      @nathanhassallpoetry I have read some really good books that use metaphor, and some seem to have a poetic quality about them. I think that you mentioned that the meanings of our words can become more precise as well. Your poetry has good visuals that would help when putting on people's minds what is happening in a certain scenario.

      Which books? Metaphor of course is a wonderful way we understand the world around us. We use them consistently in speech and writing and in our day to day. The poet tends to find new metaphors, to refresh the world around us. I speak more about this in my video "How to improve your poems" and will make metaphor specific videos in the future. Thank you for your words about my poetry visuals. Much more of them to come, too. Here's a link the mentioned vid: ua-cam.com/video/GZsCkC-xxQY/v-deo.htmlsi=fdFB6OIgysvKtcm6

      @nathanhassallpoetry I can not say exactly all the books. Some classic authors include Joseph Conrad, Jack London, and Hemingway. There are some more recent writers such as Peter Straub, Neil Gaiman, and Stephen King. I do read a lot of classic authors who make some reference to mythological figures such as Charles Dickens and Jane Austin, perhaps. It brings more depth to their stories. I am constantly reading. I will include others who come to mind. 😉

    This made me think of a symptom of major depression called "psychomotor retardation." This can be translated to lay terms as feeling lethargic. Conversely, exercise does wonders for focus and memory! I don't remember precisely and this next thing might not be accurate, but I think stimulating the motor cortex with movement helps take "cognitive load" off of whatever we are trying to think about and helps us think more freely. This might be underlying the benefits of walking and thinking :)

    • @nathanhassallpoetry
      @nathanhassallpoetry 6 годин тому

      I didn't know this was the term, but I understand that feeling well from my past. I'm glad you mentioned exercise, as it's more 'unorthodox' suggestion I would also give to poets to improve their work. There are many things, from endorphins, to information synthesis, to better health and energy, to confidence, and more. I see poetry (like other things in life) as a holistic practice. It's also a bodily art. We engage the body in the language we use. And also, yes on the ol' philosophers walk! It also allows us to be more in rhythm, and our brains hunger for rhythm, and are creatures of rhythm (hence metrical poetry, music, walking, heartbeats, dance, the cycles of the moon, female reproductive cycles, etc.). What do you think?

    • @deforeestwright2469
      @deforeestwright2469 6 годин тому

      I agree, but to be fair, as someone who hangs with poets but took science classes in college, I think more scientists respect poetry than poets respect scientists. I can’t speak for the tech bros, 😂. In a sense I think a lot of poets would benefit in terms of “succinctness” and clarity if they cross-trained by learning a little bit about logic, mathematics, and the philosophy of language. If nothing else this would help them understand what’s really going on with modernism, postmodernism, and now post-postmodernism, and actually start taking the forefront in the arts, like they should, by grappling with he fundamental problems of language, communication, and artistic expression. Just a thought. 😂

    • @nathanhassallpoetry
      @nathanhassallpoetry 6 годин тому

      @deforeestwright2469I agree with you, and there are certainly some scientists who respect and engage with poetry, and certainly some poets who respect and engage with science. In search of a deeper synthesis. Certain people in tech think in terms of faster = better. This is true SOMETIMES. Faster internet makes our life easier. Faster reading. . . Why? Slowing down and paying attention is essential to our cognition as well. One of the reasons music is enjoyable is because of silence. One of the reasons the dark can terrify and compel is because of light. And I agree, and must thank you for your guidance, that poets would deeply benefit from a stronger foothold in logic, philosophy, and understand our modern condition better, and see the deep engagement between more typically "rational" thinking and the intuitive, bodily, and imaginative impulse that poetry strikes us with. To understand the postmodern age that we live in, and not to resist its propensity to fragmentation but see that for what it is, and put the shards back together to bring forth unity or wholeness will help us take great strides forward in bringing our culture back to a more balanced state. My point remains, though: scientists who do not already would benefit from reading poetry more.

      I'm not sure. It's hard to be into literature and not like the best of Yeats' work. People take issue with his occultism and association with magic the The Golden Dawn. But these helped him refine his understanding of symbols and the sheer power of symbolic language to create affect and transformation in the human psyche (and beyond). He's a marvellous poet.

    There is one thing that drives me nuts about poems from some poets. This is the fact that some don't use punctuation. I usually have to guess where to pause, etc. I guess it can read the poem several times and find out for oneself. I think you might have spoken briefly about tempos in another video. I would say that this issue might be too obvious for another video, perhaps. 😉 I would love to go one of the events one day.

    • @nathanhassallpoetry
      @nathanhassallpoetry 4 дні тому

      @@TheSteinmetzen interesting! I think some poets master that, if they use meter, or spacing in creative ways. Have you read W.S. Merwin? His later work has no punctuation but it is excellent, each line is where the pause is. Where are you based? Would love to have you at an event.

    Great video! I deeply appreciate your balanced perspective on on this controversial subject. I am not worried about AI taking away the experience of poetry from me-or any experience for that matter which involves a conversation with my soul. Will AI soon generate lines to rival Blake or Rumi? I wouldn’t be surprised if it did. But does it matter? I don’t believe so. As you noted, poetry is more process than product. Only the inner journey enriches and bears fruit-consumption alone cannot nourish the soul. A flawless form, devoid of animating spirit, is no more than a gleaming lifeless object. What if AI floods the world with stunning representations indistinguishable from what most people call art today? Perhaps then we’ll rediscover the true value of art in returning to that transformative and nourishing internal process. I see that AI is and will be confronting us as humanity with what we deem valuable, and I welcome that. Let's hope that this will point us toward the real by disillusioning us from the representations.

      @@nathanhassallpoetry thank you ^^. I speak Dutch (from the Netherlands), so not very common/ no big reach on youtube for example if I would like to give it a try in Dutch. My English isn't fully up to English standards, I think and its way harder to be more playfull with meaning and words and still hit the right tone so people understand. So it feels a bit dounting as an absolute beginner. It sure has a good learning curve hihihi. Well the wrinkeld skin of old age does kinda look like bark sometimes, atleast to me. Especially when exposed to a harsh life filled with grieve, alcohol, drugs, smoking and alot of sunshine. The lines in the bark are unique to the tree and share a story, just like the wrinkles in ones face tell if you have laughed or cried more over a life time. This anology is also made in the movie phocohontas, grandmother tree. I kinda liked it, because wrinkles are a bit taboo in the west just like homeless people. The truth of life is litterly in our face standing before us and even when its hushed away it still excist. Society is detached of compassion, yet placed back into nature our disfunctional way is the only homeless one. Hahaha I don't blame you if you didn't read that into it! ;) I often get carried away in my symbolic language aspecially at night. 🤣 but hé it feels good and it gets me moving. 😅 Looking forward to your video's ^^

      I practice poetry by recording them. I totally get it that we have a feel where voice inflection is working or where it is not. I used to be very sloppy with not pausing at commas (sometimes I still catch myself). Also, I used to pronounce 'and' 'n' , until a friend told me that's what annoyed him about my readings. The ability to take criticism well, is very important in learning, in my opinion. ;)
