Love that you are critical in your review pointing out important details or lack of attention to detail by the maker. Too many wetshave content creators are scared to be critical about products. As far as adjustables I have a G2 Gillette Fatboy, Rockwell T2SS, Yaqi Avanti (Merkur Progress clone in SS) and a QShave Futur clone.
Hi John! Good to see the origin vid! Looking forward to watching them in order till present 😅
@jaytekkenx haha! You have 93 more videos to watch 🤣🤣. If you include the ones I’ve made for The razor company probably around 100! Didn’t realize that. Enjoy the content.
@Stubblemeetssteel let's not forget the Leaf Thorn vid 😂 I purchased one recently (Fig color) after seeing a vid from you on the product page. Haven't shaved with it yet but looking forward to trying a SE 👍 I'll have to check out the vids on The Razor Company channel as well 😅
@@JayTekkenXhaha 😂 the leaf is a good into into SE. I like that you can use any brand blade with them.
All these open comb videos made me want to try a new open comb. I'm tempted to try the Fatip OC, I know it's very efficient but a lot of people say that with the blade clamping, rounded teeth and the right angle, it can be quite smooth.
@saguarosmart4100 I was very underwhelmed with Fatip. They require careful manual blade alignment & the finish on mine looked like they dropped it in sand then plated it anyways 🤣🤣 I just watched a video of sig solo and his Fatip had the same crappy finish. Seems like they have 0 quality control. Which is ironic because they claim the razors are hand made. So what they just don’t care what they look and fit like once built? 🤣 Mine was the closed comb slant. It had a very narrow shave angle that was harder to maintain then other slants I’ve used & I hated the blade alignment issue so I sold it.
@@Stubblemeetssteel Yeah that's what I heard. Basically If you're lucky to get a good one, the piccolo open comb is a nice aggressive razor (a bit less than R41 but still very high efficiency) but lots of people get lemons or at least disappointing pieces. As you've said, It's a bummer because otherwise they offer a full brass razor for cheaper than some brands sell zamak razors. I might have to splurge for a Lambda Ares if I really want a top quality and enjoyable open comb.
Great review! I really appreciate the comparison. As you know, I have both of these (Shave Dad pics) and have only shaved with the long comb. Very efficient! My dad always thought the short comb shaved better for him, but he was a 5 o'clock shadow by noon kind of guy. I don't have a beard nearly so coarse or dense, so it will be fun to compare!
@jeffdenker145 glad you enjoyed it. As you will find out every razor is different for each user. I prefer the LC but others like the SC. See what you like. As long as you have fun that’s all that matters. They are great counter top conversation starters.
I'm blown away how smooth, comfortable, and efficient the Feather blade is I used (1st time) this morning. My best wet shave. I used PAA cube 2.0, & Proraso green. I moved extra slow during the shave, and it felt like no blade was in the T2. I don't remember much audible feedback, like other blades have. For me, a wonderful blade, if I keep respecting the sharpness. I don't like the wax dots on the feather blade however, made it difficult to open.
Great video very informative and interesting 😁🤔😊
@tomsmith522 thank you. Glad you enjoyed it. I also have a similar video with a $40 budget.
Great shave John! Regarding Bay Rums, I think I would like Gabel's Bay Rum because I love forward scented clove aftershaves. Clubman is still my favorite. I just wish it have more benefits and longevity to it like the artisan products have in their Bay Rums like B&M, Stirling, or PAA. PAA is a beast with their Bay Rum lineups. Atomic Age Bay Rum is awesome and Capt'n Smythe's Bay Rum and Leather Aftershave/Cologne is amazing!
Hey thank for the video. I bought an open comb and basically came to the same conclusion as you. Think the open comb has a bit more blade feel. I still think the syntesi is the better option even better than a Rockwell 4 plate
@garyseymour1617 I agree! The Rockwell 4 plate is a tad much some days for me. The Syntesi feels less dangerous and as efficient if not more. Glad you saw the video.
Nice shave John
Nice shave John. What would you give the styletto on a Rockwell scale?
@bendawson4336 I would say the Styletto feels like a Rockwell 3 plate but has efficiency of a 3.5. I find it gets me bbs easier then a #3 plate and it’s probably very close if not even to a 4 plate efficiency wise
Catching up on videos.... Great comparison shave, John! Makes me want to keep an eye out for the Overlander on sale somewhere this coming Black Friday so I can do my own comparison with my Apex. The Filoso is definitely the way to go. Blade of choice 🙂
@samhillanbrand6291 if you want a mild razor that’s still very efficient & let’s you buff with ease the Overlander is the razor too beat! Some vendors have them in stock with the “standard” Overlander style handle. If you aren’t a picky then you don’t have to wait for 2 months 🤣🤣
Cool shave, this was fun
Very nice shave and comparison! Lately I'm also on Aluminum razor kick. Before I was gravitating towards SS heavier razors, now it's the other way around. There's something about the AL razors and how easy and comfortable they feel.
@shaveandtell I agree totally. 👍
Again a nice comparison! I have tried the Clog pruf V1 and the G-Bar. In my mind, the CP was basically a G-Bar with more blade feel but not much more efficient. Given this, is the Featherweight V1 worth getting?
@konap7 the gen 1 clog Pruf is pretty rough. I much prefer the one with the dimples in it for less blade feel smoother. That said while I do like the clog Pruf it still could be more efficient too me. To answering your question I find the Gen 1 featherweight with no lines on the top cap by the opening tab to be the best all around Gem there is. It’s hands down the smoothest but I also find it the most efficient for how smooth. Maybe the Gem Jr, 1912 or micromatic OC are a tad more efficient….but they have way more blade feel and not nearly as smooth! I find the funny shaped handle of the featherweight very ergonomic and feels good shaving.
@Stubblemeetssteel Welp, time to spend some time on eBay then... 😅
@konap7 haha! I try to stay off eBay. Dangerous. The featherweight is a must have if you like any other gems.
@@Stubblemeetssteel I really like the Streamline and I'm looking for a 1st gen Damaskeene (rounded top cap and heart shaped cutout)
@konap7 which streamline do you have? I have a damaskeene for sale let me see which cutout it has.
Nice comparison! I really like your head-to-head videos, they are always informative. How does the GS Bayonetta compare to the GC .84 in terms of comfort, efficiency and ease of use (angle etc)?
@konap7 glad you are enjoying the content. I personally found the GC 84 just too mild to get bbs for me. The bayonetta is more efficient but also more blade feel and more aggressive. However I recently tried a filoso blade in the bayonetta and it’s great how. Takes that dangerous edge down a bit so it don’t feel like it wants to bite me so easily. Vs the GC 84 I tried my sharpest blades and it’s closed to BBS but just doesn’t get it for me personally. The GC 84 is smoother and more forgiving. I find both razors easy to find the ideal cutting angle. The bayonetta u can smooth out by riding the top cap more. The GC seems to feel the same regardless of angle input. I’m debating selling my GC but I only have the .68 plate. The .84 plate was a loan.
@Stubblemeetssteel Well I shave every 3-4 days usually due to my slow beard growth. I saw on the RazoRock home page that the .84 GC is ranked right under the Hawk V3 standard, which is really mild imo. I really enjoy both the Overlander and the Blackbird and was basically wondering if there is anything that is more efficient than the Overlander but less prone to irritate than the BB. Many have pointed out the two razors I mentioned as a more efficient alternative to the Overlander. What's your input?
@@konap7I have not tried the blackbird so hard to comment there. I found the v2 hawk a tad aggressive for how efficient it is. I couldn’t see finding the v3 mild. The shield AC I find smoother then the hawk v2 and more efficient as well for single edge. For me the GC 84 is not as efficient as the overlander. The Overlander gets me much better bbs than the 84 did with any blade I tried. For me the bayonetta is more efficient then the GC 84. I would suggest the bayonetta or muhle rocca for medium aggressive razors that are still smooth. If you can handle the v3 hawk you should have no problem with those 2 razors.
@@Stubblemeetssteel Really appreciate your input here. It's been a good while since I used the Hawk V3 standard plate. But I shaved with the A plate recently and I could buff quite a bit with it, no problem
A great companion! I have the stainless Apex, but am definitely planning on grabbing one in AL… two incredible razors for sure though. Have a great rest of the week!
@jmac thanks buddy! Good to see you here. I recently got a B plate Karve CB with the open comb B plate. It’s a tad much I think I would enjoy the B plate closed comb more. I’m worried the C plate may be too much…
@ you’re welcome! Oh man, those plates are my jam.. I have both Band C safety bar and open comb. C plate is surprisingly smooth, especially on 2 days growth.
@jmac the Overlander is just perfection settings wise. I found the OC b plate irritated my neck but also did not get me bbs vs the Overlander does no problem. I watched your comparison of them so on the fence if the smoother B closed bar will let me buff more without irritation like the overlander allows or I should try the C plate and hope is less aggressive then the B open comb?
@ hmmmmm yeah that’s a tough one to answer to be honest. I don’t think the closed comb C plate is any smoother than the B OC, I mean it’s smooth… but definitely going to feel more blade with the C Plate. The Christopher Bradley really ks its own animal and hard to directly compare to the Overlander, which like you is my go too razor now.
@jmac the overlander is officially my goat. It’s perfection in razor form. That said let’s go the other way. You seemed to feel the B closed comb CB was close effeciency wise to the overlander? I think the OC feeling just made me apprehensive to blade buff more as I do with the overlander to get bbs
Where did you get the blades from?
@gotobecrazy a buddy sent me some to try. I noticed on their website they were local too me so I got some at their warehouse. You can order online at filosobarberbrand.com If you want to try some email me your ship too & I’ll send you some if u are in the USA . My email is my channel name @Gmail dot com
Another great review! I agree about aluminum. It's a fine material, no need to be snobby about it! And the lightness can be a great feature - easier to hold, especially upside down.
Amazing shave, love the comparison brother. Keep them coming. Both are amazing razors.
Do the blade exit from both side of the cap? If you replace the alliminium handle with a stainless steel handle, so something more heavy,do you think that head remain easy to use as with its alluminium handle?
@nonsolorasatura9093 I will double check but I’m almost positive the blade tabs are covered. I have not changed to a heavy handle with this razor but I have with other razors. I don’t find it makes a big difference. Not as much as blade choice can make. Aluminum razors don’t glide as easy as stainless steel. Especially if the stainless is polished. So if shield made a polished version then maybe that vs aluminum would feel a little different.
Congrats on 1 year!
@ivermec-tin666 thank you for all that info. I enjoyed reading all that! I’ve read about them buying out autostrop😂 Makes sense on the tooling variances vs modern standards. To this day these are some of the best OC I’ve ever used. I just got a used Karve Christopher Bradley with B plate open comb. These 90 yr old Gillettes are much nicer shaves! Thanks for the reply.
I had both of these and sold them on ebay. I must of owned 30 different types from New to Vintage. No matter what blades I used, The DE's just made my face irritated and made me break out. Today ,I use Schicks, Gems and Parker SE's. My face now is 100% clear.
@anthonu-ju6go all that matters is you found what works for you! I love single edge. Gem Featherweight, 1924 shovelhead, Gem clog pruf peerless, Shick G series injector & Shield AC are my favs. Be sure to watch my Gem playlist series & Gem 1 hr special feature video
Congratulations on your 1 year and Happy Birthday to your daughter🥳🥳 You always have had great content and the comparison shaves really help someone like my😂 determine if a certain razor is possibly right for me. Prayers this evening for your buddy, Chad and his newborn son. 🙏Hopefully all goes well tomorrow with the surgery. I just can't imagine.😢 I am in your boat where a 3/4 on a Rockwell is enough so I imagine I would be a 1 on this Blackland's safety plate, which I would not be happy with because I wouldn't feel I was getting my moneys worth plus the blade tabs. Yikes! A cool shave comparison might be with the OG Gem. Imho🙂👊
Great shave and review! Congratulations on the 1 year! 🎉
Happy YT1 year Anniversary💪🏼 Well wishes for the Family🙏🏼 Happy Birthday to your daughter🥳
@the_one_baba Thank you 😊 Thanks for watching.
Cool review John.
Congrats on the 1st anniv. on YT. Best of health to your extended family. Happy birthday to your daughter. I needed to replace my blade on my DE and thought, why not experiment and add another shim to the one I installed after watching your video. The improvement was so drastic, the razor became quiet, the smoothness, efficiency and just about every aspect improved (coincidently, is the x3 factor of a GEM compared to regular DE)...It's probably down to the angle, gap and the pressure grasping the cutting blade, providing more rigidness to a larger area of the blade.
@aovint63 thank you. Glad you had fun with the shim trick. It’s fun to experiment a little. The results are always entertaining. Thanks for watching.
Awesome anniversary wishes 💐 where is the giveaway 😂
@carzone2021 😂😂 I was caught off guard as I thought it was December. I want to give away a nice selection of stuff. I need to round up some stuff to give away. Maybe I’ll do it at 100 videos as that’s coming up soon too!
Hey, thanks for your videos. Can you compare and contrast the syntesi vs the open comb gladiolus?
@garyseymour1617 that’s an interesting idea! I had not considered doing that comparison. I would say they are pretty close as far as how aggressive they both are. That should make a fun video. I’ll see if I can’t do that next week.
Do you feel on your skin the scalopped plate of the Yaqi? Or the angle of usage avoid it? For easy to use, depth of the shaving and smootheness how it compare with the Syntesi? Or other similar flat head?
@nonsolorasatura9093 both have scalloped bars but no I don’t really notice or feel that. The yaqi is more blade picky. It’s a bit rough until I tried a filoso blade then it made it much smoother shaving. The alpha for me is smooth but has those moments if feels like it could bite with careless technique. The yaqi is more forgiving as far as doesn’t feel like it wants to bite like the alpha. Syntesi is smoother and nicer shaver than both of these for me.
Great review John
Have you tried the Apex stainless steel, either with the standard plate (.7 mm gap) or plus plate (.99mm gap)?If so, would you prefer to have the SS version or the aluminum version?
@jeffking2214 I personally have not but for reason. The person who suggested the apex Al too me bought an apex and a Kopperkant after that. The kopperkant in the .99 was way too much blade feel to us both. The apex SS they still offer in the .70 gap so he got that. He said it’s more aggressive & harder to work with than the apex Al. The heads seem not exactly the same despite having the same gaps.
I really like that you compared these two razors and how you went about explaining it all. Whenever I'm looking for a specific razor vid, usually i see a video from you pop up on the search results. Looking forward to going though all your content ✌️
@jaytekkenX glad you are enjoying the content! I have tried to organize things into playlists so use those to help your searches. Don’t forget to like & subscribe to see new content when it hits.

Have you tried the King C Gillette blades from china, sharp as feather only 10 times smoother. I’m getting about a weeks worth of comfortable shaves out of them. Great video by the way.
@jackkeller737 I have not tried one but I was sent one as a sample. I’ll try it! Thanks.
It is important to keep in mind that these are roughly 90 year old tools. Machine tollerances in 1929 were not tight by modern standards, so there was presumably some variation in these products when new. After 90 years of use and abuse, those variations would grow larger, I assume. There are enthusiasts who actually go to the extent of collecting a handfull of each of these razors and performing a runoff in their shave den to weed out the keeper from the pack. Those who do so, tend to prefer the SC because it is perceived to be smoother than the LC. The LC and SC are very close in efficiency. Of course, YMMV. The New was launched in concert with the newly redesigned modern form factor Gillette Blue razor blade as their 1904 patent was expiring. Gillette lost a copyright infringement lawsuit with Auto-Strop, their lead competitor, and the two companies merged. So, these are the first razors distributed by Gillette to use these modern DE blades legally. The key changes in DE blade technology since then has been the use of thinner steel, of stainless steel over carbon steel, and of a variety of coatings applied to the cutting edges. IIRC, these razors were never paired with ball end handles. They came with common bar handles. I prefer to swap out the common bar handle for the ball end from a 1950's USA Tech razor, or a Durham Duplex handle. This balances the head neatly. The common bar handles are hollow and light weight. Yes, the top caps are made of copper, and the rest in brass. The entire razor was given a wash in gold and then finished with shellac, just like the earliest Gillette Razors from 1904 -1921. Unfortunately, these gold washes were very thin, and wore off over the years. Gillette didn't move to proper electroplating until the 1940's. These were available with a nickle plate, but it seems to have not been very common. Who tends to like these razors? People who shave daily. They paired well with a sharpish blade. I like the Nacet or Wizamet in this razor. These are sharpish and smooth coated blades. The combination makes for a medium efficiency mildish and fairly forgiving razor suited to normal sensitivity skin and a graying beard that has become far tougher than it was when I was younger. The New SC is my goto for taking down the Winter beard when the days start to grow longer again. The New really was a great leap forward in the industry. These are very usable even today.
Interesting, I wonder what you'd think of the Merkur 15c / 41c. It's supposed to be the OC version of the 34c and be fairly mild. I know Heiko who loves mild razors had tried one and said he liked it. I think you might also enjoy the Razorock GameChanger 68 in OC. I have a buddy that let me try both the 68OC and 84OC, I thought the 68 is efficient enough in OC and very comfortable. Since OC tends to amplify blade feel, the 84 OC was a bit much for me with such a gap, I was on eggshells most of the shave and had a couple small weepers. I suspect it's mostly due to my unfamiliarity with it, towards the end I noticed It can be tamed quite a bit with a shallow angle but still, it's one of those razors that requires a light touch.
@saguarosmart4100 yes I’ve considered trying a GC open comb. I was leaning more towards 84 OC but maybe not after what you said. I hate hoping to find the right plate…. I’ll probably just sell it 🤣
Great video and I like your opinions because they reflect accurracys. You could be right with your selection of the 2 razors for smoothness. Gillette produced a lot of open long comb razors (easy to find on Ebay)because they where great sellers, I tried buying a short comb years ago and there just isn't many out there (folks might not of been interested!) IMO.
@ronr8800 the short comb are not as common for sale it seems. Thanks for watching.
I picked up what I believe to be a variety of Gillette New Deluxe at a Flea Market this past spring. Seems to be rare find lol, forgot the exact model. It has like a thicker bottom than the New Short/Long comb
@@Gotobecrazy It sounds like you are describing the Gillette The New DeLuxe. The DeLuxe has a heavy head and a wonderful feel in the hand. It is significantly more efficient than The New LC or SC.
Many collectors favor the SC over the LC. This may contribute to the rarity of the SC on auction sites. The LC appears to have been much more common in their day. I personally prefer the SC. It is smoother, IMO. They are very close in efficiency.
@ivermec-tin666 sounds promising! I haven’t tried it. I’ve tried a British aristocrat and that was pretty efficient for how smooth. Reminded me of a Shick krona
Beautiful shaving bowl!
@danielholiday-z5n thanks! It’s a sharpe shaver brand. Only $25 for most of them and many colors options. They are the best bowl I’ve used to whip up a great lather.
@@Stubblemeetssteel Thanks for the information, I’ll be picking up one of these down the road! I’ve tried a few of the Amazon options out there, they don’t even compare, and were twice as expensive.
I can't even get to using my Karve Overlander lol. Just received the aluminum Razorock Cyber razor (medium), should be getting my shield titanium set soon.
@gotobecrazy can’t wait to hear how u like the cyber! Is it Henson like with that locked in head angle is my question & is it nice ATG mustache pass? Lastly is it too mild or get it bbs easy enough? I used the overlander again. It’s very hard to put down. Next level good!
@Stubblemeetssteel Yes it has that locked in angle, I think it's efficient. I need to use a a few more times and use different blades to have a opinion. The head is like a cross between the Yates winning and Henson. It looks like it puts more bend in the blade.
@@Stubblemeetssteel Funny my Shield titanium came today. Have the 1.15 gap with .12 exposure head and dual head 0.95 sb .05 exposure / 1.25 OC .25 exposure . The 1.15 head doesn't have blade posts but it's clamps down really well. I think that covers different aggression levels lol. I really liked the .95 / 0.05 in the aluminum
@gotobecrazy ok times up how’s the cyber for RR???
@@Stubblemeetssteel It's okay, I'm not really wowed by it lol. It's head design is like a cross between the Henson and winning. I like the Winning razor better maybe because of the stainless steel. I have yet to try it with some sharper blades
That orange/black combo looks so next level🚀 Got the Knopf Pommel black handle/green baseplate for my OL. Would like to see a Henson ++ comparison
@jjtt9789 thanks! I’ve very happy with how the color& handle came out. Black & green should look great too! I don’t have a Henson anymore or I would do that.
Great shave, looking forward to the next comparison with the Apex! I love MacDuff's Hallowed Sky and I'm confident that if you decide to move it out of your collection it won't be hard. Cheers!
@shaveandtell a friend who likes floral scents got it off me. Thanks for watching!
Aluminum Overlander is a great razor
Nice shave John. That is one sweet razor.
Nice shave John. Have you tried the open comb version of Yaqi final cut?
Thanks for the excellent content, I am torn between buying the goodfella smile syntesi or the yates America stainless steel, can you please tell me which one you like better? Thank you
@andresfelipetorresarevalo8150 I feel they are very close. The syntesi has a more conventional shave angle. The Merica wants the handle very parallel to the face. The syntesi is smoother and more efficient too me.
@Stubblemeetssteel thank you!! you are very kind!!! ❤️ I like all your videos, you are the best.
Glad you are enjoying the content.
No need to worry about Gillette or non-Gillette. So very many different double edge blades products! One can possibly buy several DIFFERENT individual samples none of which need be Gillettes, and find at least a few which work very well for the person.
@10floz30minutes I’ve tried countless. Most suck 😂 Willy’s, filoso so far have been standouts. Some Bic, some personnna, 7amsharp, some treet. I have some. I’m just picky and always looking as u said lots of options!
Hey buddy I've been looking for a channel that loves mild razors and ive finally found you. Im fairly new to the wet shaving world, as you can probably guess i made the switch from cartridge and jumped on to the henson hype. Im using the henson mild version which is not bad but I find it still leave's stubble behind after one pass as thats all i can manage one pass because of the sensitivity of my skin. Can you recommend recommend a razor for me that will cut the stubble a little closer for a more cleaner looking shave. Thanks
@samsungalaxy-be9oe 1 pass bbs is very hard to pull off unless u have very mild hair….or a aggressive razor which usually doesn’t work well for sensitive skin. The skin does get more used to shaving but a mild razor is probably your best bet. Aylesworth apex aluminum, Karve overlander, goodfellas styletto would be my top non adjustable pics for you. You may be better off with an adjustable razor so u can adjust as needed to find the effeciency you are after by changing the base plate etc. I would suggest a Rockwell 6c or superior cuts 3D razor. The superior cuts it’s very smooth and forgiving even on the highest gap 1.4 plate he sells! I love the 1.0 plate but I would suggest getting the .4/.6/.8 plates to start and if u want more try the next set. For me the 1.0 /1.2 are still very smooth but high efficiency.
@@Stubblemeetssteelthank you for replying, for the last hour or so I've been checking out your videos and man you have some great razors, it's so hard to choose from. I want to try them all what you use, You have a beautiful collection. The bbs I'm trying to get from one pass will not happen like you say and you are right, I'm just dreaming if I think that will happen, the Henson mild I'm currently using and I've tried feather blades in it by the way, Kai blades, astra platinums but no matter what blade I seem to use it's still leaving a lengthy stubble behind if that makes sense. I'm too scared at the minute to try across the growth and against the grain passes because I know if I do when my stubbles starts growing back a day or so later I will end up with bumps and ingrown hairs
The very typical strong recommendation is Mild Razor and SHARP Blade. Also, one should expect to make two passes using lather, and then a few smaller partial passes to adequately shave off stubborn remaining extents of whiskers. TWO passes should be ideal.
@samsungalaxy-be9oe I would suggest a face lather and try going with the grain twice and see how that does. If still stumble try with the grain and 2nd pass across. See how that does. Lastly try with and against the grain. You will find your magic combo. I can not get bbs in 1 pass with any razor or blade combo. I have to go ATG on my neck to get bbs. With mild but efficient razors I can do that no problem. More aggressive razors old irritate me more.
