    I really appreciate this podcast Love Dr Heiser my next book is unseen realm I haven’t read yet . I was raised lds , knew something was off my whole life couldn’t put my finger on any one thing at the time . When I stepped away a whole new work opened up and the Bible has always been my guide I do believe in the one true God of Isreal . Rebuilding my faith has been a challenge but every day we have the opportunity to learn and grow and become better Great podcast , thank you so much ♥️

    I see a limitation in Apologetics when it focuses solely on intellectual arguments, as the root of many issues people face is a heart matter , not just a lack of understanding. God is more of a heart surgeon than a brain surgeon. While the two are connected-and this is why Apologetics can be helpful-we must be cautious not to reduce it to a ping-pong debate that strokes egos but leaves deeper issues unaddressed. In Parallel Faith, David Boden speaks about purposeful engagement as a key part of discipleship. For me, this means being attuned to when someone reveals their heart issues. For example, Caleb stepped out of his head and into his heart when he admitted, 'To be honest, I have a selfish desire to do my own thing .' This openness presented an opportunity to explore what he meant and to speak into his heart issues as we partner with God. who does the heart surgery. It was encouraging that caleb felt safe enough to share honesty, and such moments remind me to listen for and engage with the heart the issues people reveal while approach with their head and desiring to stay intellectual territory. Transformation happens when we go beyond winning debates and instead meet people where they are at, this I feel can overcome the limits of Apologetics. Thank you both for allowing us to sit in. Blessed. 🙏

    I just watched this video, and wanted to comment on the “cock crowing”. Fr. Dwight Longenecker indicates that from his research, the Roman guards marked the end of each watch of the night with a trumpet blast. The gallicinium (cock crow) was the name given to the end of the 3rd watch (3 am). If this is the case, God didn’t even have to trigger a rooster to crow, but Jesus was telling Peter that within 3 hours he would deny the Lord three times.

    On principle I would be afraid to claim to have DISCOVERED something NEW theologically AS IF for 2000 years everybody else has been wrong or unenlightened. Jesus would never let that happen. ALL THE SAME I BELIEVE IF SOMETHING IS NOT IN THE BIBLE CHUCK IT.

    At one point you said we don't believe in absolute divine simplicity. With respect, I recall sts John Damascene and Gregory Palamas talking about it. I could be wrong, but I think it would be more accurate to say we don't believe God is a Thomistic pure act, because we certainly don't believe the the Divine Essence is compound.

    Faith and works go hand in hand, not rocket science . IOW you can't have one without the other. Having said that you can't be justified by works alone, only the work of the cross. Jesus said if you abide in the vine you'll bear much fruit."

    When you say that in 1:30:23 there are multiple stories attesting to the myth of the great flood, you have got to first try to judge whether they could all be attesting to something thats physically naturally possible. Why could all these ancient civilizations have flood myths? Could it be because they all exist on river deltas where flooding happens periodically and people could imagine a great flood kilometers high that wipes everything away? Or do we have to immediately assume that such an absolutely massive world flood (that isn't physically plausible or even possible with the amount of water on earth today) had to have happened? Stick to the likely before going to the unlikely.

    1:13:25 Paul is writing to the Church of Rome because the Jews recently had been expelled from Rome (Priscilla and Aquilla in Acts are Jews who were expelled from Rome) and now these Jews are beginning to return to Rome now that they are allowed and the mainly Gentile Church is trying to figure itself out now that Jews are returning, saying they need to be circumcised etc

      The closing paragraph of his dissertation: “The concept [that we go to church to worship God] lacks the support of the Christian Scriptures. As a closer examination of the evidence reveals, it seems likely that the Apostle Paul would say, ‘Christians do not go to sacred buildings to make offerings to their God; Jews and pagans did that. Christians gather to build up one another’.” This is one of countless examples of the Jew=pagan conflation we referenced ( 38:08 )

    Are we limited to what we see in the NT then? If something is absent, then we aren’t allowed to incorporate it into our gatherings? Our lives as Christians? For example Sunday school isn’t in the NT? The sinners prayer? Is worship absent from edification or is it presupposed? Wadsworths work is a retelling of 70s-80s small group theology that has been well documented in English literature and distributed all over the globe. This is nothing new. The function and purpose of house churches in China. Cell churches in Asia and Africa. The historical documentation of the first 300 years of Christian history demonstrating that it was small home churches that spread across the Empire focused on teaching and building one another up while sharing in a common meal. He makes some interesting points but it’s nothing new. Plus, he misunderstands the relationship between what Christians refer to as the Old Testament (erroneously) and the New Testament (again erroneously) thinking in error that one set of writings make the other obsolete. They do nothing of the kind. The text itself is NOT the Covenant. In addition Paul’s Corinthian correspondence was written to a single church. We do NOT find any of the issues he is addressing there in any other letter. It is unique. His Church of Christ, Restorationist background and bias is clearly showing. 😢

    Just started watching, but Not having any idea what the doctor’s argument was and not having understood what it was from the last video with him, I’m hoping this helps me understand. All I got in the comments from others was “watch his videos.” Well, if the argument can’t be summarized in a few sentences (not the evidence, just the argument), for sure it must be massively confusing. The only thing I have been able to get is he doesn’t believe that the church gathering is for the purpose of worship. Then what does he think the Eucharist is?? Anyhow, looking forward to this and keep up the good work ❤

    • @churchkidpod
      @churchkidpod 17 днів тому

      In brief, here it is: * the early church didn’t describe their meetings as “worship” or “services” * they saw their meetings as informal “gatherings” * the primary focus of their meetings was horizontal edification, not vertical His core issue seems to be a reaction against ritual, ceremony, formality, and structure in gatherings of believers. He mentions often that the word worship is not used in reference to what Christians do in their assemblies ( 2:09:04 ). By this use of the word “worship”, he means formalized ceremonial activities that are oriented toward God. His target appears to be the Jewish Temple, cultic, and ritual worship: offering of literal sacrifices and bodily prostration ( 2:18:09 ) In our conversation video with him , they/we dug into the Lord’s Supper in the latter portion. He admits that it has a vertical dimension, but refuses that it is a sacrifice because he sees it through the Reformation paradigm that calling it a sacrifice means re-crucifying Christ over and over again.

      @ thank you so much for that. I was on the right track then, but it just seemed so ridiculous what he claims I wanted to be sure considering what archeological finds have revealed regarding home churches, especially recently. They were formal spaces only used for that purpose, had alters, etc. Including the one on the news recently regarding the inscriptions on the floor stating Jesus is God. That one is in Israel and dates as early as 230 AD. Clearly there was formality and ritual.

    I'm further along in the program, with discussion about who God is and the begotten Son. I struggle with the idea of trying to contain God within the way he expresses himself to the physical world. He is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, yes, but I have to believe that he's mind bogglingly more complex than a physical mind can grasp, and than what he presents of himself to us to help us know him.
