25 or 66-33...but I play low cmc
i play 34 in almost every deck i own and NEVER have a problem with it
How used is the the Giada body pillow?
Moderate fraying on the edges but only lightly soiled
I have 26!! Fight me
I'm a lover not a fighter
fascinating stuff
One of the most unintuitive things I ever learned in my journey of MTG is that if your deck has more draw, you want more lands not less. Conventional wisdom is that if you draw a lot of cards, you don't need as many lands. After all, if you drew a bunch of cards one of them will be a land. But here's the thing. You need to get there first. Which means hitting your land drops before your draw engine comes online. So, in reality it's reversed. Drawing lots of cards means you can run _less spells_ (more lands) because you will draw into more spells.
26 +/- 2 is the correct answer, just play good decks lmao
In 60 card, absolutely. In 100 card? Most of us aren't playing cEDH, so that's about 10 short, good luck with the mana screw.
It's also good to make sacrifices to RNGJesus to avoid 0 land hands, 7 land hands or stuff like finally connecting Obeka Splitter of Seconds with Twilight Prophet only to draw 6 lands in a row
I run 36 in all my decks, I however run a lot more card draw than most. Most of my decks keep a full hand usually discarding a few lands every game, I can't play all the time so consistency in my decks is very important.
Just run 40 and never look back
I will flood if i don't play 17 or less lands
The affiliate link too? You are so criminally underrated the sentence is life without parole
What a gem I've come across
About 10 is fine if you get good at drawing them when you need them.
Counterpoint: 70 lands in my Omo deck
That sounds awesome, do you have a decklist?

90% of arguments about this :v you dont understand statistics
And here I am with my Yuriko deck barely reaching 28 lands... MDFCs included. F**k the EDH Police!!!
I like running 40 because counting the commanders, it's a 60/40 split nonland/land, which just sounds nice
All my decks have 40. Don't know where the trend to run less came from, but it seems to be screwing some folks.
I run 36 lands with 10 mana sources (rocks, dorks, ramp) in all of my decks around an average of 3 CMC and my decks seem to do fine with mana. My friendgroup is pretty forgiving with mulligans though so maybe I do need to add a few more 😑
