Install Final Drive Protection for BMW R1250GS - Tech Talk
The ParaLever final drive on the R1250GS is a wonder of engineering design. I shudder at the cost of repairing that and worse, damaging it along some remote backcountry trail. Casting my eyes around for a way to protect this part of my machine, I came across Wunderlich's LeverGuard. This deceivingly simple device simply attaches to the bottom of the final drive housing. And boom! Protection for the final drive from the road. Follow along and as 2 Awesome Dad's install this little wonder to the GS.

There's many aspects of the GSA I do Iike - its looks - and some things I don't like so much - its size. The cover may add some potential splash protection and protection from stone chips, but it's mainly the looks is why I installed this on my GS. Follow along as we put this easy to add acc...

obrigado pelo vídeo! é possível instalar em uma k50 2013 à 2016?
Great video! Hey do bugs slip under the spoiler and splat on the helmet visor?? Ty
Okay fellas, please help me avoid stripping threads on the engine/bracket screws of my '24 GSA. I removed the two T-50 engine bolts on the left side to install the bracket. I loosened the GSA OEM crash bars, slid the bracket in, but the hole on the right is off just a smidge. Which area of the bike/frame do I pry on/flex to get the T-50 bolt back on without cross threading it? Any words of advice greatly appreciated! Great video.
Good day to you! I am imagining the new bar needs to be moved to be toward the back of the bike? Either way if the bike can be secured, ( ie. back the bike into a solid object like a vehicle or wall, protecting the tail of course ) The using a ratchet strap to wrap around the bar and extending toward the back of the bike to a solid object. ( ie. vehicle bumper or something really solid ) Then ratchet the strap that little bit to line up the whole perfectly so the bolt may screw in nicely. Conversely, if it needs to be pulled toward the front just reverse the direction. Make sure the left side bolts are not tightened all the way to allow some movement. I sincerely hope this helps! Let us know how it works out please. Stay safe!
@@jodymcleod4636 Hi Jody, thanks for your kind response. Yep, the frame bar needs to go rearward just a smidge, like 1/2 mm. That's a great idea. I have ratchet straps and will try what you mentioned. Cheers~
Appreciate your content to help others (like myself). Question: did you run into any issues with the Right-hand side lower crash bar not lining up with the mounting points on my 1250 GS. I installed the Altrider skid plate and then went to do the Altrider lower crash bars. The left side lines up without issue at all mounting points and no force was given following their instructions on which to bolt up first etc. the Right hand side would not. If I follow the instructions and connect the top brace to the long frame bolt…then the top front to the frame and then go to the bottom front (threaded case mounting point)…the lower tube is off considerably. Everything is loose too (so nothing tight by any means). If I undo the top front bolt I can do the bottom front, but then can’t do the top front. If I take out the long through bolt so nothing is attached…I can do both the top front and the bottom front, but then the top tube won’t line up where the long through bolt goes (nor the holes in the bracket line up with the bottom tubes). I even sent pics and this info to Altrider requesting a replacement RH side lower (since the left aligned perfectly). Altrider was great and immediately got it out. I just went to install. Same exact thing with the now 2nd RH side lower. I’m now wondering if it was a bad run of a batch. I’m not finding anything online about any issues installing them. My friend has the system on his 1200 and said it went on without issue. My concern is even if I could muscle them enough to flex (which as you know would be hard due to how robust they are)…there would be such force on the bolts that an impact could potentially sheer the bolts and that especially makes me nervous about that front lower which is threaded into the engine case. Anyway sorry for the long winded detail. Just curious if you ended up challenges, sweating, swearing like me on the install. Thank you for your time.
@ROTTSOLID It's been a while, but Jody recalls we did have issues. We had to really loosen all the bolts and slowly tighten them individually. It was as though the bars were not completely in sync with the bike.
@@2awesomedadsadventures988 thanks for the reply. No amount of loosening can fix how far off the right hand side is. Left side perfect. And for two right hand side bars to have the same issue there must be something off in the production of them when they were made. Skid plate was simple and is on, but no crash bars now so I have to rethink it all. At least I have the MAM valve covers.
Hi is there any video instruction on fitting the R 1300 GS Front Wheel Cover Extension (aka "Beak") please ?
@jennyosullivan3853 Hi. Neither of us has a new GS to fit accessories and upgrades to. Not yet anyway. Lol.
Just what I need to see! Thank you!!! Love how you explain it.
Thanks for the feedback. Enjoy.
Great vid - only comment is prior to tightening the hex bolts up fully - if possible take the bike carefully down the street to get the handlebars the most comfortable you want - then final screw down 👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks for the feedback. Always appreciate hearing it. I'm a wee bit of a safety nut, so I'd tighten, test ride, adjust, test ride till I got them just where I want them. Have fun and ride a ton.
For the life of me i cannot screw the screws into the rubber. Go halfway then any firce damages the plastic nuts! Bad design by touratech in my opinion no need to be that stiff!
I know this is old but I just got this and remembered your video. So easy to install after watching your video. Thanks!!
Nice to hear it was helpful. Have a good one.
Shaft protector
Just finished installing this on my 23 GSA. Thanks for the video. It helped a lot.
That's awesome it helped with your '23 GS.
Can anyone help me with the upper OEM screws size on the Cowl ( minute 4:10) I need to remove the Puig Headlight Guard on my 1250 GS and put back the OEM srcews and I can't find them. I know these were T24 flanged screws but I need to size ( M5? M6? and what length) if someone knows please.
Hi I need to remove my Puig Light guard and I can't find the OEM screws I know they are T24. I am talking about the screws that fix the upper brackets on your video to the Cowl over the Headlight. Would you know what are the sizes of those 2 screws ?
Sorry. Not off hand. I'm lazy. I go to my BMW dealer.
No Pb thank you for the prompt reply. I will do the same cheers @@2awesomedadsadventures988
Without the slider, the foot peg would protect the axle as well.
Perhaps. I just opted for some additional insurance in the event I repeated a similar crash of my 2009 and damaged the axle on this machine.
You need a new blade man lol. I got one fitted to my GS 1250. Looks good.
some extenders don't fit on some bikes, plz explain........
Thanks for the question. I think not all sidestand 'feet' are the same size and/or shape. There's no standard or universal size. The bike manufacturer decides what they think best for that particular model.
The oem spacer is aluminum not plastic.
Thanks!!
Welcome.
That was pretty easy to do.!! Thanks for showing...
Glad it was of some help.
$120 for this is way too expensive... As it is a sacrificial item, just buy one in China for a tenth of the price.
Fair enough. That's certainly an option. I've had mixed results with non-brand name, offshore products. Best of luck with your choice.
Nice explanation, thanks.
Thanks for the feedback.
You don’t tell where the longer bolts go
Shoot. Sorry about that.
It'll be a cold day in Thermal, CA before I punch holes in my $2,000 hard bags, ESPECIALLY for that measly amount of water! I admit the mount itself is pretty okay, but the method of securing the bottles (those dippy straps) is down right CRIMINAL! As for the bottles, they'd be about the right size for carrying extra FUEL (although I'd always worry about being rear-ended). Speaking of carrying liquids, seems Roto-Pack might have been better option (assuming one has come to terms with drilling holes in their cases). All in all, yet another example of Canadians being far too accommodating/polite. Your neighbors to the south would have a few choice words for those TourTech boys!
Well done, thank you.
Thanks for the feedback.
If you look at tourtech brief video on it he is Turing it to the right ! You are correctly turning it to the left which makes sense since the hole size on the bracket decreases in diameter.. something is not right here, this should be the easiest part of this installation only taking 2 seconds and few other GSA owners are puzzled Just as I am.. we can’t line up or lock the bracket on the adaptor. The only difference is your have 3 holders on each side and I have the two ( smaller size).. any advice would be appreciate it
Having an awful time putting the bracket on the adaptor or holes not lining up and won’t turn to the right to lock.
I found using the original bolt was too difficult and not long enough. My printed instructions said to use only the washer so I used new, longer bolts that came with the lense. I think they changed their mind or had too many complaints so started to furnish all new bolts. I have the the GSA maybe that's a difference with the headlamp assembly but the lense and bracket is just fine.
Used this video together with the Altrider provided installation manual and it couldnt have been easier to mount the crashbars to the bike!
Thanks for sharing this positive feedback. Always appreciated.

Great video. Dropped my 22 gs into a.mud pit. Dragged it put. Ofcourse the drive shaft has some character. Never knew this thing existed . Ordering one .
I'm sorry to hear you dropped your GS. More importantly, I hope you faired better than the bike. Glad this video was of help.
@2AwesomeDadsAdventures as with all my get offs over 20 yrs. I was going 0 mph. When it's stand still I am a danger to my motorcycles.
does it work though
For my height on the seat it does make a difference. My only issue is taking it off and storing it when I go off road.
@@2awesomedadsadventures988 okay, I bought one off amazon, it didn't do much on my bike, it did something but not a lot and it had to be in my line of sight. I'm glad I bought a cheap one first

thx a lot for this excellent video. It helped me very much! Thx

I didn’t see the spacers installed on the switch guart
I added a simple bicycle water bottle cage to my crash bars on my r1250gs.
And probably less money too; more left over for riding.
Thank you for the video. How tight should the bolt studs be tightened?
Imagine trying to grab a bottle while driving
Not good. Lol. Also, hot. In the current hot weather, the water is almost ready for a coffee. Nice source of extra water at the campsite.
..just a question, why you didn't select the ezCan system?
Thanks for the good question. At the time I purchased the auxiliary lights I went with the Cyclops version as a 'package.' However, couple years later it stopped working and Cyclops had moved to using the Hex ezCan Gen 2. It definitely is a superior product and happy to be using it instead now.
Hi, noticed you have R&G the spindle protector too, did you take off the original cap to fit?? Looks like it leaves the seal and white stuff exposed to ingress by doing so?? I left mine in but it melted, can you let me know what you’ve done, cheers
Thanks for the question and my sincere apologies for the belated reply. Yes, I took off the original cap/seal when I installed the spindle protector.
Some info on tightening sequence and torque values would have been useful. This video has limited info and potential
Fair comment on the lack of such detail. We'll update the description in the coming days to include more details like the torque values. All part of thr learning and sharing. Have a good ride. Cheers.

@@alvarosolis7837 Thanks for letting us know the video helped with the installation.
Are those bottles Thermo insulated by any chance?
Hi. Thanks for the question. Short answer, no. The two bottles from Touratech are not insulated. From their website they say: Lightweight aluminum drinking bottle with extra large screw cap. made of 99.7% aluminum extremely lightweight tasteless and odorless BPA, phthalate and lead-free suitable for carbonated beverages suitable for recycling.
Hi What is the torq of that screw the one in the side stand switch protection? Thanks
Hi and thanks for your question and patience pending a reply. In the Touratech instructions, there were no guidelines on the torque settings other than to use Loctite. I often refer to this website for this information, www.jvbproductions.com/Wethead%20Torques%204.pdf, and it says 35 Nm. Hope this helps.
@@2awesomedadsadventures988 thank you
@@2awesomedadsadventures988 hey, installing mine & the bolt loosens off as i rotate the side stand back & forth. Im trying to determine if this is by design & that why they specify the loctite or not. I.e. its suppose to just hold the switch in place allowing it to rotate thus be quite loose with the loctite preventing it from backing out. Now youve had yours installed for a while is yours now finger tight or sill very firmly 'nipped up'? I believe 35nm is for another bolt as that's way too high & i dont think the kick stand would be able to rotate if the bolt was that tight. I initially tried 10nm & even that feels too much/ made the side stand stiff to operate. Thanks
Alloy isn’t magnetic…
Yup. You are right.
Well done... Just ordered one
