Grow Instagram followers using a Popup and Meta Ads
This tutorial shows how to create a custom popup that features a call-to-action to follow your Instagram page.
When you connect it to your Meta Ads, you can then use the UTM parameters of your Meta Ads' destination URL to only show the popup when people have clicked on your Instagram ad. This way, it will only show to people who are active on the Instagram app, making it more likely for these people to follow your business on Instagram.
This tutorial is using Popupsmart.com for creating the popup. Note that this tutorial is in no way sponsored or affiliated with popupsmart.com. I just like using it because it makes the popup creation part dummy proof.

🛠️ Here's how it works:
1. Always add UTM parameters to your Meta Ads (this is a best practice anyway) - Example:
2. Use a tool like Google Tag Manager to create a variable that extracts a query from the URL. In my example, I'm extracting the '' query from the ad's destination URL.
3. Now create a tag that shows dynamic content and/or a popup, based on the variable value you created in step 2. For this example, my trigger attached to the popup tag would filter by ' equals Instagram'.

🧲 Now whenever someone enters your website after clicking any of your ads from the Instagram app, they will see a popup to follow your account on Instagram.
You can use the same technique for other (ad) channels or for publishing custom incentives/content and calls-to-action based on the source of your (paid) website traffic.

    How do you change the photos used in the site links? They just appeared automatically once published, but I can't see them anywhere in ads manager during setup.

      They use the first photo on the landing page.

    Hi Bram, I have followed exactly to your instructions but the still didnt pass through even with the script I got from the Drive. Any reason or things I should check? In GTM preview, I can see "Original source" Custom JavaScript and it did record my , but not for the variable. It is still undefined

    Thanks for the video! Do you know how you can add images to the labels? Under Advantage+ creative you add the label and URL, but I can't figure out how to add an image (on slide 2 + 3 under "add site links"..) Do you know how to do this? Thank you for your help!

    hey thanks for the video! does this only work with the browser integration of the pixel? I tried with the server only and the data doesn't seem to appear.

      You would have to create a Custom Event instead. Use a tool like Google Tag Manager and create a tag with a trigger that captures the referrer.

    Month of june we have facing the issu in fb ads . From date of 6 June order conversation is very slow any changes in month of june.

    Hi Bram! Thanks for the wonderful tutorial. Since ads with site links can only be delivered to Facebook Feed, does it mean that I can only a campaign with facebook feed as the only placement? Or using advantage placement is still possible, just that the site link will only be shown on FB Feed. Thanks!

      Hi! You can still select all the other placements too. It just means that sitelinks may only show when your ad gets delivered in the Facebook Feed.

    Thanks Bram, appreciate the time you took to make this video....just to get your opinion....we want to test this type of ad also with Engagement objective ( want as much people to engage with the ad and click to the website...and use the site links....will it be best then to choose the conversion event as "View Content" ? or would you choose a different perfomance goal ? ( maximise reach, maximise impressions etc )?

      I would advice optimizing for 'Engaged visits' instead of 'View Content'. Here's my tutorial on the same: www.socialmediaexaminer.com/how-to-optimize-facebook-ads-for-quality-website-traffic/ You could adapt this technique and optimize for this event in a new Engagement objective campaign.

    Probably not available in UK, I had done these a week ago and site link option is also enabled in the enchanced section, but still they don't show in ad preview on dashboard nor on the facebook if you review it there

      You can’t see it in the real previews (yet), still they are added to the real ad. I can confirm this when looking at traffic coming from site links in GA4.

      It seems to be a slower transition from the current options to this new default. The default is what I'm showing in this video, there are no other (older) settings to switch back to.

    Thanks for the video, do you think there is anything similar that can help me track sales? So I am running ads for this e commerce website, they made 2 sales as soon as I started the ads. But it shows that sale came from google organic, which seems odd because my client doesn't rank on the first page of google for those keywords.

    Thanks for the great tip! In the 'Customise Columns' screen I only see 'Standard events'. Do you know why the Custom Conversions are not visible? Does this take some time?

      Yes, it may take some time before the custom conversion appears in the column metrics.

      @@bramvanderhallen Another question. I only measure around 8 TOTAL custom conversions per day, but I have far more daily traffic from Google. Is this because Meta only can match the 8 conversions with Meta users?

      @@kaybleekman28 Unlike 'custom events', 'custom conversions' are deduplicated by default. If the difference is really high, you could consider setting up this metric as a 'custom event' instead using tools like Google Tag Manager and/or sending data using the Conversions API to capture more signals.

    Very nice! Unfortunately it doesn't work for me. It doesn't show up during testing, nor do I see any data in the Colums.

      There's a current bug in 'Test Events'. Try refreshing the browser for the custom conversion to appear in Test Events. And regarding the data in the columns, you should provide some time. Check back tomorrow, depending on the amount of traffic you're getting from Google, you should start seeing numbers flow quite fast.

    The Google Traffic custom conversion doesn't show up when I am in the test events section. But the custom conversion event is tracking numbers, did I do anythin wrong?

      It's a known bug in Test Events. When you hit refresh it shows. If it started tracking numbers, you're good!

      Yes both, however you could add an additional filter to filter out paid clicks only and get 2 metrics in ads manager: organic search and paid search clicks.
