KLR 650 How to shorten and replace kickstand
Переглядів 5 тис.2 роки тому
Just to find an adjustable or shortened kickstand for the KLR 650 is almost impossible or ridiculously expensive. Here is a $60 solution(pending on local welder costs). Also, the spring is super difficult if you take it on/off in the wrong order, do it this way and its crazy EASY The camera makes the lean look worse than it actually is, but also the kickstand could use an extra 1/8 inch which w...
EASY KLR 650 Lowering Links and Kickstand Hack @ 4:30

Should you lower your bike? If you're heels don't touch, that could be a problem pending on what your situation is. I'll happily scrape a skid plate instead of falling over because I don't have enough reach. For reference, I am 5'9"-5'10" pending on what Dr office measures me and have a 30in inseam. Below are the links mentioned in the video. Also here is a list of tools needed: -Motorcycle jac...

Love it. You could even have a hand turn screw in there with a rivnut (or other threaded anchor) on the base plate and eliminate the need for tools. Or a cam lock. I really like it. Very solid. Have fun and ride safe.
i really wish in 2022 the had relelased the 650 S model. would have saved you a lot of trouble
I found an adjustable kickstand for about $50 on eBay.
I'm curious why one couldn't cut foot off the stand and shorten it from the bottom as opposed to shorten from the top?
What are your thoughts on adjustable dog bones?
Step on the pegs to swing your leg over. I always see noobs doing this weird tippy toe ninja kicks to swing their legs. They aint gonna fall off!
I'm 5'11" and it was just too high and I did the Eagle Mike mod today and I love it. The stand is an issue, but thankfully, I already have the Eagle Mike quick stand.
Great video! I have the same problem....How much longer the dogbone should be, considering the standard one, to lower it 2 inches? in mm? thanks!
Dude great video. I’m 5’11 and I’m on my toes.
Thanks for doing this. I wish I had watched this before I changed my oil. Can you tell me if all KLRs use the same filter?
You didn’t mention dropping your triple tree to level the front suspension to the new lower rear.
I did mine today and the max I was comfortable to do on triple tree was 3/4". Rides great.
Just wondering about the doohickey adjustment. Seen many mechanics state the doohickey adjustment should be done every oil change. Simple process, tons of how to do on UA-cam. Cheers.
I have the same bike, It was too tall for me. I traded a guy for his KLR650S suspension and I lowered mine using OEM parts. There was no need to modify the kick stand whatsoever. The Kawasaki OEM side stand part number 34024 is the same for KLR 650S and KLR650. There are people having to rework their side stand because they chopped it off after lowering.
Okay, I'm here to say thank you! I have soft sided saddlebags on my gen 2 KLR and didn't want to put my camera on either side but now with your cutting board instructions I'm more confident in the bike being able to take a flop without breaking anything expensive 📸
The rising links(shorter) give much improved ride
If im thinking right the KLR S model is lower and also i think the kickstand is shorter..
Best to just leave the KLR 650 at the standard height so the suspension has some chance of working properly. If anything a KLR should be lifted so the rear sits up in the stroke.
I have so many mods on my KLR now!! 🥰
Just picked up my 23 klr in September and I’m doing my first service today. Also in Alabama. Nice to see other KLRs here.
The KLR motor needs 2.6 quarts. DON'T refer to the current manual. USe the values from pre 2010 manuals.
The more important part is the cold beer😂😂
well done champion thank you
My dealer messed up on the set up and flipped those rubber pieces and I just lost one when I was moving the windscreen up
I made my kickstand adjustable. I'm assuming that most are similar. Mine was the right diameter so that I was able to Cut a section out and thread the inside with a tap for a 3/4" threaded rod and use a couple of jam nuts
Did you adjust the forks at all? I just installed my EM 1" links last night.
Man I may have to do this. I am 5’5” and tippy toes on both sides. Barely touching. I get my lower seat tomorrow. Hopefully that helps a lot as I really don’t want to mod the bike
How did the lowered seat work? They are EXPENSIVE.
And is it comfortable?
Great video, do you know if it works for the KLR Gen2?
Yes, I lowered my 2010
did you raise the fork tubes up 1 inch to compensate for the 1inch lower in the rear?
No I did not. I considered doing it if I felt it necessary following some road and trail tests. It performs great and no issues so I won't be adjusting the forks.
Man im 5'11 and my 2018 klr 650 has me on tiptoes and ive almost dumped it several times standing still 😢 About the sag, if i drop it 2 inches and adjust sag to mid and adjust the front tubes and get the slim seat do you think id be able to sit flat foot?
Preload should be adjusted weight, not sag. It’ll effect handling.
Nice video
Thank you!!!
Seems more practical to cut off the foot (porta-band), cut an inch of "hallow pipe" at the bottom (porta-band), reweld the foot on, could be done without removing the kickstand from the bike. No need for scoring the top reworking the system adding "punch welds" etc. Maybe I am missed something?
don't know if you've altered your kickstand yet, but I just saw an adjustable klr kickstand on ebay, $100.
Oh u will buy another one. I just did and am now the proud owner of 2 KLR's, a '22 and a '23. Why? They're awesome, inexpensive and ez to work on. I traded a '21 Harley Road King in for 2 Adventure models of which I gave my son one. I don't regret the trade as KLR's are fun and not tedious to ride.
Buen día. Para los Bestia como yo o los burros como se dice en Argentina.. agregale los subtítulos en castellano como en el video del cambio de aceite. Asi sabemos que decis. Aparte vas a llegar a mas personas de esa forma. Muy buen material subis. Abrazo y buenas rutas🤙✌🛵🇦🇷
Can this only be done on a 2022 model? I was just at a shop and noticed the seat is also lower on the lower version.
💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓❤️
My corgi does the same thing
"you don't need to watch that..." yeah i did, that's why i was watching
It’s too bad this vid wasn’t to your liking. It’s the full detail of everything I did. Hard to record more than that.
Adorable corgi
More like the Chris Walling shit-show!
WTH?? The video does NOT show shortening the stand... 0 stars
Haha, I described what the shop did. I did not personally do the shortening so could not record it. If you do everything I did in my video, your kickstand will be shortened just like mine.
The 2022 owners manual page 116 says 21 ft lbs NOT 15.... on your drain plug!!. Oil fiter cap at 78 inch lbs.!!
Using the specs from Eagle mike. He states the lower ft lbs. I would imagine maybe his magnetic plug doesn’t need the same torque as the factory plug.
21 is way too much it will eventually destroy the case. The manual is wrong. Kawasaki has put weird numbers into a lot of manuals. You find the proper torque of 23Nm / 15ftlbs in the older manuals.
What tank bag do you have? Great video. This is my next purchase. But im thinking t-rex-racings guards.
Thanks! amzn.to/3D5618K I’ll have to check out the t-Rex-racing guards
THANKS for the link. I just might buy this one.
By how much inches did it get lowered?
1 inch
I went with an adjustable stand just in case i want to put it back to normal height some day. Wasn't cheap, but i like the flexibility. I used a harborfreight "hook screwdriver" to get the spring back on, they are a bit of a pain.
Not a bad idea. I figure I can buy a stock kickstand to swap out pretty cheap if I decide to raise it back up.
Decided against a center stand?
Yeah no center stand for me. My last trail ride confirmed that was a good idea. The way I ride I would scrape, catch, damage the crap out of any additional crap I add to the underside of my bike. If you ride really easy and no rocks/technical stuff I’m sure it would be fine.
what about ability to mount fog lights on the front bar? thank you
This option was not designed for the KLR factory fog lights. The stock headlight is bright enough for me so I don’t feel like I’m missing out with something else that will break when I dump the bike on trails. Compared to my gen1, this stock headlight is like the surface of the sun haha
I love ❤️ dogs 🐕
