Sunday Worship 113/24 The Greatest Commandment
November 3, 2024 On-Line service of worship for the Longmeadow Congregational Church, UCC.
My name is Pastor Ruth of the Longmeadow Church and I post a special message for the children of our church every Wednesday as well as a message every Sunday for Family Worship.
As Jesus continues to instruct his disciples he continues to be approached and questioned, this time by a Scribe. The surprising thing is that unlike so many stories of Jesus encountering religious leader, in this man he found someone who was not far from the kingdom of God. The scripture text I will read today is Mark 12:28-34.

Children's Message 7/17/24 Lord's Prayer 5
I hope that you had a pleasant vacation last week. I was amused by your example of Marilla's stocism. I was named Anne for Anne Of Green Gables. When my mother saw my bright red hair, that sealed the deal. My mother was very stern, the terror at high school and Latin teacher but, when the chips were down, really loved her students. She would not let those around her dispair. And, I always smile when I think of Marilla because she makes me think of Mum. And, I love them both. Yes, I do love fictional charactors. Good to have you back. Blessings.
thank you Anne ... with an "E" 😇 I did want to let you know that we received the box of hats you sent and they will be delivered next week. Thank you!
I am so sorry that I am so far away. As you know, I ws both an organist and choir director for nearly fifty years and loved it. If I were there, I could,at least, help out until you found someone younger and frisky to take the reins. I will pray.
Thanks Anne!
It is so wonderful to have the new members. They will love Longmeadow and be loved and valued in return.Promises are so precious, and may God help us to keep our promises and treasure the kept promises of others. I am enjoying the time with the children on Wednesdays. You always have a new perspective on familiar concepts and ideas that make me think and wonder. May your week be blessed with joy.
I hope that you will always feel lifted by the circle of beleiveres who constantly see who you are and what you do to lift the body of Christ in your ministery. Have a blessed week and have an apple.
thank you anne ... and I have definitely been enjoying my apples this week
Beautiful message!
You are correct. When we work together with a loving positive attitude, everyone wins and we all have a great time. I am so glad to see you feeling better. As soon as I saw you last week, I just wanted to reach through the screen and hug you and encourage you to go get comfy in bed . It is so difficult to work when sick. I am so thankful to see your eyes twinkle and jolly voice quality again. Be well and God bless.
thank you Anne. I am feeling stronger every day
Oh no ! You sound and look like the fierce fall allergies have arrived ! I hope that you are feeling better by the time I actually watch this video. Look at all Longmeadow has accomplished by doing the best you can and working together. That is the litmus test. Being the best so often leads to nothing but a mean spirit, downright hate, and separation of people. I vote for love every time. And, I know that Jesus does, also.
I am feeling much better today (Sunday), thank you. I was just a bad cold.
Glad to know that you are feeling better. Colds are underrated for the misery that they bring. Bpx 1 of hats and cat toys will be coming along soon.Blessings, anne@@rev.ruthe.gallot9103
I am relieved that you added that our experience with Jesus can and does change frequently. All of our life with Jesus constantly changes and grows and culminates into our loving relationship of love. He is my Savior, teacher, advisor, companion, provider, healer and the list is endless. My needs differ and it shuffles up which of His gifts dominate at that moment but all of the rest of it is real and present. He is my everything.
Jesus is God. It's knowing that, makes it interesting when things go off your plan and you wonder why things are they way they are.
Thank you for making this service available. I do appreciate the time and work involved. The human need is so great. And, it is everywhere. It helps that there are those who speak out and say , let me help ! God bless all who love and help one another.
Those are strong words and we all need to hear them. I am so glad that you are not timid about speaking the truth evan when it is hard to hear. Thank you for also reminding us that when we are really cooperating with God's plan, we get to live in that love and enjoy being God's precious children. I am thinking about your Community Breakfast and the additional demands of preparing the fellowship hall for breakfast and then again for worship on Sunday. I am praying for lots of energy and a good spirit for all of you as you accomplish this. blessings to all.
thank you Anne. We all rallied together after worship today to swap the tables and chairs back to the dining configuration. It will be a bigger job after the breakfast to move it back, but we will make it happen. Just a reminder that next week's video will be up later in the day so that I can record our special speaker. Wishing you a blessed week
Is there a plan in place to meet the cost of the ceiling repairs ? Was there roof damage. I have been waiting to hear a bottom line figure as I want to help a little. You may not fully know yourselves yet. I sure think about you folks a lot and pray that you can get some progress soon and not experience yet more damage. You are a plucky bunch, I just love your spirit..@@rev.ruthe.gallot9103
You are correct. When we think about our life with "God sightings", a new one springs up right after the last. It is a constant reminder that He is truly with us in a very active sense and it is so dear. I am very interested in the progress on the church building and look forward to hearing a report soon.
the exterior painting is finished and the new vestibule is also finished. We are still on the waiting list with the steeple jacks and awaiting the engineer's recommendations on the ceiling. It is a good lesson in patience and adapting.
I, also love the enduring presence and power that always knows what I need and never leaves me. When I was a young new widow with two young daughters, I remember telling my mum that I often did not feel that I was enough to meet my children's need, finish my MA degree, and work. She agreed that that was a heavy load and went straight to her Bible. " His allowance was a continual allowance. . . a daily rate." Mum had lived in the strength of that promise most of her life and it gave her security and JOY.I have always loved good bread . It gives me what I need to live and work each day. It is such a staple of energy for live each day. And, God's enduring promise of His presence fills me with joy each day. He doesn't want us to go around afraid and joyless but wants us to really know He is right here ready to help us live that abundant happy life. Thank you for talking about this today and I pray that you will have just a somewhat busy week . Oh, mum's quote was from II kings, chap. 25, vs 30
It is so wonderful to see signs of God's power and love everywhere. Unfortunately, we see signs of violence and hate also. I thank God for all His blessings and pray they more can see God and move away from hate and hateful acts. Good to hear about progress on the church building. I pray for a good week for you with a little rest.
Lately, I have been some balance problems and prayed for help and concentration to build skill and avoid falls. I have constantly felt God's love and presence with me in a, difficult to describe, warm spot on my left shoulder reminding me to think about how I move and that He loves me and wants to help. I am so thankful.
What a lovely time together. Your story about the little girl is a beautiful example of the human component of God's plan to live out His wishes. And your part was spot on. You gave that little girl and her grandma the best gift ever, yourself. Sometimes, that is what we need the most. It helps us through the immediate need and warms our hearts for times to come. We all need to pay attention to life around us and look for opportunities to serve and show the world who God is. Bless you and I hope that you are not suffering too badly . Boy, we sure have to get creative finding ways to tolerate the heat.
It has been my experience that when a few believers get together in a restful activity, wonderful ideas and subsequent plans evolve. We all need rest and jolly time to have this happy. Ask my friends and they will tell you that I can be a real SLUG ! Hope it cools down soon for you folks.
I am very pleased that you chose the more positive passage, especially after the event in Pennsylvania last evening. I think that it is hard to imagine many gifts that give more joy than feeling forgiven. It does make one want to dance and sing and be joyful. I will just do the joyful and singing part until it gets a little cooler. You look pretty comfortable and cheery for someone in the heat wave.Thank God for the respite of the early mornings. Blessings for a very good week.
T tohank you for the timely reminder. I do think that God will not mind if I pack a change or two of clothes and a good book. But, He will not want me to forget to take His love, message, and hope for all. Please, keep us all informed about the needs of the sanctuary so we can pray and hope.
What a week for Longmeadow losing two beloved members. learning of necessary repairs, and figuring out how to use the fellowship hall to meet all the spacial needs of worship and other activities.. Oh, and coming up with a bunch of money to pay for the repairs. I do know that God is with you and, together, the work will be done for His Glory. I am interested in all of this as you bravely move forward with this task. Last week, I bent your ear off about my fears for the future of the world and for younger people I know and love. World leaders and our own are at serious odds with one another and we all wonder, yes with concern and fear what will happen. I pray about it and ask the Lord what I can do. I feel that He wants me to pray constantly and love and help everyone I know whenever I can. Your wonderful words of encouragement so well shared in God's Word have been such a blessing to me for several years but, particularly, this week. You are always in my prayers. I received the craft packet and will be ready every Wednesday to work on it together.
I must confess that I fear those things that have been a living breathing reality for many and lean heavily on the Lord to help where His will permits. These including life and death consequences where we must simply say yes Lord and go on the best way we can. For the small stuff, it is much easier to trust and roll. I am rather elderly and have still not mastered the fear thing. And, there is plenty out there to fear. I'll bet you did not know that I am such a weakling. Try to be as cool as possible and enjoy the beauty of summer.
Perhaps this is a good time for you to let God deal with the seeds you have planted and have a restful and pleasant vacation. I was hoping that you were going to travel because I know that you love to travel. Another time---- I sure am glad that you felt let to start the you tube ministry for you have blessed my life constantly with worship and a spiritual connection. Thank you. Now, go and have some free time and fun with your friends.
Imagine--in this world that seems to tirelessly hate and bring all sorts of harm to one another---there are still those who know the Lord and seek to bring His love and hospitality to all who will come. Longmeadow does it well and I thank you for it.
Lovely sermon today.
Thank you and the church so much for your prayers and well wishes for my Husband, Victor as he underwent surgery. It was successful and he is healing now but we were comforted in knowing that you and the congregation were praying for us. Praise be to God🙏
I have power again and am able to use my wifi. The John chap 3 passage can feel like a death sentence or a wonderful assurance of things to come, and I have seen and heard it used both ways. It feels to me like we each make our own choice and receive the consequent result. But, it saddens me to occasionally witness God's beautiful promise as a club. I have both external and internal "stuff" to pitch. Old books that are distant friends and guilt over things I have failed to accomplish. Every once in a while, you give me a little peak on what New Hampshire looks like. Blessings
Glad to hear that you have power ... how long were you without it?
@@rev.ruthe.gallot9103 We were without power for almost three days. . .still do not know why. It was inconvenient but not serious--think most freezer contents fine. Thank you for caring.
I really enjoyed this sermon Pastor Ruth. My Husband, Victor recently had surgery and I would love for you to include him in your prayers.
we all prayed for Victor this morning
WOW, you are sure getting the views ! It is so pleasant to see you folks out enjoying the day and planting some flowers that we hope to see next Spring. I actually can identify some of you by name. Great fun, thanks for sharing.
Pentecost Sunday has been wonderful for me. To be reassured that God's grace and leadership is always available to me is so precious. It calls to me each morning, sustains through out the daily and invited peaceful slumber when the day is done. My prayer life needed no prompting as last Sunday I was presented with several situation of joy and concern from my friends and family. I could feel the Spirit giving the right words to celebrate or comfort those around me. It was also wonderful to know that you were praying for me. Though I probably do not know you well , I do know your heart and that I love and receive you with thanks and joy. And, I have no intention of ending your prayer challenge. Many blessing for the week.
There is such a special reality and presence in prayer when two or more pray together for each other and with each other. And, I love the tenderness of sharing this together. I know that I need to feel the courage to do this more often. I can hardly believe that I do not do this constantly but I eel you and the Spirit urging me on. Meanwhile, I will try to come up with something red to wear to church next week for Pentecost Sunday. And, a special prayer for you as I know that next Sunday is your favorite Christian holiday of the year.
you will be in my prayers this week Anne
What inspiring ideas regarding God's love and how we can get the opportunity to love each other more and more. My new ladies circle conducted a fund raising event yesturday. We made a moderate profit for our labors. Some of us were struck by the warm sy loveing atmosphere we felt during the event. Some of us had been praying that this would happen. When a very well meaning member of the church bemoaned the moderate amount of profit we made, it was suggested that we discontinue these events and all just give more money. We were dashed at the comment. The fellowship we share in the work and serving all of our guests and
vendors is such an important part of the event. We love deepening our friendships and we pray that our guests can feel God's love working in us. We hope that we are on the right track and will continue. I also know that the commentator just wanted us not to have to work so hard. Your content was fresh and interesting as it follow last week's lectionery and prepares or Pentecost. Many blessings throughout your busy week.
Thank you for using the word, abide. I recently have heard the words stayed and remained. Abide is so much more energetic and active. I want and need to believe and live the idea of the pruning to mean that the Lord will trim away the negatives in my live that lead me away from Him and my Christian brothers and sisters.. I believe God never wants to destroy me but wants to help me love and serve better. That means that, at times, something has got to go and He lovingly trims it from my life. What a Savior. I pray that you will have a fruitful life this week mixed with some old fashioned fun.
I have always loved and been drawn to the word Abide - it has so much power and depth, it is more than staying in the same place, it has to do with making a relationship "home," the place where we live and are nurtured. It speaks of relationship and mutuality. It comes up again in next Sunday's scripture text and I look forward to that and how I am able to work with it again (without saying the same thing) .
Jesus knows our every need and lovingly exerts His power to meet the fruition of the need, in His time and with His love.
We hat a beautiful message.
Jesus lives with grace…
. . .and thank you for this lovely time together. I have often wondered if your community breakfasts provide an opportunity for its guests to experience God's love and care. I'll bet they do, The menu sounds mouthwatering good and the love and fellowship that fills our hearts. I am often with you in spirit during these Saturday mornings. God bless you for all of your work in providing this experience for the community.
Yes, this is "kick Thomas " Sunday. Poor fellow just wanted to be sure and responsible of his information and not shoot his mouth off without verification. Besides, he was a little late and missed the scene experienced by the others with no comment or judgement. But, it does give us the basis to talk about dealing with our woulds with His grace and love. I still feel such joy and newness from Easter that this may be the only time that I give Thomas much press.
Thank you so much for all the kinds of spiritual leadership that you provided all during Lent and culminating with Easter Sunday. You put so much into it and we receive so much from your teaching and leadership. I hope that you can claim some time to get some rest. About the "God on two legs" thing, I prefer the know, love, and serve the Lord thing, complete with individuality and a few human frailties. That is my kind of pastor and you are just fine. Many blesssings and much rest.
Thank you again for leading us on this spiritual journey.
Thank you so much for this meaningful service.
I like your idea. I have the stones and am trying to find some markers that will not wash off. Jury is out on where to place the. but I will. I pray for a lot of strength and energy for you this week.

I am so thankful for all those who, throughout my life, have reached out and showed me their faith and walk with the Lord. And, you are in that number of those I cherish. When I was agrieved at the loss of my church, I found you and have grown and grown ever since. I have also been blessed by other churches and invited to serve. I feel so happy and thankful. Many, many, thanks.
I heard three sermons on this text today. Thank you for the positive proclamation of God.s fervent and longstanding love that is available to every single person for all time. May God bless your week .
You pose a great challenge that even an elderly woman like me can make an effort to share Christ with someone. I am praying that the Lord will, somehow connect me with someone who needs to hear that they are truly loved by God and that can meet something in their life. Please know that I am thinking of and praying for you each day. I can feel how busy you are and that you are frequently called upon to meet many many needs. God bless you.
I cannot think of a time when your text and reflection were as timely and potent to my heart. There is a lot to unpack and I am going to take some time to listen and pray about it. It was also warm and loving and I appreciate that. Thank you for making me feel a part of your congregation, it is such a joy and comfort to me. God bless your week.
I am trying to give up some fears that have been working me over for awhile. And, if I can make progress with this, I will have nothing to crow about because all accomplishments, progress, peace, and joys come from Him. He just keeps giving, and giving, and loving and loving. Lent is such a great time to give it all to God and see what He would like to do with me.
Thank you for your faithful ministry of God's love and desire to bless our lives. I pray that He will bless you with love and joy as you help others claim and grow in that love.
I am thinking of and praying for a wonderful outcome for the annual meeting which may be over by now but effect will bless the church throughout the year. Your reflection today inspires me to think over how I will be the church this year. I am looking more more and new ways to do this and help my brothers and sisters in Him do likewise. We all need to feed and be fed with His love. Many blessings for your week.
In a world that seems bent on thinking and projecting gloom and doom for all, it is inspiring it is inspiring to hear you proceed with such trust, faith, and optimism about the years to come. It is so precious to know that, it spite of the world's fear, anger, hate, and dismal outlook, that God will always ultimately prevail. Some days, it is so difficult to hold the cross before all of the negatives and we need to hear Scripture and folks like you reminding us of that beautiful truth. God bless you in your ministry.
