Early Music Missouri is an organization dedicated presenting and promoting Early Music concerts in the St. Louis region. We currently present six concerts per season focused on concerts featuring historically-informed performance and period instruments.

Early Music Missouri continued its 2023-2024 season with “The Baroque Organ,” featuring 17th- and 18th-century keyboard repertoire performed by David Sinden on St. Peter’s Episcopal Church’s two Mander organs.
In 1739, Johann Sebastian Bach (1685 - 1750) was a man at the height of his powers. Working in Leipzig, and having spent his whole life within the Lutheran Church, Bach composed the Clavier-Ubung III (sometimes called the “German Organ Mass”) as a personal musical and theological testament. One of the three settings of the Gloria in this monumental collection is a trio as ebullient and virtuosic as the writing in many of Bach’s trio sonatas. The three independent lines of the trio (right hand, left hand, pedal) take turns weaving in and around the beloved chorale melody “Allein Gott in der Höh sei Ehr.”
Since 2015, David Sinden has served as Organist and Director of Music at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in St. Louis, MO. An organist and conductor noted for his “centered leadership and solid musicianship,” David directs several vocal ensembles at St. Peter’s, regularly leading them through a wide swath of choral repertoire. His concert performances with the St. Peter’s Choir and orchestra include Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms (2017), Britten’s Ceremony of Carols (2017), the Duruflé Requiem (2019), Handel’s Messiah, Parts 1 and 2 (2015) and 3 (2018), Lou Harrison’s Easter Cantata (Midwest premiere, 2017), Haydn’s Te Deum in C and “Lord Nelson” Mass (2016), and Mondonville’s Dominus Regnavit (sung with the Kingsbury Ensemble, 2016). In 2019, David led the Choir in Aaron Copland’s unaccompanied masterwork In the Beginning. David directed the St. Peter’s Choir for their recording, Longing for Home (Regent Records, 2020), which has been met with widespread acclaim.
David holds the M.Mus. from Indiana University and B.Mus. from the Oberlin College Conservatory of Music. As a student at Oberlin, he was the Organist and Choirmaster for College Vespers. David undertook post-graduate study in organ improvisation with Jeffrey Smith at Indiana University and studied organ with Robert Brewer while attending the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Houston, TX.

For this particular piece the tuning is the 'old tuning'? (gdafcg) When I look for E. Gaultier tablature, I often find in description that it is for 11 string baroque lute, but here you seem to be playing the so called 'renaissance' lute
Very perceptive! Yes, "viel ton" for sure. There are a number of these early Baroque pieces (especially courantes) in the "old tuning"--Cherbury Lute Book, for example, has a number of these and some pieces appear in several manuscript collections. And some have concordances with other pieces in the "new tuning" (d-minor tuning) for 11-cs lute. In some ways, these French "Baroque lute" pieces in the old, Renaissance tuning are an important part of the transitional nature of lute music in the early 17th century--very much in the new style (style brisee, courantes, characteristic bass motion, etc.) but utilize the old tuning. Transitional in many ways. The Lute Society of America published a very nice edition of a half-dozen of these courantes in the old tuning. Peter Danner edited this little collection. Well worth a look.

Technically and musically it's of a very high level, but let's remember that 3 x 1 musicians at a distance take away the harmony and synergy of live, the soul of this piece is the osmosis of the whole playing in the same place ! Excellent performances and great content! Please note the term "port" is pronounced "poorsht" or "poersht," much like the auto "porsche," but with a "t" at the end. It is a one syllable word and is a "Gàidhlig" or Scottish Gaelic word.

After whom is the archlute model copied? Trying to find the original for ages!
Hi, Heiko--Thanks for your note and question. The archlute was built by Robert Lundberg in 1976-77. I purchased the instrument not too long ago and the instrument came with no original paperwork. For a short time, I owned 2 archlutes by Lundberg--this one and a less ornate one, also built in 1977 with nearly the same dimensions. Although I had copies of some original paperwork with the less-ornate instrument, it had no information about the original instrument from which Lundberg designed his. I am wondering if you might find some information in Lundberg's book on building historical lutes. luth.org/books/historical-lute-construction/ I'd be happy to take pictures and make measurements, if that will help you. Dr. Metz performed on a recently constructed fortepiano by Paul McNulty who modeled this instrument on extant fortepianos by Anton Walter, a leading builder of keyboard instruments in the late-eighteenth-century. This new instrument features a case in patterned Nigerian mahogany with Empire-period decoration in gold leaf.
