African Bonsai Convention 6
Welcome to the ABC6 Bonsai Convention, held at the historic Stellenbosch Town Hall from the 8th to the 10th of November 2024. In this video, we spotlight an unforgettable collaboration between two internationally acclaimed bonsai artists, Elsa Boudouri and Jennifer Price.
On the third and final day of the convention, these masters took on the extraordinary task of restyling a legendary pine tree that had its first transformation back in the 1940s. This tree, steeped in decades of history, posed a unique challenge and an incredible opportunity. Elsa and Jennifer worked side by side, weaving their distinct artistic styles into a unified vision. The goal? To honor the tree's storied past while bringing out its most striking features and breathing new life into its timeless form.
The result was nothing short of spectacular. With Elsa’s eye for detail and Jennifer’s dynamic approach, they shaped the tree into a breathtaking masterpiece-a living testament to the art of bonsai and the power of collaboration. This transformation showcased not only the skill and creativity of these two artists but also the deep respect and reverence bonsai practitioners have for nature and history.
As part of the ABC6 Bonsai Convention, this project served as a perfect conclusion to a weekend filled with inspiration, learning, and community. The convention itself was a celebration of the art of bonsai, featuring international and local demonstrations, thought-provoking lectures, and a stunning maze-like exhibition of over 200 bonsai trees.
The convention also paid homage to its location in Stellenbosch, a town with a rich heritage that dates back to 1679. Known for its Cape Dutch architecture and breathtaking landscapes, Stellenbosch provided the ideal setting for an event that beautifully merged tradition, art, and nature.
Whether you're a seasoned bonsai enthusiast or just beginning your journey, this video will inspire you to appreciate the intricate artistry and dedication behind the bonsai craft. Watch as Elsa Boudouri and Jennifer Price breathe new life into a historic pine and create a lasting memory for everyone who attended the ABC6 Bonsai Convention.

Hello Romano. For how long do you leave a repotted bonsai in a Shaded Area or in a Semi Shaded Area & then place it in an area where it gets full sunlight? Thank you.
When you move a tree to a shaded or semi-shaded area after repotting, it gets less sunlight. This means the tree’s leaves won’t lose as much water because they aren’t actively photosynthesizing as much. The idea is to help the tree conserve energy and resources while it recovers from repotting. Since the tree won’t be using as much water, you’ll need to water it less, but keep an eye on it to ensure it doesn’t dry out completely. How long the tree stays in this sheltered spot depends on its health and the season. I usually wait about 1-2 weeks. When the tree shows signs of new growth, I gradually reintroduce it to its normal environment. Be cautious in warmer weather-moving it back to full sun too quickly can cause it to lose leaves. Fun fact: while in the shade, the tree may grow larger leaves to capture more sunlight. Hope this clears things up! 😊
@bonsaiwithromano Thank u Romano 😎🌲🌳🍁👌🏻
Nice bonsai..like
Thanks 🤩
Thank you for the extraordinary video that caught the soul of this event in all aspects! Amazing experience that I will never forget!
My pleasure, glad you enjoyed it!
Amazing bonsai contest 🌳
Thanks! 🙏🏼 Glad you enjoyed it.
@bonsaiwithromano my pleasure,loved it
Beautiful. ❤
@@hassimgora thanks 🤩
This video is on point in all regards, and captures the event so well. Thank you.
I’m glad you enjoyed it!
I love the maze layout of the show! It looks like a fantastic event!!!
Thanks. It was a unique set up.
@@TheBonsaiZone @bonsaiwithromano it was explained the layout was inspired by a labyrinth, I think the labyrinth close by at Babylonstoren. The last display, at the last table, was a labyrinth planting of Portulacaria that many enjoyed following it's route with their fingers.
@@living_sculptures_za Cool, I saw that planting at the end of the video!!
Very cool. Thank you. Super nice trees
Thanks for watching. 🙏🏼
I would love to learn more about South African syls. I've got an acacia im trying to build into piereer style.
Acacia is a great tree. If you looking at learning more about South African Styles I would recommend two books Liam's book on South African tree species as bonsai and Practical Guide to Bonsai Styles of the World by Charles S. Ceronio.
local is lekker even for bonsai...😊
Indeed, you don't need to go far for bonsai magic. 🌱 Thanks
Fantastic South African styles trees.
A lot of hidden gems. 💎 there are so much more that I just couldn’t capture it all. 🫣
@bonsaiwithromano . A follow up in the making.
@ 🤣🤫
Excellent. 🎉

It's always so good to see South African trees.
It is, we have amazing trees here.
Most impressive collection. Love it. Favorite part were those urban yamadoris.
Thanks. They are starting to really look good. 🙏🏼
Looks awesome.
Thanks 🤩
Wow Eendag as ek ook groot is :) Looks amazing !!!
Thanks. It happens faster than you think the one moment you potting all your cuttings, 🤫 next thing you know you have tons of trees.
Well done Romano, you must feel mentally great after this clean up, but I'm sure your body is tired. I enjoyed the glimpse into a day in your life and the scenery of the farm. A few good looking trees there. A fun video to watch, thank you.
Thank you for the kind words. This clean up does make it easier to work on my trees. So I do find myself working on my trees a lot more.
Very very great teacher
He is really passionate and knowledgeable about bonsai.
Really enjoyed this interesting video Romano 👍
@@scottbredin2882 thanks. 🙏🏼
I really enjoyed your thoughts and your trees Jaco!!!
Thanks so much!
Very good considering it's Armands first public presentation. Neat slides, and he kept a good pace. Looking forward to seeing more from him in the future.
He did well! Really loved his presentation.
Most informative and educational.❤
Glad it was helpful!
What was the species he was recommending with shallow roots and small leaves? Great interview!
Ficus burtt-davyi
So Beautiful. Nothing better than home grown talent.
That is true and what I loved about the club is how the youngsters step up. Nice to see so many young people keen on learning more about bonsai.
Fantastic study. In terms of Bonsai, this is really informative and can be implemented into SA soil mixes easily. Would nice to see a study on structural integrity of perlite over time. Thanks. Love the chanel.
Great suggestion! I will look into that.
Wow, very beautiful trees! 🤩
They are! A young club with a lot of potential. 🫡
I am 19 and have been doing bonsai since the age of 15. I am always learning new things at the club. Love this hobby.
That is awesome!🤩
Really enjoying this content. Thank you!
Glad you enjoy it!
Great interview. Jaco, you have amazing trees. Love your passion for the art. See you at ABC6.
Thanks, I will share this with Jaco.
This is an amazing interview. Well done to you both. I found this to be inspirational.
Thanks, Liam. I really loved my visit to Jaco's place. He has years of experience and amazing trees.
What kind of a tree is this?
It’s a Boxwood. They are commonly used for hedges and there are quite few varieties.
Beautiful Kei Apple Bonsai 😇☺️🇯🇵🍁🌳🌲😊🙏🏻
It is a beautiful tree. The whole display around the tree was arranged in such a way to make the tree stand out.
Nice one Romano, thanks for capturing the awesome atmosphere of the event. Well done.
@@living_sculptures_za I am glad you enjoyed it. I have a bit more footage of the event and I am revealing a special guest appearance a bit later. Stay tuned to see who it could be…😉
Thank you for sharing this!
My pleasure!
Don't do that all types of technics for making bonsai , that tree do struggle alot to survive , its be like when you bring a parrot and put in Cage. Humans are so hardy and sens less .
Thank you for sharing your concerns. I completely understand where you're coming from, and I appreciate that you're looking out for the well-being of trees. As a bonsai artist and enthusiast, I want to assure you that the health and care of the trees are always the top priority for anyone practicing bonsai. We follow the best horticultural practices to ensure the trees thrive. Bonsai is not about harming the tree but creating a harmonious balance between art and nature. The techniques we use are carefully designed to work with the tree’s natural growth patterns, and we never work on a tree that is not healthy and growing strongly. Bonsai trees, when properly cared for, can live just as long, if not longer, than trees in the wild, and the process can actually help protect and nurture them. Thank you for your concern, and I hope this helps explain how bonsai can be a responsible and respectful practice.
That’s awesome! So much work, time and love go into those trees!
That is true. Members spend years getting their trees show ready.
Very cool
It was a very interesting transformation.
Fantastic. Thanks, Romano.
Glad you enjoyed it.
Really enjoyed that. Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed that. Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts. 🫡

In my area, the tree will grow towards the water mainly because there is more sunlight.
That’s interesting. So what you are saying is that the open area above the water and the reflected sunlight on the body of water encourages the trees to grow towards the water?
@bonsaiwithromano yes but it has nothing to do with the reflection. The woods here are so dense with trees that they grow towards the open area above the water.
Ahh that makes sense. Then you say here what area are you referring to?

This is amazing. I am proud to say I have one of the species mentioned in collection. Where can I purchase the book? Keep up the good work.
That's great! If you would like to order a book, please contact Liam directly via email at laserliam@gmail.com.
Awesome 🎉
Thanks 🤗
Thank you Romano for the video and thanks to Willem and Freddie. The tree on the rock that Willem has referred to was a rooted cutting from the small leave "congo" variety that I bought from Rudi Adam in 1999. Tannie Dot Hennegan assisted me in the design in 2000. The rock was collected near Griekwastad in 1989.
Thank you for that info! I am always amazed at the amount of knowledge there is on South African bonsai. It's truly a small community.
