066 Andrew Patterson | Ubuntu, Doing Hard Things & Your Self Worth?
Andrew Patterson’s conversation explores his evolving perspective on success, challenges, and Ubuntu, deeply shaped by his life experiences. Originally from South Africa, Andrew’s definition of success has shifted from material wealth to embodying the philosophy of Ubuntu: "I am because you are." His three pillars-learning, mastering, and teaching-reflect his commitment to personal growth and community impact. These principles were influenced by his upbringing during the apartheid era, where understanding the challenges of others instilled a deep sense of empathy.
Key moments include Andrew's transformative Table Mountain project, climbing the iconic peak daily for a year. The endeavour tested him mentally, physically, and emotionally, while raising funds for charities and fostering connections. This project also serendipitously led him to his wife, who supported him throughout this life-altering challenge.
Through wilderness therapy, Andrew worked with at-risk youth, teaching them resilience and self-worth. This taught him the importance of creating space for others to grow, distinguishing between helping and rescuing. It highlighted Ubuntu's principle that collective effort benefits all. His work in wilderness therapy was a profound lesson in humility, patience, and the enduring impact of small actions, such as sharing Ubuntu principles with teens.
Andrew emphasises embracing challenges to uncover inner strength and resilience. His belief that growth arises from discomfort underpins his philosophy. Whether enduring corporate rejection, pursuing creative projects like writing, or training through physical and emotional hurdles, Andrew’s life exemplifies the importance of persistence and self-belief.
The conversation also delves into societal dependency on convenience, contrasting it with Andrew's advocacy for reconnecting with effortful living. He uses his lessons, such as teaching fire-making to troubled youth, to demonstrate how discipline fosters transformation. His ideas of self-worth resonate as he reflects on overcoming self-doubt and societal expectations.
Andrew’s life is a tapestry of stories showcasing humanity's ability to persevere, innovate, and contribute meaningfully to others' lives. He now channels his experiences into community-focused initiatives, blending his love for nature, storytelling, and personal development. Whether building resilience through his Whole Foods work or planning future ventures in Cape Town tourism, Andrew’s mission remains consistent: inspire and uplift others by living authentically and striving for meaningful progress.
Don’t miss this conversation that just might spark your next transformation.

Great episode. Thanks Harry!
Dave your sleep is showing 😳
I am sharing this with my 21 year old who is kind of looking for mentors.
❤❤❤❤
Great conversation, thanks!
First off. Amazing background music and secondly, you’re spot on with the “ah ha” midlife crisis thing. I remember saying when I was younger that I wanted to be like older people who Literally just stop giving a shit about things that don’t matter in life. Have fun, and stop chasing the fucking rabbit 🐇
Here's why, after 11 years of engaging with all the typology systems, I flock with OP: They type people upside down. Please allow me to clarify: They see people from who they really are *at root.* I.E. They see the root/inferior cognitive functionality, all the mask stuff aside... and build up (to the outside world) from there. When we/you do that, it paints a more accurate picture of people for who we Truly are; when no one's around, and when we're doing our best to be who the external world requires us to be.
Great talk! Really an informative interview. I like the thousands of micro kindness concept.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Excellent ... some great insights as to success and purpose in one's life ... Thanks!
Wonderful session, thank you so much. Thoroughly enjoyed Martyn's gold.

Great to see shorts like these from last year are coming back around. Was a period of standardising the background music. Check out the others instead to see if they’re any better 👍 The words haven’t changed though 😉

@@successwithpurpose I'm familiar with Vinh Giang through his Stage Academy course. Thanks for sharing!
Drama king.
How so?
@@successwithpurpose He said, "The people we love the most are people who are at their mid-life crisis... wanting to kill yourself... in the darkness." That's drama. And what do they do? Intensify the drama by gasbagging on about the "hero's journey".
@martingifford5415 curious take. From my experience as a coach and financial adviser, people tend to be most likely to enhance their lives when they’re in a world of chaos and uncertainty. When they have put on too much weight, lost their job, had a major surgery, their spouse has left them, issues with kids, etc Is there an issue with wanting to connect with the people at the exact moment they are most likely to make change?
@@successwithpurpose Investigate the assumptions. Do people need to "make change"? What is the real change that is needed? Is the change merely a higher ocatve of the same illusion that got them into trouble? How did they get into trouble in the first place? Why is crisis needed? Etcetera. Therapists and clients tend to assume that intensity = gain and change for the better. IMO, it's just drama and the therapists are parasitically feeding off it. A friend was praising himself for helping an addict get clean and get a normal life with kids. So the _addict_ dragged more kids into this deluded world. You see? There's no sense of the big picture. It's all superficial spectacle.
Maybe, but Drauma, is Real. "Everything's funny, until it happens to you." ~Dave Chappelle
