Why not just define a Macro for the sentinel value instead of making it a string?
A great question. The best answer I can give without more details would be because the instructions called for a string. I am guessing you might be referring to #define SENTINEL "quit" so please respond back with what you are suggesting so I can give a more definitive response. In my live classes I normally adress that there a always several ways to accomplish a task.
