HAY-on-WYE | By Drone and on Foot | River Walk | Hay Town & Castle
This week’s van life adventure sees us take the Adria Twin Supreme to Hay-on-Wye where we take a stroll along the River Wye and explore the town and castle.
So join us as we see Hay by drone and on foot, take a walk along the River Wye to The Warren and share a few photographs along the way.
We loved The Bean Box a family run business situated on the banks of the picturesque river Wye, offering ample seating in the garden and at the water’s edge. The perfect location to refuel as you sit back and relax while you enjoy watching the wildlife.
www.hay-on-wye.co.uk/visit/the-bean-box
We stayed at Dark Orchard CL site, a quiet secluded off grid site with NO EHU, toilets or showers tucked away on the edge of Hay-on-Wye, yet only a 5 minute walk to the shops, restaurants, pubs and other amenities that this unique Welsh Marches market town has to offer.
The site does offer both fresh water, grey and black waste facilities.

Hay-on-Wye known locally as Hay is a market town and community in Powys, Wales.
With over twenty bookshops, it is often described as a "town of books"; it is both the National Book Town of Wales and the site of the annual Hay Festival.
About Hay Castle
For a thousand years, this remarkable structure has been part of the landscape. Part Norman, part Jacobean and part Victorian, Hay Castle has been a home to invaders, patriots’ citadel, country manor and a world-famous bookshop.
The remains of the castle include a four-storey keep and a beautiful arched gateway. The multi-gabled Jacobean manor was severely damaged by fire in 1939, and again in 1977. Remnants of the 18th century formal gardens and 19th century terraced gardens can still be seen.
The present day castle in the heart of Hay-on-Wye - sometimes called the Town of Books - site of the Hay Literary Festival, which for ten days every year attracts the most exciting writers, thinkers and artists to inspire and entertains hundreds of thousands of visitors.
Escaping Reality, a channel where we journey to many different locations across the UK and Europe from where we get outside, visit the local area, explore the landscape and experience the great outdoors - sharing our trips, travels and adventures through the medium of film, drone footage and photography.
Travelling in our Adria Twin Supreme 640 SLB.
We both enjoy a plant based diet and may take you with us to some of the vegan cafes, restaurants and eateries that we find on our trips.
Andrew has a passion for photography inspired by his late father who sparked his interest from a very early age. He also enjoys film making and videography which combined with the van adventures provides all the ingredients for the channel.
Filmed on 1st & 2nd July 2024

What a picturesque village, both by air and land. So many quaint little shops. With that many bookshops, JoAnna would have just been in heaven! She searches out book stores wherever we go! Loved the drone footage and image Andrew. It really shows off England's natural beauty. I love that Vicky seems to be in the videos more and more - how is she feeling about the YT life? Great video you two, we both really enjoyed it! Hope you are both doing well despite the troubles we've been seeing. Chat soon!

Many thanks Paul and it’s been an arduous week with the troubles but we’re away in the van at the moment so trying to not let politics, the troubles and the violence intrude on our time away - thanks so much for both watching and enjoying the tour. We spent a good few hours in the shops and really enjoyed perusing them all. Vicky is a little camera shy tbh so we shall see how it goes it future episodes ☺️ Really appreciate the comments and kind words and catch up soon 👍🏻👍🏻

An adventure packed episode this week. I think Oscar is safe from Kestrels, we did see a Goshawk in Northumberland recently, now they're huge, and I think anything rabbit sized would be prey. The dip in the Wye looked fun, trying to swim with a 360 camera looked a bit tricky though, I expect the water temp was very invigorating. So we know who the better driver is, but who is the better cook?

Thanks for watching Andy and it was a really enjoyable day or two and yes Oscar is safe from any predatory birds 🦅 Swimming one handed was a challenge but all in all good cause 🤣 I really enjoyed it and it was lovely and warm once you were in. Your question of course will make for future content in another episode so thanks for the idea 💡 All the best and look forward to more of Cornwall later👍🏻

Great video Andrew! Looked like a lovely riverwalk and a very nice day. We rented kayaks this summer for a paddle down our local river. We had a great time and think we will be buying our own - waiting to see if they go on sale over the winter. Loved all those shops in town, especially that iron monger shop you visited - I would love that type of store. And £10 per night sounds like quite a bargain for that beautiful location! Great to see you and Vicky and the dogs! Really enjoyed this adventure! Have a great weekend!

Sorry for the late comment on this one Andrew. I watched as soon as it was released and intended to leave a comment at the time but ..busy summer! Glad to have met Ralph & Oscar - what cuties they are and look to be an amazing part of the family! I understand Oscar lagging behind a bit. Our 14 year old loves to hike with us. He has the will but not the way anymore. I actually carry him in a doggy backpack now, letting him out from time to time to "hike" for himself. Dogs just make our lives so much better, don't they? Getting ready to watch the brand new video now!

Sorry for the late comment Andrew, have me mom here with us this summer and doing endless DIY projects! I'm always struck by the lack of trees on the hills and mountains over there but then you have a beautiful patch of forest. What a hike to that amazing waterfall! Well worth the effort to get there! Glad the weather cooperated a little bit for you both, definitely makes hiking a little more enjoyable - did sound a bit windy though. The goats were adorable. I think I would have spent my whole day with them! Fantastic video my friend, really enjoyed the look around! Hope you both are doing well, can't wait for the next installment! Take care pal!
