This actually captured the energy of the original song. Most of the other covers are either too slow or the arrangement might be too sparse to capture the full spectrum of Cruel Summer but this matched it quite well.

thanks to all of you for making me fall in love with this song. honestly, before that i didn’t think much of it, i only recognised the bridge since it kind of comes in like a train haha the more i listen to and arrange songs from TTPD the more interesting i realise taylor’s songs are from a theory point of view. so here are some of my thoughts about this song (sorry this is really long i hope some of you understand/find at least some of it interesting haha). since i arranged exile a while ago, i see many comparisons. its structured in a way similar to exile, with the verse (0:02)-“chorus” (0:50) section sounding like just an extended verse, repeated twice before the extra long and powerful bridge (2:27), almost a different song entirely. its so different she actually changes tempo at the bridge (from 71 to 78 bpm, see 2:20 though i didn’t do a very good job of showing that in my cover lol). again, similar to exile the bridge features a I-vi-V-IV chord progression with a tonic (in this case Bb) note as a pedal point for every beat, as was the case in exile. however, the smallest man’s beat is a lot different, including drums in a kind of marching style (as she performs on stage), as compared to exile’s more muted, bell-like repeated fifths on the piano. i guess this shows in the feelings these two songs represent, with the smallest man having a more vengeful, condescending tone while exile represents a deep regret or longing. another thing is the verse section. the entire first half of the song switches from 3/4 to 4/4 each measure, or i guess you could count it in 7/4. however the first 3/4 is syncopated into 4, which gives the illusion it being a bit faster. this is pretty unconventional especially for pop music, and the way it transitions so gracefully into the 4/4 bridge is awesome. taylor has a couple other songs written in an odd meter (tolerate it and closure, both in 5/4), and tolerate it especially follows a similar pattern. the first three beats of the 5/4 are syncopated into 4, while the last two have four even eighth notes. given all three of these songs were co-written by aaron dessner, i think he has a thing for odd meters and syncopation that fit quite well to taylor’s storytelling ability. one last thing i’ve been noticing with taylor’s songs: they are all actually quite rhythmically complex. i think people sometimes underestimate how much rhythm plays into making a song catchy or having a certain feel. in this one, obviously the syncopated 3/4 bar is quite interesting, as well as her vocals for the entire bridge actually. while i was arranging it i was having a hard time writing down the rhythms without actually having to play it out myself a few times (notably at 2:54 and 3:30). in this one she uses a lot of upbeats, all the way down to the sixteenth notes. my theory is it has a continuing effect of having the listener expect more, which is why this bridge can go on for sooo long without getting tiring. i had trouble also with the second verse in my boy breaks his favourite toys, the bridge in so long london, and parts of the verse in the black dog, it’s quite tricky. for so long london, (as well as some parts of tolerate it and august) she uses a more free approach, making it hard to write down precisely, but it generally i try my best to reduce it down to some -plet over an odd amount of beats, and play it as close as possible to the original. as you can probably tell i’ve been having a lot of fun arranging this album (it fits the piano very well). if you reached the end thank you i hope you enjoyed reading lol, if you have thoughts please comment! i love analysing music and i’d love to discuss :) sheet music: bit.ly/4aQPeU1
