Thank you for this video. It certainly shows how dynamic the situation is with these nests. I had one on my acreage a long time ago. it was in a shed out back so easy to avoid. I just gave them the Canadian treatment which is to wait until winter and when it was -20 C went out and knocked it down. They don't have much fight in the winter. I would never try to deal with one in summer.

Living in Arizona I have run afoul of yellow jackets and Maricopa Harvester ants a few times. Yellow jackets are no fun, but a single Harvester sting in my leg left me lame for hours. Best for mortal humans like us to avoid such things altogether. We also have Pepsis (Tarantula Hawk) wasps, which I have no desire to experience.

It is SO large! There must be SOME REASON the home owners didn’t call for help before it became that large? My immediate neighbor in a townhome community had a small nest by her security camera at our shared entry area which she sprayed and knocked down long before it might have become that large. She did a GREAT job too! 😊

I ran into a large wasp nest once when I used to deliver propane. I opened the cylinder cage to fill forklift cylinders and 50 or so wasps came right at my head. I got stung in my neck several places, but was able to obliterate their nest by quickly blasting it with liquid propane. It simultaneously froze and shredded the nest due to the immense pressure the pump produces.

My 2 story house in Colorado had a 1" gap in an bumped out upper floor bathroom under the eave, ostensibly for a vent about 12' wide. One summer afternoon in the back yard, I noticed yellow jackets coming and going through it, and went up in the bathroom- I could hear a 1000 of them moving around above the ceiling. The gap was long and 14' off the ground. I solved it by using foam pipe insulation in until the remaining opening was 1", then shot 2 cans of wasp fog into it, and sealed it. No more!

I'm confused. I thought yellow jackets were wasps, not hornets. I also thought that our native yellow jackets made nests in the ground while the non-native German yellow jackets made nests inside buildings or other structures, but never above ground or exposed like the nest shown in this video. I think the expert said this was some kind of hornet? But then he used the term yellow jacket, so I am confused about the species. I think this is probably the yellow-legged or Asian hornet? Please clarify as this species would definitely be more dangerous than our native yellow jacket wasp.

I saved a 2 year old from a felled nest. He had wandered away a little and when he upset the nest all the other kids ran away. He was screaming fists clinched being stung over and over. He fell in pain as they buzzed stinging. I did my best to cover my face and went toward him. He was heavy baby and i only 4 and skinny, i couldnt pick him up. So i grabbed his arm and dragged but they stayed with us stinging him over and over. I dragged him to his home and as i went around the corner, baby screaming covered head to toe in stings, and the loud buzzing ceased as in total silence they all formed a V flight formation and disapeared around the corner. I got his mom and she and my mom from that point took over and rushed to the hospital and i heard the doctors say it was a miracle a baby survied that many stings. Years later i learned that if you are running away from a hornets nest, it is best to hide where you cant be seen from their nest rather than run out in the open where they can see you from their nest. Their instincts are to always be where the can see their nest. So, upon learning this life saving fact i realized that was why they got quiet when i dragged baby around that corner.. mind you, years after it happened. But what i will never understand is WHY didnt even one hornet sting me as close as i was? I was a 4 year old heroine😂 i chose ro go in and grab him as i saw all the other children run away knowing if i went to get his mommy the baby would likely be stung twice as many times or more. Then without hesitation i covered my face with my forearm and dragged the neighbor baby with the other arm, knowing somehow even as a 4 year old this baby wouldnt make it without me doing what i never thought twice about doing, putting his safety ahead of my own, only wanting to save him But i will never know why i was never stung, even once!

Right after I moved into my current home, I noticed hornet nest in a tree nearby. Being a good neighbor who didn't want anyone getting stung, I called the HOA and they sent out a pest control "expert". She had no idea how to handle this... she went over, mid day, with NO PROTECTIVE GER, and aprayed the hive. Needless to say she got stung all over.

Indeed very dangerous…nevertheless, I’ve spent the last few years studying this amazing insects. Along the way we learned to communicate to the point where I gave exhibitions demonstrating how to communicate. Even going so far as to place my face up to the open nest as they were coming and going. In fact just last week at the park …while eating pizza …I taught a family from Ohio how to negotiate and not be afraid as the Yellows flew in to check out the food. What’s my secret…? Yellows can perform facial mapping algorithms while entangling data with binaural & chemical signals. And…since they are a hive species , they can communicate Friend or Foe info to the hive mind. The secret to success is look into the eyes of the Yellow scout …while calming heart beats and controlling your chemical signals. Yellow are sensitive to adrenaline…so don’t excrete it.

Yellowjackets are a joke. European paper wasps are 4X bigger. Mud diggers are brutal. Worst time I ever had was an old dead cedar tree stump full of bumblebees. Your suit isn’t effective against golf balls hitting you in the face trust me. Yellow jacket ground nests are worse than the paper ones for some strange reason the venom burns worse in me personally. Biggest next I’ve ever seen was 6’ tall by 4’ wide and in depth. Up between double cross arms on a power pole 60’ high thank God. There was a 50kva can on the pole and the nest made it look small. Bigger nest ever was 20’X20’X20’ square up under a lady’s deck in Texas I believe. Estimated to have a billion bees in it. A meter reader heard a loud humming and couldn’t believe his eyes. Called 911… The Smithsonian took parts for a display.

There was a yellow jacket nest in the ceiling above my bed just a couple weeks ago. I knew they were there because I could hear them scratching and chewing in the ceiling mid day. My wife and I know an exterminator that drilled tiny holes in our ceiling and sprayed them for us. This winter I'll make my way up in the attic and check out the size. I've been minding my own business and had these boogers land on me and bite and sting without being anywhere near a nest. It happened to me just the other day while I was in the woods scouting a hunting area. But, I've also had nests in the yard that I've run over several times with the mower and they didn't seem to mind at all. They can be the meanest little devils you've ever seen, though.

Just recently we were having an outdoor meal near Lake Tahoe. There was one buzzing around us and the other patrons. I kept trying to land on my plate. I just sort of slowly moved my hands to get it to go away. My husband told me not to swat it or be aggressive. It worked. It just went somewhere else. Other people were standing up and freaking out. It didn’t actually sting anyone that I know of. It was actually quite docile, surprisingly. Good thing it was only one of them.
