Kala Mukha
The Symbolism of Kala - Mukha
The Kirti-Mukha image is extremely popular amongst the Newar craftsmen of Nepal, where it is known as Chepu.
Its sculpted serpent-devouring form frequently crowns doorways and shrine arches( Sanskrit - torana - )
In Tibetan art, the Kirtimukha appears as a heraldic device on armor, helmets, shields, and weapons.
Makara are considered guardians of gateways and thresholds, protecting throne rooms as well as entryways to temples; it is the most commonly recurring creature in Hindu and Buddhist temple iconography
Kala Mukha has two apparently opposed aspects, in a sense 'benefic' and 'malefic' in another sense.
The Kala-Makara head is called in India and Ceylon both "Makara face ( Makaravaktra )" and the "lion's jaws ( Simha-Mukha)," and it is noteworthy that in what is perhaps the earliest reference to this motif, the Simha-Mukha is an"ornament at the side of the nave of the king's chariot, evidently as in the Chinese example.
The well-known Chinese "ogre mask,", which appears in so many characteristic ways on the earliest Chinese bronzes, is certainly formally related to the "Makara face" of the Indian tradition. It cannot but be recognized that the relation is one not only of form but also of significance and that the designations t'ao t'ieh, meaning "glutton", although given by Chinese scholars to the "ogre mask" very long afterwards, was appropriately given.
In the early Buddhist structures in Ceylon, the gates are guarded by giant creatures, who fulfill the same purpose of magical protection as the genii of Assyria. They are named Dvarpal/Dvarpala, 'guardians of the approaches.' 'These grotesque demon figures were supposed to be endowed with a mysterious power, vested in their intense hideousness, of scaring away enemies.' The groups of flesh-tearing lions at the gates of Lombard churches are identical in their intention.
Kirttimukha serves primarily as an apotropaic demon-mask, a gruesome, awe-inspiring guardian of the threshold.
The Kalamukha as the terrible Face of God, who as the Sun and Death both generates and devours his children, is analogous to the Greek Gorgoneion and the Chinese T'ao t'ieh, the "Glutton."
The more, indeed, we learn of the origins of the forms of traditional and folk art, the more we realize that their application is inevitable and see that they are neither products of convention nor of "artistic" choice, but simply correct: "ars recta ratio factibilium."

He is going to take birth when all humans have freed themselves from all labor. No one will need to work to live.
