it would be impossible like the song says for oscar not to know the piano was out of tune.just maybe he liked it that way .whos gonna tell him other wise.
How many strings does a grand piano have? Around 230. All you need is one out of tune string in the middle register and it sticks out like a sore thumb. Glad I play guitar.
This translates almost perfectly to guitar There's something magical in this performance though, kind of haunting. I transcribed and appreciate it that way cause I'm sore don't play piano 🤷♂️
This gem was composed by him. It always astounds me how talented he was to not only perform but also create these songs.

Simply extraordinary and without equivalent.
damn this guy is a magician, such a smooth solo
Man, what talent! This performance was like an action flick starring an a-list hero. OP hung himself up so high that solo tree - as usual! Well, it's him - I knew he'd MacGyver his way down but couldn't wait to see, well hear, how he'd do it. What a genius!
What will a voltmeter connected between A and D read ?

It is easier to accept that Kirchhoff was wrong than to check whether the circuit used by Dr Lewin correctly describes the physical situation that he wants to explain. The correct application of Faraday's law allows confirming that Kirchhoff is valid.
Removing the battery from a circuit to prove Kirchhoff is wrong is like removing the engine from a car to prove the concept of cars is non functional. The experiment itself might be interesting, but in this rare scenario he shouldn't say "Kirchhoff is for the birds". Because this is an exception and a constructed case. Not the norm. Rubbish.
Wolfgang-Michael Bauer Or, you could take a second look and realize the battery circuit may be common, but it is a special case. And the rules that we use to study and design it are incomplete when it comes to dealing with what is possible. Its not about where we have come, but about where we can go. And what will happen if the environment changes beyond what we ignore. What happens to all these circuits that have no distinguishing characteristics or specifications for environmentally changing magnetic fields? In Brazil, below the South Atlantic Anomaly (yes, its now not so far south and also spans to Africa), that blew out its power grid for the second time in February... tens of millions of users lost electrical power when it collapsed. How? The geomagnetic field fluctuated with a mild solar flare. It turns out transformer cores accept and amplify this energy. And current flowing backwards in the power grid is not a good thing. Leave that battery in the circuit and add the inductor and you will likely charge up the Battery while you cycle the inductor, if you can design it to maximize the pulses in one direction by making the discharge much slower than the charging pulse. Batteries have a lot of capacitance. The Bedini SGC works on this principle. The solar heliosphere is cancelling out, with it the Earth's geomagnetic field is failing/fluctuating more... Business Science does not consider these effects. This lecture is just a mental exercise for the students, nothing has been developed to re-design electrical theory to incorporate this "open system" phenomenon into the design of mass produced and utilized electrical systems like power grids or pc's. The three laws of thermodynamics are a special case... they are predicated on closed systems. And ignore hysteresis. They were developed before electricity was known as an energy source. So many things could be done when one gives up their laws to the birds. Like, recognizing that induction is a two step process. First the capacitive transfer of magnetic field energy to a conductor, then the discharge of that energy to a load. Not directly the charge transfer to the load. Use a flux-capacitor (bifilar wound inductor) to harvest the changing magnetic energy and you defeat Lenz's law electrical resistance. The special case of common electric motors no longer apply. Joe Newman and Thane C Heins both made electricity with electric motors doing this. Joe increased his capacitance with long inductor wire lengths, Heins using Tesla's design. Business Science refused to patent either and also blocked the commercial application of either. But, the process and proof are in the public domain. Want a car with unlimited range on self-generated power? A home generator that has no exhaust? You can't buy it, but you can make it. To do so, you will have to feed the birds. Peace, B

This is crazy, my last name is kirchhoff
AND I LOVE IT:)
After so many years, this topic is still very actual and subject of many discussions. Meanwhile two new videos were made to prove that this experiment is according Kirchhoff's law: ua-cam.com/video/v85ln_l0fcE/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/-AjdUuq8JNY/v-deo.html Enjoy it!! best regards, Dirk
OMFG that is such an amazing flaw in science.... Kirchhoff was probably drunk while writing his law to miss such a flaw... I mean i still think that Kirchhoff's law is an amazing discovery, one i could never make but i can see that even the greatest discoveries have their flaws...
When you 'power' your device with risning/fallign magnetic flux, all what was a cabe, now is a battery. Kirshoff law still works, but you have to re-draw your schematic and place voltage sources in place of wires, because when flux changes, wires works as sources. For a technicans is a very known and sometimes painful problem, when wires become voltage sources due to induction. Painting half of a blackboard with integrals is just a smoke cover for your tricks profesor, but you won't foll a technican :)
Agreed, the description of the video mentions this point and goes beyond, by suggesting that the lecture treats the battery as a "conservative field" (which rigorously it is not) and then omits completely from the circuit any representation of the inductive emf.
You guys are missing what is meant by a “conservative field”. The only way a field integral can be path independent is if what we call the curl of the field is zero. Kirchhoff’s law depends on the existence of a scalar potential to the electric field. If there is a changing magnetic flux, there is a curl in the electric field, thus no scalar potential exists, and there is a net gain in energy around your circuit loop. You can redraw the circuit with an inductor...sure...but now you are working a different problem. Much of engineering is recognizing what we call "equivalent problems" that are easier to solve and yield the same result.
Kevin Lyon The saying amongst engineers about physicists used to be "Every TheOry has a hole." It is broadly recognized by working people that the rules that justify reality are not adequate and experience is a better teacher. Sadly, it is hard to swallow that this is intentional. And the best theorists can do after more than 100 years of disinformation, is to point out small little inconsistencies like this one. But still, at least it may inspire others to think outside the primary box that has boundaries that mislead. The math is complex and needs to be only because the simple rules of reality would change how we do things at a fundamental level and give us insights that would revolutionize the basic services we contract for to stay alive. Anyone coming from practical observations could, as many have, innovate the systems and create things that simply cannot be by following the basic laws of science, using the limited analytical tools that apply only to the special case designs that are in use today.

@@pauliexcluded1 No worries. Nothing for you here. Broadcasting power without loading the generator wouldn't help the power companies. This type of demo points to a world that only exists in the minds of people who choose to model the world as it is, not as its taught. To do that, you would have to suspend disbelief and deny what you think is real. You would have to feed the birds with more than Kirchhoff's laws. Things like Lenz's law, capacitors store energy on the plates not the dielectric, that current is just the rate of charges moving past a point in time and it can't move faster than light speed, and that the phase of magnetism can be adjusted with relation to the phase of the voltage transfer during induction. Obviously not on your bucket list. Just the wind rattling branches against your window outside. Or the babbling of a brook.. you might discover the secret of the natural abundance of nature. Not how we do business today. Peace, B
Speaking as a non graduate technician there seems to be something wrong here. Lewin states that the EMF induced at time t = 1v but seen from a tecnician (ie non scientific pov) that emf is operating on a parallel loop where the battery completed a series loop. Also , in what is the emf induced. ? Since he is speaking of magnetic fields then the field will be rising or falling ie not constant. Also Lewin appears to state EMF (volts) and Flux (phi) are the same Is that true.? Does he even say that ? He glosses quickly over the point. The idea of shifting the voltmeter form the RHS to the LHS to produce different instrument readings makes no electrical sense.unless those points are at different potentials IOW the LHS top corner is not at the same potential as the RHS top corner. I am not dogmatically trying to correct Lewin I am simply saying that what he describes goes against everything I have understood re electrical cct's.
+divvy1400yam600 I believe one of your points (the battery operating on a series loop versus the emf operating on a parallel loop) is related to the critique drawn in the video description).
This video is only part of the lecture. Try to search for the complete one, where an experiment, with scopes plugged on both sides of the circuit shows that the reading comes out different indeed.
This guy loses 10 minutes of a highly paid class in MIT to make a foul of himself. I don't know what's worse, if the wrong Ohm's law equation, or drawing a circuit with lumped elements and don't understanding what the lumped circuit abstraction is. KVL is correct when you apply it in the proper condition that the change of magnetic flux OUTSIDE an element is zero. This is the base for all circuit theory, together with the assumption that the buildup of net charge INSIDE an element is zero. This dumbass uses an EXTERNAL magnetic field, which obviously can't be handled by KVL, to show that KVL is wrong!! Pathetic...
On one hand I feel happy with your comment, since it reads as though you are one of few people who understand these points, that I raise in the description (in a somewhat different but equivalent perspective). On the other hand I disagree with the suggestion that the lecture is a "waste of time" (let alone the minute error of changing Ohms law, which is purely human). It raises the points of what these laws are about (whether or not there exist more general principles, symmetries, etc. that give rise to them, and what should or should not be kept when extending the analysis to coupled (interacting) systems, etc.). All lectures from Walter Lewin are worth watching and it is an act of generosity that he agrees, under the auspices of MIT, to share them with the world. How would we have such an opportunity to refine our views in so many aspects illustrated in all his lectures?
zer0s0und Well, I didn't say the complete lecture was a waste of time, only this 10 minutes. If he wants to make a point which will "blow your minds" he should be rigorous on the initial conditions and don't talk about KVL like it is a bad thing. I believe he doesn't know that the practical approach in electrical engineering is the use of the lumped circuit abstraction, which makes 2 big simplifications in Maxwell's equations to ease the study of electrical circuits. But these are simplifications that are physically valid, because it's a matter of adhering to this discipline using the basic circuit elements that we all know about. He uses a convoluted and badly built argument when he could simply say that Kirchhoff's laws are simplifications for practical engineering use (even a few years after Kirchhoff). He makes another arrogant mistake, like saying almost all books are wrong. They are not wrong, they assume inductors as lumped elements, where the rate of change of magnetic flux is different than zero ONLY INSIDE the inductor (as a good approximation). If so is the case KVL can be applied without disregard for the physics involved.
thelovedreamer I don’t agree with your conclusions. The point of that teacher is really fantastic. This is a reminder ea for a lot of engineers about the facts that behind all theories there are a lot of assumptions. Change one assumption and you get a complete different view and even understanding of the physics. On top, it is a great moment to think or think again about the physics of a problem and the meaning of all the concepts we use on a daily basis. But to undertand the utility of the concept you need to be able to pull yourself at a higher level.
thelovedreamer I must agree with your (+thelovedreamer's) points. They are more abrasive than mine, and resort to solid practice and knowledge instead of trying to rest on purely pedagogical arguments, but they are objectively true. There is a feeling deep inside me however that keeps telling me that it has been great to have this brief "show" running by Lewin with all his choices of bold terms. So, I am still not able to accept that these 10 minutes have been a waste of time, but I am trying to. Maybe the title of this video should be changed to "10 minutes for the birds"? :)
thelovedreamer Engineers should study more closely Maxwell's Equations to try understand electrical circuits. The issue is normally engineers get frozen in front of Electromagnetic theory. What this professor is trying to teach you is that circuit theory comes from Electromagnetic theory and not the opposite. Or KVL is one of Maxwell's equations and I'm not knowing that? Try to see this video to understand why is important having no magnetic flux variation (internal or external) to make possible use of KVL as a law, because in general it is not.
The big difference comes into play between the non-conservative field produced by the solenoid, and the conservative field by the battery. We are not used to dealing with non-conservative forces or fields that are independent of the paths they take. I like to think this can be compared to the difference between Newtonian and Non-Newtonian fluids/mechanics.
Strictly speaking, the battery produces a field that is not conservative. You do not need to imagine all the discontinuities encountered in a path through the interior of the battery (at the microscopic level) to agree with this point. Just recall Maxwell equations and the fact that a battery is being constantly discharged, therefore fields produced by it vary in time. Of course, for *most* practical purposes, the typical time scale being very long, it becomes convenient to represent the battery as a conservative-field stationary drawable circuit element. This same reasoning, with different criteria, applies to the "hidden sources" introduced by the external varying field shown in the lecture videos. Such fields are not represented, even approximately, in the original drawing (that is why Kirchhoff rule, which should be about conservation of energy, fails). You may argue that in this case the fields variation is "too fast", but then an assumption of what time scales are considered to be reasonable is in place, and this is ultimately dependent on the practical conditions being dealt with. As a matter of fact, this point made by Lewin is nothing but a particular (and almost trivial) restatement of the known result that there are no true stationary processes in the electromagnetic theory. "Electrostatic", as it is called, is an approximation that is very good in in a "long-time" limit, and it is only near these limits that we are able to properly define things like "capacitance" or "inductance", things that we draw as local elements on a circuit to account for the charge and energy conservations throughout it. This is no news to anyone who had a minimal contact with Jackson' book (for example). In the particular example of this video, the time variations introduced through induction are very fast compared to the (typical) battery discharge times. Yet, they are still very long if one takes the typical circuit-length scale involved and divide it by the speed of light. So it would be quite acceptable to represent the exchange with the external source by a local "impedance" drawn on the circuit, even though the fields are, ultimately, non-conservative (but again, in reality most of them are from the outset, given the "right" time scales). Sorry for the long post.
zer0s0und I've never heard it discussed in regards to time. Thank you for the post. You've made E&M more clearer and harder for me to grasp at the same time. I will just stick to the basic everyday knowledge taught in most high school courses lol
+Antonios Dimopoulos The closed loop integral of E.dl in each loop that consists of one R and one Voltmeter is zero because dphi/dt through an open surface attached to the closed loop is zero. Kirchhoff's loop rule holds in these 2 loops (not in any other closed loop). Thus the voltmeter reads the value of the integral of E.dl going through the R and that is IR. Thus V1=IR1 and V2=IR2 and that is what the demo shows! If you want to be a purist, the integral E.dl from one side of the R to the other is (I-I_v)*R. Here I_v is the current going through the Voltmeter. But since I_v is some 8-10 orders of magnitude lower than I, it can be neglected. If you are still in doubt I suggest you read the Lecture Notes which have been posted as a pdf file (look below the video). I cannot help you any further.
"Pesado" ... hehehe'
Could somebody explain to me where the hell he connects both of those meters? I really can't imagine they are connected to the same A and D terminals, that would be completely ludicrous...
LReBe7 You are starting to get his point. The connections are exactly the same point. The model that is used to describe how electricity works, what it is, has some limitations when circuits operate in reality. This restricts how you consider taking measurements, which would invalidate the models. Of course, over the years of people finding these anomalies has developed a lot of language and arguments justifying the flawed models. In the real world, circuits can pick up energy from anywhere and dump energy in non-modeled ways. Ever wonder how and EMP takes out electronic devices... or how a data signal can be transmitted under the ocean without an active source of power boosting the signal? (The amount of energy needed to launch a signal that far through a normal communications cable would fry the cable. (They tried it, it did just that when they were first installing the cable.) Tesla was able to amplify electricity as much as 5,000 times using capacitive discharged energized spark gaps. He was able to transmit AC power further than anyone else at the time with three phase power by trapping the current between the conductors, and limiting the current losses. He was able to shift the phase of the magnetic field push-back (commonly referred to as Lenz's law) in an electric motor by adding capacitance to the stator winding, creating a motor that generates electricity. (See TC Heins' YT channel, he copied it and proved it). The basic method of amplifying data transmissions, used the world over by land lines on phone systems, is to run the signal near a ferromagnetic material (such as an inductor coil) which will respond to the wired signal with a larger magnetic field, that is coupled back into the wired signal... amplifying the power en route without an external power source. This could easily amplify transmitted power too. TC Heins also designed a transformer that does this with 4 times amplification. Tesla's model of electricity enabled him to visualize and design circuits that are quite different than the limited model used by modern science. He developed it by tireless experiments doing ludicrous things to discern the real behaviors of electricity. Current is not the amount of charge that passes a point in time. It is a different configuration of eclectrically energized Aether. It was called dielectricity, and can travel 57% faster than charge configured electricity independently of charged electricity in/around the same conductors. Yep, FTL. And this was known when Einstein was made famous with is ludicrous theories. Science today is devoted to supporting business. I like to call it Business Science. It models reality in a way to maximize the profit that can be taken from the public. When compared to reality, its all just BS. The point made here has been expounded by many others who chase down these inconsistencies, but it won't change a thing. Why? Because the truth would set everyone free. The economy that supports and enslaves you would collapse. Our leaders are incapable of managing that change, so they suppress the expressions of truth. These ludicrous methods and tests are not allowed to enter the commercial markets. And the rhetoric to keep the points confusing is part of that system. Peace, B

A circuit diagram is actually a graph: a set of vertices and edges. There are not x,y coordinates. All that matters is the way it's components are connected to each other. So when he draws that voltmeter left or right of the inner circuit, it shouldn't make a difference because topologically it's the same diagram.
Circuit diagrams are always idealizations, that abstract lots of physical details and represent anything conducting by a straight line. That's why you CANNOT SIMPLY DRAW A SOLENOID INTO A CIRCUIT DIAGRAM! His "diagram" with the solenoid in it is not well defined anymore. It's not clear from the diagram what exactly he's doing in the experiment.
So so tru exactly what I was about to write, connections as well as resistors in a circuit diagram do not have inductances and they do not couple to anything because they are idealized. what is even worse is that if he was to actually represent his circuit with an equivalent diagram he would see that the inductances that couple to the changing electric field are in series with the resistances and if you try to make an equivalent circuit that matches what he is descriping you would have to put the coupling inductances in parallel with the resistors which makes no sense at all.He simply doesn't understand the proper use of circuit diagrams to model electrical circuits.
vinzent1992 His drawing is exactly the set up he has on the desk. His other lecture on this topic shows the actual results that match two O' scopes as he powers up the solenoid inside a loop with two resistors and two voltmeters. His peers also accused him of faking the results, as none of their assumptions based on training (like you two) can explain this. To clarify inductance for you: Magnetic fields are expressions of current that pass through most things. When they encounter a conductor, they are converted to charge. If the conductor is connected to a component that has a charge differential and/or a component that will convert charge to some other form at a threshold that the current at the conductor reaches, the charge will flow and produce a current/magnetic field of its own. If the conductor has capacitance, the current will not flow until the capacitance is saturated or the polarity of the magnetic field reverses. This will change the phase of the Lenz effect to match the incoming magnetic field in an alternating current source as is commonly used in motors. However, motors are not wound with inductors that have capacitance. Flux-capacitors, bifilar wound inductors are discouraged. All conductors have inductance if the frequency and energy profile of the source current can resonate with the conductor. This is how antennae work. The wires are powering the resistors with the centralized inductor coil producing the concentrated current flow expression of the magnetic field. He is very clear that this only happens on power up of the coil. I would guess the capacitance of the wires is insufficient to keep powering the resistors once the current stops changing. Or perhaps a larger current source might do it? There have been demonstrations to this effect. Good luck opening your world views. Peace, B
