DANG i was complaining about region and district audition music and the 8th graders told me the clarinet lyrical and technical were the same as the high school all state music. 32nd notes at 132 bpm doesnt sound too bad now

Very nice. What makes or breaks a performance of this piece is how the strings handle the four half-notes at the very beginning. Yes, they are marked with a single "slur" but they have to be projected to the listener AS four notes. This group does it perfectly! Very few others that I've sampled on youtube seem aware of the challenge (or able to meet it).

I know you are a student at the Curtis Institute, however I’m kind of hoping you already knew this etude, or had spent more than a day practicing this etude because I spent the past six hours yesterday practicing this etude only to play through the entire piece at half the tempo haha.

I'm an amateur pianist in the midst of studying this piece. I have tons of respect for this performance and for this arrangement for clarinet. This is such a beautiful and dramatic reading, as well as of course incredibly skilled. Difficult as this piece is on keyboard, I can only imagine the challenge on clarinet. I was prepared for a lot of simplification, but what amazed me was how much of the piece is playable on the instrument and how it remains every bit in the spirit of the original.
