    Hello both, we are the Belgian couple at the table next to you on the Renea cruise. Nice video, especially the bit where you describe the guests on the ship 🙂. You are so right about the tour guide, what a great and smart guy he is ! Hope you guys are doing well and enjoying the travel. We've just got back home and restarted "normal" life. After Halong Bay, we flew to Cambodja, had an amazing time there, and then continued our journey to the Mekong delta area in South Vietnam. We will definitely check out your cruise videos. That sounds amazing! We are looking forward to visiting the Mekong Delta next time...if you were on a cruise you loved, please send us the name for our planning file. We're glad you enjoyed the video. The full Renea cruise video on Cruise Through Retirement will post on October 25th...we just finished and scheduled it. We had a great (expensive haha) time in Singapore and are now on the crossing back to California on the Carnival Panorama. Our Guam port was cancelled so 11 straight days at sea now! Wifi is proving challenging but otherwise a nice cruise. Let us know what you think of the Renea cruise video when you see it:)

    Plan carefully for next year if your time in Europe includes any visit to Italy. The Vatican in Rome will be celebrating it's 25 year Jubilee (when they open the Holy Door at St Peter's Cathedral). Normally Italy sees about 60 million visitors a year but they are estimating an additional 10 million visitors to visit during the year long Jubilee. Most of those will obviously end up in Rome at some point. We were looking at Carnival Miracle for a 13 day (Oct 26) Med Cruise, followed by a 14 day repositioning cruise (Nov 08) back to Tampa, Florida for next year, but we decided to postpone that itinerary until 2026 to avoid Rome during the Jubilee. My sister was also looking at an RCCL cruise out of Rome (also next year), but decided as well to skip Italy in 2025 and push it to 2026.

      That is excellent info we were not aware of! Thanks so much for sharing that as it will definitely impact where we want to embark/disembark on any med cruises we pick up and had been considering a time in Florence but may hold off on that until 2026.

    Great video! We are seriously researching full-time nomadic life and trying to understand what our life would be like. Your channel has been such a fantastic resource, thank you! Have you found it challenging to stick to a $4000/ mo budget?

    • @TasteLifeWithUs
      @TasteLifeWithUs День тому

      We're so glad to hear it is helpful! Definitely watch the videos in our budget playlist, especially the where we went, what we saw, what it cost ones. I think you'll see we struggle off and on. I would say overall, we are definitely maxing out the $4000 but over the course of a year staying pretty close overall....but that was also in cheaper areas and utilizing some pre-paid and lots of points. I think $5000 would be really comfortable for us so wishing that were our budget haha! But we are learning better how to keep costs down. I think if you don't drink alcohol at all you can do $4000 pretty easily--but that cut is a last resort for us as it's something we really enjoy. Definitely taking local cost of wine into consideration with future destinations! It definitely depends a lot on where you go and your travel style (we don't do hostels but there are those who live on a fraction of what we do). Longer stays are key.

    You showed a brief clip of the Marriott in DaNang… was there any places to eat close by (besides in the hotel)? We will be in DaNang for a week. We got an Airbnb close to the dragon bridge for cheap street food. We have 5 free nights at Marriott though.

      We were having a romantic, quick overnight so didn't explore the area at all. To be honest, it seemed kind of on the outskirts of town. But directly across the street from Marble Mountain if you want to go there. Maybe dig in to Google Maps. It's definitely worth a little resort stay though.

You mentioned not met any signs of war or anything there and I thought I would share with you if you’re a history buff. They actually have tunnels you can go through and lots of other stuff. Keep in mind on UA-cam videos and my research.

    We are planning our trip to Vietnam and we have a couple of weeks to spend in theDa Nang and Hoi An area. Since yall spent time in both places for a while, would you suggest a week in each or more time in one than the other? Also, if you were staying less than a week in Hoan, would you still suggest staying so far away from the main touristy kind of stuff? We are definitely coming for street food, of course the dragon bridge & water show. We plan to get lobsters where yall did (thx so much) & just see the old town/historical stuff. In DaNang we have Marble Mtn, BaNaHills (golden bridge w/hands). We have TONS of IHG points & were thinking of staying at voco Ma Belle in DaNang but are worried it may be too far from “stuff” there. Last question (& man do I appreciate the help), if we book a place w/o breakfast or kitchen, do you find eating out 2-3 times a day gets expensive overall or should we try to stay somewhere w/kitchen or at least breakfast? Thx so much!!!

      Thanks so much for watching! You didn’t mention the month you’re visiting so as to whether I’d stay in both, my answer is: if not too rainy a time of year, then yes I would stay in both. Our beach area in Hoi A was very different from Da Nang and much cooler than Old Town Hoi An so I’d just use grab when you want to go in….its close. Personally if we go back we‘ll stay in the same place in Hoi An in A Bang Beach and take a couple grabs (Uber here) to Da Nang to see the rest of what we missed. A Bang is a better beach if you want to go in the water (only certain tiny crowded areas allow swimming in Da Nang). That said, if you’re in the thick of rainy season you might be better off staying in Da Nang and taking grabs to Hoi An because Hoi An floods more…both in Old Town and where we stayed. And in Da Nang if it’s too rainy to go out you can get food delivered by grab. It should be noted that you can get excursions from one to the other-ie a tour or driver to Ba Na Hills from either (our video on it posts on Oct 14) or to do the cooking/boat etc tours in Hoi An from Da Nang. In fact anywhere you stay in Da Nang is far from other things….Marble Mountain, Ba Na, the big sky wheel and the dragon bridge all require a drive from anywhere other than right at one of them. And check on availability because just now not much is going on by the dragon bridge/da Nang downtown area (no water shows, puppets etc) because they seem to break for the season in early Sept. It is a big tourist area with a street market etc so plenty of places to eat though not sure if that may elevate the prices. Voco Ma Belle is not far from the A La Carte building where we stayed… in a cluster of more American chains. We didn’t walk all the way up there but it would be similarly far as we were. But it’s a cheap grab ride. While free breakfasts really help, the food is not too expensive if you eat at local places. Western/hotels vary…some still affordable some not. It depends on what you eat. Vietnamese food is inexpensive, delicious and not spicy. My fav is Banh Xeo (rice pancakes). We just ordered them on grab delivery last night including delivery and a tip totaling $5 for dinner. Vietnamese tend to eat lunch/dinner type foods for breakfast so we found pb&j at a mini grocery store (didn’t need a kitchen) and bought croissants from the cafe in our building about $2.50 for both of us for breakfast. We had a kitchen but never used it…cheaper to eat out and hard to find groceries we like to cook with. Of course it’s all subjective. Have a wonderful time!!

      @@TasteLifeWithUswe are leaving 1/8… we plan to spend 3 weeks in Thailand and from 1/31-3/4 in Thailand. We are going to DaNang, Hoi An, Hue then Hanoi. We are going to do a day trip to Nihn Bihn to do the river tour (supposed to be like HaLong Bay on land). I wanted to do an overnight cruise in HaLong Bay but since we will be there towards end of Feb I thought it may not be very warm & could be bad weather. There’s just do many things we want to see! We will definitely be back again. We plan to travel full time within a year or 2. Can you tell me about how much the grabs to Old Town is from your place in Hoi An (& your hotel in DaNang). I have found some cute (& good reviews in both that are in town, but not “right in it”. They range from $20-30/nt.

      Sounds like a great trip! I wish we’d had time to make it to Hue. We can’t wait to return and see more of Vietnam. Especially the north. It’s amazing. Grab into Old Town was $3 each way. A private driver to Ba Na Hills from Hoi An all day was $44, drivrr (set up by hotel so prob a little more than grab) from Hoi An to the Marriott across the street from Marble Mountain was $12 one way, same from Da Nang airport KA Villa. All excursions included pickup and dropoff. In Da Nang we just used grab yo the airport $3 which involved crossing the dragon bridge about halfway there.

      Hopefully you’ll love it! My good friend who loves it Da Nang and has spent tons of time here just messaged me: “Au Thoung, the tourist area south of where you guys were was much better! “ If we come back, I’ll look into that. Maybe it’ll help you. Truly so many factors go into whether anyone likes a place and all are subjective. Let us know how you like it once you visit!

    My ears perked up when you mentioned the Microsoft OneDrive cloud storage. I'm trying to figure out how to get all my photos and videos backed up before setting out on nomad life. I paid for Google Cloud storage, but think it was a mistake because transferring my photos and videos from the last 20 years from my desktop PC to Google Cloud was taking so long (as in days) and slowing my computer so much that I finally interrupted the transfer. I also tried OneDrive which seems smoother and faster. It created a folder on my computer to which I can copy folders with photos and videos from my PC, which then get backed up to the cloud. Was the ease of backing up your photos and videos a factor in going with OneDrive? Thanks 🙂

      @TasteLifeWithUs 17 днів тому

      I had already been a long time OneDrive user and to me it was more reasonably priced than iCloud and more reliable/trustworthy than some newer, smaller, cheaper cloud storage companies. It’s easy to access them online from any device (just be careful when you see it on your computer not to get confused whether those pics are still on the computer and delete them when really they were in OneDrive-I speak from experience). You can set your phone to automatically back up to one drive but must have the app open to backup-any time I open it, it backs up pics. Just do it frequently if you have big videos so it doesn’t take too long. or turn off sleep mode dmd let it run at night. It’s pretty fast and can just use Wi-Fi if you don’t want to use your data on backups. I hope it serves you well!

      @@TasteLifeWithUs Thanks for the tips. I didn't realize that I could set my phone to automatically back up to OneDrive. I'm currently using iCloud for that, but the problem is that it syncs the device with the cloud in the sense of automatically deleting from the cloud any photos/videos that I delete from my phone. I've searched on the internet for a way around this, but haven't found it, unless it's recently changed. So iCloud seems to only be useful as a back-up of my current phone contents, but not for long-term storage to allow me to delete items from my phone. I will look into linking my phone to OneDrive for a more permanent storage solution. I also plan to use a portable external drive as my backup to cloud storage. Thanks again for all the helpful information!

      Get a really good external drive like SAN disk. www.amazon.com/dp/B08HN37XC1/ref=cm_sw_r_as_gl_api_gl_i_dl_T40FN1T3FA9AA6HSES7E?linkCode=ml2&tag=yttlwutravday-20 and it’s 30% off today for Amazon prime days. We are affiliates so get a commission if you use our link. The first cheaper storage we used was difficult to use and then locked up and we lost all that data from months of travel. This one has been great, holds a TON! And is super easy to organize by folders etc. …we can transfer by cord from our MacBook Air or iPad. Not iPhone tho…have to airdrop to a c-cord device to then transfer. In all our research can’t find one than transfers direct from our iPhone.

    We are planning a trip to Vietnam in February. Do they do the lanterns on the boats on the river every night? I thought it was only during their festival and I am finding conflicting information online. It says it’s on February 11 and also on February 14. I just don’t wanna miss it.

    • @TasteLifeWithUs
      @TasteLifeWithUs 18 днів тому

      I was confused about that too before we got here. The lanterns are every night and vendors offering them are beside the river near the bridge where people are getting on. They will walk up to you then take you to a table to pay then give you over to a boat driver. We also specifically went back on a lantern festival night thinking it would be different/more but it was the same. All the locals kept telling us that and it was true. All I can think of is that maybe the dates coincide with moon cycles so it’s darker?🤷🏼‍♀️. Any night is fine and midweek might be less crowded which is nice. You want enough people for lots of lights but not jam packed boats. Be sure it’s fully dark and the right crowd level (later usually increases number of people). You’re off season so should have a wonderful, not too crowded time! By the way though, if it rains a lot the river floods at the street level especially on the mainland side-depending how much you might have to wait a day or two for it to go down, and/or visit from the island side.

    I agree! We always look for sofas with arms and a comfortable side chair, patio (if possible) and a separate bedroom (I get up earlier). In hotels, I go down to the lobby. I always look up the area on google maps before selecting too.

    That is such great advice about looking for whether a hotel has comfortable and inviting lounge space to provide more seating options. The comparison to the options in common areas on cruise ships is really clever! I hadn't thought of that. As someone with a couple of long-term orthopedic injuries, being able to change my seating position is crucial to my comfort and keeping pain away. If the provision of comfortable and inviting common areas makes hotels more viable for longer-term stays, then that means having the more comfortable bed that hotels often provide, compared to the board-like ones in many AirBnBs. Thanks for your very helpful insight on what to look for when booking.
