"This course is rougher than a pirate's beard out there...." "I thought Alan Jones was wrong until about 5 laps ago when all the cars went off like popcorn." From what little I've heard of Ken Squier, I enjoy his turn of phrase. Pity he's no longer with us but that was an enjoyable commentary team - Scheckter isn't quite as grumpy as he can be.
1/51 for Alain Prost
Mosley (RIP) was one of the best drivers at bringing the most out of anything he raced. Those fuel injected stock block Chevy engines I believe were also used in the Formula 5000 series back in the day. They were beasts.
Omg i had no idea that datsun could be a pace car
Back when french mob didn't ruin Quebec i remember those races
Alan "IDIOT" Jones
Racing can't get better than this.
the last year they would race the full back straight, after that the chicane was used
There's gotta be a way to bring back this series or something close to it - without the crazy complexity of F1or WEC regs. Lightweight cars with 700 hp, with multiple manufacturers and freewheeling engine configurations. Oh well, I can dream. Great video, thx for the memories. And of Dan Gurney - I was lucky enough to see him win at St. Jovite in 1970 in the McLaren.
I was at this race.... Riverside Raceway is gone but Sunnymead Burgers is still there!
Go SA 😂😂😂 THANKS DANNY CHAIVIER ( DICK CRONK)
I didn't know about this series but it's exciting stuff. And it contains the great Jackie Ickx and well known names like Elliott Forbes Robinson, Geoff Lees and Keke Rosberg. Thank you for posting this.
Muchas gracias por este video de la CAN-AM ....THANKS
I was there flagging, but I don't remember what turn I was at.
I guess they quit racing Can Ams, what a disappointment.
I loved the original Can Am, especially the Chaparrals but lost interest before this new series started (I think I found girls!) but these cars are AWESOME! Can’t believe I’m just now discovering them!
Keke and Rahal were teammates in 1978 in New Zealand racing Formula Pacific for Fred Opert. Rosberg just destroyed him …he was fast and crazy when racing and when on the piss
Those cars look futuristic!
These were pretty much Formula 5000's with full bodywork added. But still great racing
Do you happen to have the full versions of what you post?
No, I dont, because this all that NBC would show of the race back then, only highlights in between other sports.
@motorsportshistorychannel .....Thanks for the answer brother. I appreciate that.
Its really a shame dont exist a similar type of racing cars no more.
They have historic racing at Laguna every year during car week. They’re definitely not flat out, but it’s cool nonetheless
Its better than nothing, but i dont live in USA. Its broadcast on youtube? Although the fact its not flat out and not the best drives take off a lot of fun.
They can't race like that anymore.
John Ward, what a brilliant mind. He did the Eagle 8100 Indy car with BLAT technology. Some pretty heady days there at Riverside with the Porsche 935s. Brings back such fond memories.
At 6 ft tall was standing next to Jeff Brabham 1990 IMSA greater San Diego del Mar Grand Prix race,, Jeff Brabham is much taller than 6 feet, a tall guy to fit in those little race car seats...
Ps, Rosbergs spin and recovery was amazing 👏👏👏
The cars are nuts. They just look so cool plus the balls on these guys is unreal to even drive them!! They look like fun cars to drive but super dangerous 😂❤ Brilliant to watch thanks for sharing 🍻👏
Maybe that Lee Dykstra car fielded by Carl Hogan wasn’t as bad as they said it was.
Sweet 👍
Was this on TV? I was at Riverside the week prior 7-years old. Keke was always my favorite as a kid.
Would anybody happen to know the name of the instrumental track at the start of the broadcast? I remember hearing it a lot as a kid in the 70s but I don't know the song's name or the artist. Thanks!
Power Generator by the Network Music Ensemble. 🤘🏼
@@DarmstadterHubsch YES! Thank you so much! I’ve been looking for this song for many many years. 👏👏👏
When the course was great, they could not leave it alone.
They had to add length to qualify for international races.
Wonderful, thank you !
Love Can Am.
What a race
Its so funny to hear about Bruce Jenner doing auto racing!
The old configuration of Laguna Seca, there was nothing like it, flat out from turn 1 all the way to the entrance to turn 5. When something went wrong in turns 2 or 3, it went VERY WRONG! I was there for that (and many other) weekend(s).
The announcer was so into it
This era of Can-Am proved to be instrumental in the boom of CART during the next decade. So many of the drivers, car owners, engineers and mechanics moved up out of SCCA Can-Am into Championship Auto Race Teams from 1982 to 1986.
This "era" of Can -Am was nothing like the original. SCCA, in their infinite wisdom, decided putting bodywork on F5000 cars would rekindle the Can -Am. They were wrong, should have left F5000 alone and supported it.
This is a sad shadow of the real Can Am cars. F5000 failure should not have been rebranded to disgrace the legacy of the Can Am brand. Any of the real Can Am cars would blow them off the track.
Thank you for posting ,,,,,it brought back great memories,,,” the older I get,,,, the faster I was”,,,
James Hunt's interview with Brock Yates is hilarious!
A more exciting and competative era than the "Bruce and Denny Show" or the Turbo=Panzer Porsche Era. Shame that my hero Brian Redman was badly injured and removed from the series at the start. All the future Cart stars started here as did F1! world champions! Bless you for posting this.
Bobby "Big Ball" Rahal. What a legend.
This series hhad about 15 future indycar drivers in it
I’m Australian and there were two of my fellow countrymen - Geoff Brabham and Vern Schuppan - in this race. But apart from that, I have always had a lot of respect for Bobby Rahal. I’m a little surprised that, good as he was, he didn’t go even further.
Well he won the indy 500 doesn't get any bigger than that
@@user-gz3cc8vh7g Not in America, anyway. But he did win the Indy Car championship three times.
@@thethirdman225 not in America what?
@@user-gz3cc8vh7g My point was that there’s no bigger race in America but I went on to point out that he also won three Indy Car Championships.
@@user-gz3cc8vh7g I believe he meant in Europe. Group C or F1
Great racing. Terrible commentary.
That was what we got back then
THANK YOU for sharing all these GREAT IMSA Full Races from the best era ever of motor racing! I'm surprised the Quality of the ones online aren't better, but yours are pretty good. Thank you for taping these and thank you for taking the time to share them with us!!! Keep 'em coming please!
The picture is My Lola T333 the Same Ampex Lola Bobby Rahal is driving for the win.I owned and drove it for 3yr.
I was there, my gf was installing in-car cameras (BFG sponsored), Those were cutting edge days for tech, went on to work with Dave in ATL... Motoworld.
Keke was the Man. Always flat out and sideways. Very enjoyable driving to watch and ridiculously fast at the same time!
Was this before Rosburg was at Williams F1?
@@epistte Yes. He only joined Williams in 1982, although he had brief stints with Theodore, ATS, Wolf and Fittipaldi before this. He had already been in F1 at the time of this race.
