Thanks for watching Aundrea! Sherisse's full-length masterclass on the website looks like it will be great as well -- www.jazzcomposerspresent.com
occult knowledge. I guess sus chords are always "going somewhere" (the tonic is seriously unmoored) and the bass is the only clue that might indicate where that might be, which might be a very odd place, and the "ugliness" comes from realising that, despite the confidence of the performance, we're not going somewhere friendly: "Damn, the car broke down and now it's raining. Didn't we see a castle back there?"
Occult indeed, what a fascinating description Brennan! We're looking forward to Sherisse exploring it further on the full-length masterclass -- www.jazzcomposerspresent.com

I had lots of fun in my jazz singing life writing arrangements of standards. Reharmonizing, groove stuff, much like what you are doing here. So many standards are wonderful compositions, but they get tiresome when always done the same way. I love what you did with Night and Day. Of course when you do interesting stuff with a tune, you'd better write a really clear chart so the reading won't wreck the gig for the band. (teehee)
Thanks for watching Stella! We really enjoyed Peter's full-length event on the website -- www.jazzcomposerspresent.com/archives

Thanks for watching Eugenio - Rich is such a beautiful writer! Tons of great full-length events from him on the website -- www.jazzcomposerspresent.com/archives
Very interesting video! Having the trombones arpeggiate the chords like that is nice! I'm thinking what he could have come up with if writing for an additional mellophone section (a la Stan Kenton) - lush sounds for sure!
Hi Eugenio - thanks for watching! A mellophone section would certainly add another rich layer on top of the arrangement. We're excited for Mike's upcoming full-length Listening Session on the website -- www.jazzcomposerspresent.com
I was fortunate enough to attend the last Lake Placid Seminar in 2002. Rufus already had some great tunes in his repertoire. Being around Brookmeyer, McNeely and Billy Hart was pretty inspiring. It's fascinating to consider that Rufus started playing bass as an adult. Also, that he became serious about composing after a long and successful career as a player and educator. Everything that Rufus does is thoughtful, deeply personal and highly artistic. Thanks for this video.
Thanks for watching William! Rufus spoke in depth about his experience at that very seminar on one of his Composer Spotlights, available in our website archives -- www.jazzcomposerspresent.com/archives One of our upcoming events is a Roundtable on May 26th celebrating Jim McNeely's 75th Birthday - details also on the website!

Well, I think this is likely the ONLY comment you've ever received from anyone else named "Jim McNeely!" My dad "John (Jack Basil McNeely) did compose jazz tunes, a couple songs written with my Dad and his writing partners, it was recorded by Duke Ellington. In closing, I also have played keyboards since about age 12, but ventured into demonstrating innovative electronic keyboard technologies to major artists rather than performing, started with MOOG Synthesizers, then a Laser Optic Keyboard called the Orchestron, then later acquired the original Mellotron Keyboard Company,. Anyway, I just wanted to say "Hello, and say how motivating your video here provides, keep making your great jazz albums, plus informative tips and topics.
