It's time to leave the safety of the Mallaig Harbour and continue our journey north. We have a rough day as we head up to the Kyles of Rhea, with an unexpected gust of 40mph, before anchoring opposite the stunning Eilean Donan Castle. We then take a step closer to our goal of sailing to the Isle of Skye, as we head under the Skye bridge on our way to a stunning anchorage on a secluded beach on the Isle of Rassay.

New sub. Thanks for sharing your experiences!
Thank you 😊
We got married at Eilean Donan (ay-len don-nan) in 2018 and would love to drop anchor there, but had written it off after someone in Navily had said there was now local moorings there and no room left to anchor!
Must have a beautiful event with that back drop. We didn't try anchoring on the castle side although the antares charts do cover that area and seems to says its ok barring a little consideration for tidal streams. Totaig bay was lovely though, its pretty small and there are a couple of moorings in there but still enough room to get in there in a couple of spots.
Superb 👏 best yet
Thanks, the anchorages on this section of the trip were certainly petty special
My friend is the Castle Keeper there. A wonderful place indeed.
Wow, that must be a wonderful job, certainly a magical location
Great video and truly relatable. We find in a swell no matter the wind strength we have a fully reefed main sheeted in to steady the boat under engine. How much anchor chain do you carry? And do you always set a tripping line? We haven’t yet anchored overnight preferring moorings or marinas. We have 40M of chain.
Yeah certainly agree on having some sail out to stabilise the boat, makes a huge difference in swell. We tend to use the head sail more as its easier to operate form the cockpit but hopefully going to rejig the main and reefing this year to make it easier. We have about 30m chain and 40m rode. Has served us pretty well in most anchorages. I have a line on an anchor ball attached to the forward end of the anchor which can act as a tripping line and lets me know at a glance where the anchor is compared to the boat. Anchoring can be pretty nerve wracking, particularly the first few times you try and put your head on the pillow to sleep on anchor. The main tips I would give is; get the antares charts, £20 for the year and we use it so much, helps you find great anchorages and has detail information and advice for every anchorage. Get the AnchorPro app, less than £5 and keeps watch while you sleep, simple and does the job great. Pick a comfortable anchorage in calm conditions and start with lunch stops so you can keep an eye on things and build confidence. Then when ready for an over nighter get to the anchorage early so you can sit on anchor for a few hours, ideally through a tidal turn, before turning in. If it didn't go anywhere while you were sat on deck enjoying a cold beer through the afternoon evening it probably won't over night. If you are sailing the west coast freeing yourself of the need for marinas or moorings really opens up a lot of options and can save a lot of money over the season.
Great atmospheric vid, sitting here at home feeling the cold😊. Typical Scottish summer, four seasons in one hour😅.
Certinaly lives up to the old cliche, "if you don't like the weather wait 5 minutes"
I'd kill for a bowl of creamed rice right now (here in Thailand).
I think it was porridge but pretty close, hello from the otherside of the world 😊
beautiful scenery 👍🦘
It was an truly awesome anchorage, pretty exposed but we got luck with the conditions and highly recommend it for a visit.
Great video....best one yet
Appreciate that bud, it was an interesting few days of sailing
Great video! Good to see you’re mainly showing all the cold, wind and rain of Scottish sailing - helping keep our Anchorages quiet! 😀
You can certainly see how the weather over the summer deteriorated. Editing the first few videos I was confused as the memories of the decent weather earlier in the summer had be blocked by what came later.
@ tell me about it! We had a 3 week cruise in July. Think we only had a handful of dry days the whole time and spent Theo whole time reefed down. On the plus side we burnt very little diesel. We’ve since upgraded our heating situation with a stove!
Yeah the diesel heater we installed was probably the most important upgrade we did. I would love to have a wood stove on the boat, I think it would be so cozy. My trip this year will be May/June, am convinced that the Scottish summer is now May but guess we will see how that theory lays out.
Great stuff. I think Tim may have smiled on that last sail! All the best. James😊
I won't stand for such accusations 😂
I am really enjoying watching your videos and thank you for posting . I have one question I see you are using a wind turbine for helping produce electricity do you find it worth while ? Everyone seams to be promoting solar these days. Many thanks Robbie
Jury thanks fr the kind comments. Jury is still out on the wind turbine, it didn't feel like it produced much last summer but not sure if that is because it is not set up properly or not very good. One of my jobs to check this year. I think solar panels are generally better but I didn't go the solar root as i can't decide on a decent place to mount them that will capture a lot of sun but not be in the way.
Thank you for your reply, I have neither on my boat but will have to make a choice soon one or the other, I've a small boat so not both 😂@@joandtim
Great stuff guys and a great part of the west coast. Without sounding too critical I would make more use of your mainsail than you seem to be. I would also normally hoist the main before the genoa and why have a reef in the main in such light winds.
I think its a fair critism, I guess all I can say is we are still learning and the main is more complicated to manage and so we often default to the simpler option of the headsail. But I do think we made progress as the season went on, it was our first season on the boat after all so was a lot of new things to get our heads around. Over reefing is also a fair criticism I think just a confidence issue. Not really knowing the limits of the boat and wanting to air on the side of caution. Also the winds on this trip were very variable and the few minutes of video you get to see might be taken from several hours of sailing where the conditions aren't always as calm. However we could certainly afford to be less cautious with the reefing a lot of the time. I want to get the rig checked this year I don't know the history and although it looks ok having it checked would probably make me more confidence to push the boat harder.
Very enjoyable, great to see Arisaig again as we've not been there for years❤
First time there for us and really loved it, beautiful place and a really good anchorage.
Those brave pants need to be sent back. They looked a bit defective.😅
They add braveness not necessarily steady feet 😂
Thanks for another lovely video. Your reefing pennant looks rather odd. Normally they go from the back of the boom to the leech cringle then down to the boom below the cringle. Then when you pull the reefing line it pulls the cringle down to the boom making the foot and the leech tight so you have a better shaped sail. I may have misinterpreted what it looked like so apologies in advance if I did. Have fun.
You are 100% right on the reefing, took me quite a while in to the season to figure it out though. And when I do the reefing lines aren't long enough so was following the wrong set up of the previous owner.
@@joandtim I always have to think very hard how to set them up at the start of each season 😂😂
@@joandtimI'm assuming that with the boom bag you have a loose footed main. Tie your clew reefing line around the boom, up to the reefed clew cringle, back to a cheek block towards the end of the boom and back to a cleat on the boom. If you wish to bring it back to the cockpit, take the line forward to the gooseneck end of the boom, through another cheekblock, down to a deck block, out to a turning block, then back to the cockpit.
To be honest not 100% sure what most of those words mean. The main is attached to the boom on the bottom. The reefing lines for the rear of the main sail run from the cockpit to the mast up the mast and through the boom appearing out the top of the boom. From here they are supposed to go up to eye in the mainsail and then back down to the attachment points on the boom level with the eye in the main. At the point of the series you are up to I hadn't figured this out, I do figure it out eventually but the reefing lines don't seem long enough to set it up this way so I still have some figuring out to do. The reefing on the front of the main is a faff there are some hooks on the boom and rings on the main which have to connect together, it can be a real pain particularly in bouncy seas. Its one of the main reason I don't adjust the reefing as much as I should when sailing and something else i want to sort out before this season.
Beautiful 😍
Great video as always. That was our Etap 26 you passed. Great to see it with the sails up. 😊
Awesome, I did post on the etap facebook page to see if I could track you down. Hope we pass you again this season, all the best
Seamed to be a great little trip. I'll have to get myself up there one day.
Scotland is such a wonderful place to sail, we feel very spoiled every time we are up there.
Another great vid and good to see Jo and Skylar again.
Thanks bill 😁🐶
I've got this boat with the inboard engine. There good
The leisure 23 is a really good all rounder in my opinion and a great boat to start out on, at least she was for us. I remember seeing some advice from someone who said get the smallest possible boat that can do everything you want and Salty certainly ticked that box. Where abouts is yours?
@joandtim yes it's a very good boat it seams. I bought it from an old man with deep pockets as its had everything done to it. I am in bridlington Harbour
@boatworlddarren definately the way to do it. I bought mine for £1800, spent about £5000 on it and sold it for £3500. Boat finances are great 🤔
@joandtim lol sounds right.
Nice to see the team reunited. Nice to be able to set your schedule to coincide with nature. Hope you have smooth sailing
Cheers bud, the weather wasn't the best but the west coast never dissapoints
Great vid. The Sound of Mull always seems to funnel the wind one way or the other, usually against the direction you want to sail! Loch Aline is our preferred bolthole there. Just have to be mindful of the ferries and strong tides at the entrance. But once in, its very peaceful and good walks.
The sounds of Mull certainly seems to be a pretty decent wind funnel and with our luck, or judgement you can bet it will be on our nose 😂. No spoilers but we do check out Loch Aline later in the trip and it certainly is a great anchorage like you say, little nerve wracking on the way in but well worth it.
Great episode. 👍 Lovely smile Jo.😍
Might be more of a grimace than a smile a lot of the time, particularly during rough weather but I think Jo enjoyed some of the trup.
You guys got around well done 👏
It was a great trip despite how bad the weather was this summer, we did go quite the distance though and really explored a lot more places than we hoped at the start of the summer.
😊 have bought you a coffee or 2
Hi Tanya, just saw it come through, very genorous of you and much appreciated. Hope you stay with us for the rest of our seasons adventures xx
@ Your very welcome and I certainly will 😊 be following
Actually since he was on starboard tack you should have altered course to avoid him.
The boat on Starboard tack is the 'stand on vessel' not a right of way as such, more a first dibs to that sea space. Spot on!😊
I didn't say anything about right of way, he followed the rules as they are intended. When you didn't alter course as you should have, he did to avoid a collision.
@@SailingInScotland Exactamondo me'ol mucka.
As with everything, what you see in the video isn't really how it played out at least not at the level of detail you are trying to analyse it at. From memory, and it was quite a while ago, we were heading in opposite directions close to the rocks/islands at the top of the sound of luing. I was somewhat restrained by the channel through the rocks which would stop me from bearing away too much and I was pretty tight on the wind to turn to starboard. I had adjusted heading to the extent I could though. Had we have both held on our line I doubt we would have had a collision, but the other vessel turned a little more to port so the gap between us was more comfortable. You are right on the colregs but this didn't rise to the point of their needing to be a debate over who has right of way. It was simply to skippers seeing a situation and taking sympathetic action so both sides could continue without too much disruption. I appreciate I may have over-egged it a bit but when I record these videos I am generally pretty over stimulated from the excitement, adrenaline, fear, cold etc. so things seem a bit more dramatic at the time than they do it retrospect. I make no bones about my lack of experience and that I am learning as I go, but I am very considered person when it comes to the boat and always act to ensure myself, and those around me are kept safe. As such I would never chance a collision regardless of who I think has right of way.
None of what I said was meant as a criticism, just a reminder going forward. Always keep in mind there is no such thing as 'Right of Way' on the water. Even if you are the 'Standon vessel' you are responsible to alter course to avoid a collision as the other sailor did in this case.
Just to let you know, if Craig hasn't already been in touch, that Hat Trick is safe and well after storm Eowyn. The covers have taken a beating but still attached.
Cheers bud, appreciate you checking on her, worrying about here every time there is a storm is the hardest thing about being 6 hours away. The covers are a bit of a mess anyway, need to come up with a better system for putting them on, as long as they aren't causing issues for anyone else it will be fine until I get up there next. Hope all is well with your boat.
If feeling green Jo, always sit high side in cockpit, or even better take helm as concentrates eyes on the horizon
Good tips, we are both fortunate that sea sickness isn't a major issue for us, I think this time Jo just spent a little too long down below hiding from the cold. That with the rough weather and first day back on the boat are a bit of a potent combination for causing a bit of queasiness
Hi Jo and Tim Congratulations for the progress in navigation. You now have a good sailboat. Enjoy it. A word of advice: choose your cruising periods better otherwise you will be disappointed. Your are yong and I am old . Perhaps in Scotland we shall meet you . We arriv at the end of May from Brittany France , for 2 months in Scotland and come back
Unfortunately our cruising periods are chosen by work not our desires. We are very fortunate to be in a position where our jobs allow for some flexibility but only to a certain extent. Not that it would of mattered last year, we went in May/June which are traditionally pretty good periods but there just wasn't a summer last year. Enjoy your trip over, what is your boat name I will keep an eye out for you when we are up there this year.
Tim, Hope you had a happier experience than I did at Ardfern. As a total newbie, more than one staff member there went out of their way to make me feel small when I dropped in for a night on my delivery trip with a paid skipper on board.
tbh we have had pretty decent experiences there, from the staff. There is a lot of rich people going through that place on a regular basis, everyone we have met has been lovely but I can imagine there is potential for some snobbery at times from various sides. TBH I am not a big fan of marinas in general, love the area but don't want to spend a moment longer than neccessary on a pontoon.
@joandtim My thoughts exactly! The previous elderly owners of my boat almost exclusively anchored and I intend to do the same as far as possible.
I really enjoy following along. Fair Winds and Following Seas….
Glad to have you along for the ride
Great series Tim. And of course we are not just sticking around to see Skylar - promise and those are not crossed fingers ( honest!)
Guranteed inclusion of a disgruntled spaniel from now on.
Nice video. You might want to consider the way you have rigged your reefing lines. It is desirable to get the sail as flat as possible (up wind point of sail) and you cannot do that with the current set up. Just google it for info. Good luck.
Yeah we know its not set up right now, but was quite far into the season before we realise. I have it set up like the previous owner in the video or at least I think I do. When I eventually realise it and set it up properly, line goes from the end of the boom up to the sail then down to the boom I realised that the reefing lines aren't long enough so still can't fully set it up right. I am not sure if I still have it wrong or if the previous owner had it wrong and made the lines to fit but either way I think some new reefing lines are in my future. Cheers for the tip though
Superb footage fast becoming my favourite sailing channel, well done
Appreciate it bud!!
Another enjoyable passage Tim. Looking forward to the next installment 👍🏴
Certainly was a fun few days of sailing.
Fantastic video. I'm finding your journey very insightful and inspirational.
Thanks bud, certainly learned a lot on this trip and great to be able to share the experience
How has the Rutland wind turbine performed? Is it useful and are you happy with purchase after a year? I see it whizzing around in your video.
Tbh not that satisfied. Its pretty low power so wasn't expecting that much from it, but was hoping it would go some way to offset the power drain from the fridge. In reality I am not sure it has generated much of anything. Our house bank is pretty much dead so doesn't hold much charge which isn't helping. My plan is to replace the house batteries this year and then do some testing to see what I am getting out of it. At peak performance it should be about 45w which would offset the fridge consumption, but I don't know if it is generating anywhere near that amount or if it is that is making it to the batteries, could be connection issues etc. which I need to investigate. So it hasn't really delivered to date but I am not sure if that is the turbine or the way I have it set up. Will probably cover this in a videa at some point in the future.
@joandtim Thanks for the reply. It's made me think more about getting one. A follow up video would certainly interest me! Good luck with your adventures.
@ No problem, will come up at some point in a video but might be a while as we are currently struggling to catch up on this years trip which we will need to do before we can get to maintenance. Might be something I could look at on a livestream next time I am up there.
Ok. I think you need a friend to do this with. It's easier with someone to help/make tea etc ...
Yes definately a 2 person job, barely had a spare hand for a coffee and a biscuit
The live streams were very good Tim. The image and sound quality was great
Yes they definately worked better than expected. The hope is to do some when sailing this year, obviously phone signal when moving around will be more spotty but its pretty decent in most areas of the west coast so hopefully will be possible. Bringing everyone a long for the sail around the Mull of Kintyre for example would be awesome
Skint knuckles means a job well done😊
You're back 😊
Cost me about 250 ish. Plans yes St Kilda always, see you far north west.
Hi Tim re rudder I bought a rod of Nylon 27 or some number can’t remember, and had local machine shop run them up for me. Problem I had was that the aluminium shaft was worn and scored badly so I mixed up graphite powder with the really strong resin mix west marine do and filled with that, has lasted well so far. I did make them longer, hopefully give them more chance for less wear.
🤢Always a lovely job my favourite.
👍
