I mean, you are my hero, Geoff. I got Operation Mindcrime from Columbia Record/Tape club, album of the month, sat on my dresser for a year. Then I listened. The only single-most significant album aside from Mindcrime that changed my life was Maiden's Powerslave. I got my doc to help kids read and write. I'm not gonna ask anything. If you made this song, know that I worship you.
Geoff gets major props for attempting this song even tuned down...in 1984 he was a vocal god...he took vocal lessons from one of the Top teachers at that time ( Dr David Kyle " maestro" and it allowed him to really stretch the range of his head voice down to his chest voice and use minimal falsetto but it took a tremendous toll on his voice. The fact he was singing E5 on a nightly bases with such ease and having a beautiful vibrato could only last so long before his voice suffered. High C notes give tenors problems and they will often tune down to a B which gives you and idea just what a high level singer Geoff was. By 1991 he was still sounding good but was getting a bit of a help with electronics during concerts and avoiding the highest parts of this song...BUT STILL sounding awesome. He had vocal surgery at some point and that along with age which thickens the vocal chords and makes vibrato much deminished, his voice declined. I still love his voice today even at 64 and we still have the japan 1984 concert to watch to see just sheer vocal perfection...im talking notes opera singers dread. I grew up as a teenager during the 80's and saw all the legends in their prime...im thankful for that. My daughter is so envious and wishes she had been alive then as she loves the same music( 80's rock). I thank all these bands for giving us such an incredible gift of memories we will cherish into our twilight years.
My brothers band opened for him in Tahoe years ago and i was told this man is one of the most grounded , genuine human beings hes met. You can feel it in his music.
I can't keep watching this. It doesn't do the song justice. Geoff for sure can't reach any kind of range for this gem of a song. I've been there from the start. I hope the original 5 get back together for one more time and have a go at it again for nostalgic reasons. Geoff can't pull these songs off like he used to. His voice is his instrument and it's taken a beating. On the mello songs or songs that don't need those high octave notes, he'll be just fine. Songs like Nightrider, Queen of the Rych and so on, let Chris help him out like he's done in the past. At least, they can make it work. Love these guys from the inception. Miss you Queensryche for what you gave me in early 80's into the 90's. For me after Hear In The Now Frontier, I knew there were some serious changes going on internally. Last good album for me was Promised Land. Ryche On! Geoff for me will be one of my all-time favorite vocalists of all time, and that says a lot. With saying that, his age and smoking hasn't helped him. I will and always have profound my respect for Geoff. Standup guy and what a great leader.
Tate has always been vastly underrated as a vocalist but amazed he is singing better than ever and this song has been vastly underrated as well. Remember the original in 84 being released for the LA Olympics then I believe. This stripped dowen version is stunning.
